This is a difficult review to write as most parts of our cruise on the Mary Anne were spectacular...but sadly, the actual ship - the Mary Anne - is in desperate need of repair and updating.

First - the crew, the food, our guide (Rafa!), the destinations, our fellow passengers - were OUTSTANDING and our family thoroughly enjoyed all of them! We were 7 of the 16 guests - and it was large expense to do this trip. We expected more from the ship.

During our week long adventure, this is what we experienced from the ship:
- on arrival, one of our 4 cabins had no a/c. They had to completely replace the a/c unit - this took a day -displacing them to another much smaller cabin.
- on arrival most of our cabins smelled quite musty, the carpets are stained - the solution for the musty smell was a vapor scent diffuser that got passed cabin to cabin. Unacceptable.
- At least 3 times there was a sewage smell in the hallway connecting our cabin doors (and the smell came in the cabins). There was some type of pump repair going on in the hall to fix this but it kept re-occurring.
- We were out on a Zodiac viewing wildlife and the motor died. We had to be towed back to the ship.
- The Mary Anne engine died/needed repair one day and we had to be towed by sister ship (traveling with us) to the next destination.
- While all this was going on - nearly every passenger experienced some kind of digestive virus. There is no way to determine the source of that but likely the ship's water system- but I want to add that the crew standout that assisted in the care of those ill, was Vanessa - truly an angel!

For the very expensive price we paid, we expected accommodations in much better working order. The Mary Anne is a beautiful ship and deserves to be invested in! Please!

We spent 7 nights on the Mary Anne in February 2020 (happily before the corona virus spread) and it was truly wonderful. The ship is beautiful, the crew was friendly and helpful, the guide was fantastic, the food was delicious and the islands and animals were amazing. The Mary Anne is a sailboat and although the motor had to be used much of the time, we did raise sails several times. The room were comfortable and many were singles (without an extra charge) -- there were 14 passengers during out stay and it was a nice size. Several excursions each day to different islands let us see many different species of animals and lots of different vegetation. This trip was a dream come true for me, and I highly recommend the Mary Anne.

This was a wonderful one-week trip with an amazing naturalist guide and crew. Food was plentiful and amazing. Walking trips and snorkeling were superb. Rooms small, but adequate. Nice shower, toilet in each room with toiletries provided. We had some medical issues with passengers on board, but these were handled well. The need to get someone to an airport required a change of itinerary, which was disappointing, but the cruise company made reasonable changes. Boat sales went up a couple of times, though the motor was the primary way the boat moved from place to place. Would definitely do a trip on the Mary Anne again!

The one week tour following the eastern route of the Galapagos Islands on the SS Mary Anne was truly remarkable and wonderful. The sail ship, originally built in Europe about 50 years ago for competitive sailing, was repurposed to serve as a cruise ship carrying passengers from island to island in the Galapagos. The maximum capacity of the ship is 16 passengers, and about a 10-person crew, plus a certified guide who is part of the National Park Service of the Galapagos. The crew was 100% Ecuadorian. The ship itself is beautifully designed, very well made, with excellent details.Even though by some standards it might be considered "old", the ship has been lovingly and well maintained and is kept spotlessly clean by the crew. The crew on our trip was marvelous; even though most of them had not work together on that particular ship, they all worked impressively well together, as a team. As a passenger, one could not have asked for more attentive, responsive, accommodating, all around good service. The meals, every one of them, were delicious, beautifully presented, well balanced, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables always included.
The visits to the islands were very well coordinated. The guide, who had close to 30 years' experience in the Galapagos, was outstanding, well informed, highly trained in his field as a naturalist, very knowledgeable about the fauna, especially, of the islands. His explanations were clear and he was always willing and able to respond to questions. He was passionate about preserving and respecting the wonders of the islands and their ecology; his wonder and delight at the natural world surrounding us was infectious.
There were short walks on one or more of the islands most days, as well as numerous opportunities for swimming, and snorkeling. The ocean waters and beaches were splendid and memorable. It's not every day that sea lions and lizards let you share their favorite sunning and bathing spots.

The three masted, 16 passenger barquentine ship S/S Mary Anne took us on a one week cruise of the Western itinerary. The pros: the guide, Roberto, was awesome. A local who was energetic, enthusiastic, professional and very knowledgeable (spoke english, German and Spanish). He MADE the trip and seemed to have unlimited energy for our mix of daily activities, with either kayaking, hiking and environmental tour on one of several islands, or snorkeling, TWICE a day. The tour was through Andando Tours, and Roberto was a catch and made the trip what it was. All of these activities were superb, and we lucked out with great weather. Wetsuits kept the cold out from the chilly water. Being aboard the ship for the week was a very efficient way to see multiple islands.

Cons: surprisingly, the S/S Mary Anne was not great. I was prepared for small ship cabin as you would expect on any sailing vessel so the unpleasant experience was not about misplaced expectations. The ownership had just changed hands and it was apparent the new owners had not grasped the details. Many of the cabins had wet carpets, very wet, throughout the cruise. Some cabins had been repainted, which was great, but the smell was so bad one passenger slept out on the deck under several blankets. The crew appeared understaffed and not infrequently passengers were looking for staff for the bar, or to get tea or something for their rooms. Poor Roberto bore the brunt of these frustrations, unfairly, but in stride.

I met some incredible people on the cruise and maintain contact with a few of them to this day. Fun adventurous people, as you might expect. And learning more of the history of the Galapagos, from volcanic activity, early settlers, to Darwin (and his short stay) and of course everything you would expect concerning evolution and the interesting species, from within the ocean, the islands and in the air and the habitats which form their homes. Fascinating. Incredible to see, up close, these different species in their natural habitats. I would do the trip again, in a heart beat, but only if I heard from reviews that the new owners of the Mary Anne had mastered the details. Andando Tours, by the way, had provided me with an outstanding guide to climb several volcanos the previous two weeks (look for that review), and that was a very very positive experience.

Hello Terry, Thank you for letting us know about your experience. First, we are pleased that you had a great trip with our guide. This boat has consistently worked with the best guides in the archipelago. The last owner always stood out at working with the best guides, and the new management is keeping the same naturalist guides. As you probably know, the ship S/S Mary Anne was bought by a new operator and is under new management. It is worth mentioning that the Mary Anne is itself an exceptional ship; however, the vessel wasn’t transferred in the right conditions. There were many unexpected failures such as old and wet carpeting, inefficient use of the space in cabins, among others. Unfortunately, this forced us to do immediate maintenance in the cabins, and therefore the paint smell in the cabins. The rugs were replaced with modern floors to avoid humidity, the bunk beds were removed to make more space in the cabins, and new wooden decoration was put in place. On the other hand, Mary Anne has 9 crew members for 16 passengers, which is the standard for a first-class Galapagos cruise. We are sorry if you felt unattended during your trip, which we have already considered, and, currently, our service efficiency has greatly improved. For mid-2020, we have planned a 10-week dry dock in Peru, where the ship will be completely renovated, including all the common areas and cabins. The sailing system will also be upgraded to be able to hoist the sails faster, enabling for more sail navigation during each cruise. We hope you can travel with us again in the future to experience our improvement and attention to detail firsthand. All the best,

I did the 8 day Eastern itinerary on the Mary Anne in November. There were a lot of small issues with the boat (mildew smell in cabins, ripped sails, poor communication, not catering to dietary restrictions, etc) but I chose to overlook them because I was in the Galapagos and the Galapagos are AMAZING. I was having the trip of my life, until the end. We were set to go to Española, the island that I and most of the others on my trip were most looking forward to. Do to engine failure, we did not get to go to Española, and instead went back and spent an extra day on Santa Cruz. We paid a lot of money for a trip specifically to see this far-flung island, but instead spent most of our time on Santa Cruz (which was not at all exciting or special compared to the other islands).

Mistakes happen but Mary Anne has been beyond disappointing in resolving the issue - a manager came on board to talk with us the next day but he offered us absolutely nothing. He asked us to work with our agents (mine was Galapagos Experience) in order to receive any financial compensation because Mary Anne would offer us nothing on this disastrous trip.

My agent from Galapagos Experience has been helpful, but she has not been able to get anything from Mary Anne, and she agrees that they have been extremely difficult to work with. I’m left with no recourse.

Please, please, please - DO go to the Galapagos. They’re unbelievable, and like nowhere else on earth. Absolutely do not sail with the Mary Anne, it was a nightmare and completely heartbreaking and they’ve washed their hands on doing anything at all to make it right.

Dear Raphaela, We are very sorry about your bad experience during your cruise on the Mary Anne. As explained, the ships´ main engine had a fortuitous damage, forcing the vessel to return to Puerto Ayora and could not complete its navigation to Española Island, since the safety of our passengers is our top priority. As explained in writing in the letter you received during the cruise, the company offered alternative activities for that day. These activities where in Santa Cruz Island, as it was not possible to navigate to other islands. We understand that this activities are not comparable to the visit to Española Island, and therefore, the company offered to reimburse you for the lost visit to Española, by returning the equivalent of 1 day of the cruise value. This reimbursement has to be channeled through Galapagos Experience, the agency where you booked the cruise with, as this is the regular procedure. Upon our offering, you demanded a reimbursement of 25% of the value of the cruise, even though just 1 day of the 8-day cruise had to change, given the fortuitous damage to the engine, and even though the company offered alternative visits for that day, which you took part in. As explained, we don´t believe is fair to demand a 25% reimbursement given that just 1 day of the 8-day cruise was affected by the damage. We continue to offer a reimbursement equivalent to 1 day of the cruise, which we have tried to transfer to the Agency Galapagos Experience and are waiting for their acceptance. We understand that this situation might have affected your experience in the Galapagos, but it’s simply not true to say that our company did not offered alternative visits for that day (in which you participated) and immediately offered a compensation directly proportional to the lost visit. Best regards,

The staff pay attention to every little detail, and the guides are deeply experienced. We visited magical, remote places in small groups and saw amazing wildlife... then back to the boat for good, fresh food. (I assume there are strict rules about fishing and farming in the Galápagos, but the fruit and the fish in particular were fresher than you would ever expect on a cruise). Everything had a personal touch. I felt sad for all the flocks of tourists we saw on bigger, noisier boats, and especially for the people who stayed on dry land and just took daytrips from Puerto Ayora.

One disadvantage is that smaller vessels can roll more, so be prepared for sea-sickness on some of the long crossings; and cabins can be cramped & noisy, but you won't want to spend much time in your cabin. Mary Rose also has some narrow, steep stairs (as you'd expect on an old boat) so it may not be ideal for travellers with mobility problems.

We can't say enough about the amazing 8-day cruise aboard the Mary Anne. Possibly the most stunning ship (3-masted brigantine) available for cruising the Galapagos Islands. The ship was well-equipped, on-board service was superb, great food, a friendly crew, not overly luxurious (which gave it more of real sailing ship feel!). The berth was cozy but comfortable, and the lounge and dining rooms were well sized and comfortable. We benefited from a passenger complement of 14 (the max is 16) and a crew of 10, so we were never wanting of rooms made, meals served, bar service, and crew support for the snorkeling, kayaking and landing excursions. The above deck space was ample for the passenger size, with plenty of seating fore and aft for lunches, dinners and general relaxing. We had some amazing sunsets. There was but one hiccup, we drank the bar dry of gin part way through the cruise. But the barman came to the rescue one evening and sneaked off to a neighbouring ship at anchor and purloined another bottle to keep the passengers in good spirits to the end of the week. Now that's what we call service!! We must also thank the guide - Cristian Villarroal. He was awesome; undoubtedly one of the best around for his warm relaxed personality, energy, wildlife knowledge and sense of humour. Just about the only criticism, would be we would have liked more time in the water and on land during the various excursions, but we did appreciate that the ship is on a fairly tight schedule and is restricted on time at each location. We seriously recommend if you want a cruise with a difference, a real feel of a sailing ship, and a level of intimacy that you check this one out. We considered it was worth every penny!!

I went on the 8 day cruise on the Mary Anne and it was an unforgettable vacation. I went there on my own and had a cabin for myself without paying the single supplement that the Galapagos cruises charge you. So that was a big plus for me and went on this cruise, the service was good and the crew was outstanding, they let you help with the sails sometimes and are really attentive. Everything was clean (which is really important for me), had an amazing time with the other passengers and got to snorkel and kayak, the animals are something unique and saw many of them. If you are prone to get seasick take some pills along with you and take comfortable sandals and shoes along with you! I really recommend Mary Anne and would definitely go back on board.
