I booked the day tour to colca canyon near Arequipa with SAS travel Peru. I booked online a month befor my trip and that was convenient. The company confirmed the day before as to where I was staying and they picked me up at 3 am. The bus was a coach type bus but the ride was long and there wasn’t enough bathroom breaks ( no washroom on the bus). It was unclear as to whether breakfast and lunch were included, but we did stop in a small town and had breakfast ( bread, jams, coffee/tea). There were a lot of stops along the way, but I appreciated the views. At the canyon there were a lot of people and we didn’t have much time ( about an hour) to watch the condors. Some of the smaller stops could have been skipped for more time at Colca. It was very breath taking. We than travelled back to a another town for lunch ( which we had to pay for and don’t get a say as to where we ate). After lunch we travelled onward to our free time ( hot springs, kayaking or zip lining) not outlined in the itinerary. But I knew about the hot springs so I had a bathing suit ready. After an hour, we travelled up the mountain to the view the volcanoes at a closer view, which was really cool to see. My advice is to wear a jacket as the morning in the bus and upper part of the mountain is cold. During the day it was rather warm. No need for hiking boots on this day. Overall it was ok. But there was a lack of information as to what to expect. I’d you have time, do this in two days.
P.S try the cactus plant ice cream!

We saw loads of condors which is what we had wanted so that was good. The "continental breakfast included" was a bit measly, just rolls and jam with tea. It was fine but call it what it is. Once we arrived in at the national park we had to pay the hefty 70 soles each for entry on top of the tour cost. Once in the park we must have stopped maybe 15-20 times at various towns and look out points. I understand they want to share out tourist income to the local communities, but after getting up at 3am, it became a bit labourious to leave one place only to be shepherded out of the bus again 5 mins later. The lunch was a buffet which was fine, but my stomach is now upset, and this is the only suspect place we ate. There also seemed to be some discrepancy between the passengers with some having paid 80 soles for the tour with lunch included, and others paying 75 without who then had to pay 20 soles for lunch.

An optional extra was going to the hot springs, but only one couple out of the 14 people wanted to do this. I wouldn't have minded waiting and walking around the town but the guide appeared to put some pressure on them to not go, so we didn't.

Overall, we got what we wanted which was to see the canyon and the condors, but I think some things could be improved.
