The trip over and back was a great ride on the boat. It was loaded with illegals which was very uncomfortable and they were not the most polite people be around. I would not go over there again because of that.

What a great experience! I wasn’t able to secure a 4WD vehicle so my only option was to run it. Biking isn’t an option either.
It’s just over 11 miles from the parking spot (where others were letting the air out of their jeep tires)
I grabbed water, sunblock and headed out.
It was a great way to see this beautiful spit of land (glacier created)
Running along the beach for a few hours, seeing the seals hauled out on the beach, and making my destination the Great Point Light was so great!
I did get dive bombed my dome seagulls as their babies were on the beach, but uneventful otherwise.
A great way to spend a morning on Nantucket!

This is an incredible experience when visiting Nantucket ! We secured a day pass on line , let the air out of our Jeep tires , 15 psi , and off we went . We had to stop at mile 3 and hoof it almost 2 miles out to the lighthouse in the sand , well worth it , we saw many different birds , Seals swimming within 5 feet of the beach and took a dip in the clean , warm ocean at the very tip . If we return , we would pack everything , chairs , lunch , etc. and pick a small section of beach to have to ourselves for the entire day . For Jeep renters , relax and know how to shift to 4L . Best thing to do in Nantucket !

You're in Nantucket, you have to see all the lighthouses, what else is there to say? Hard to get enough words for a review, but this island is small enough that you can visit each lighthouse. Why wouldn't you?

Excellent spot. ordinary sight but a phenomenal setting. Worth the effort and time that it took to get there. Go early if possible.

One of the most remote and beautiful places in the world. Well worth the fee. Don’t get stuck in the sand! We were a little worried about getting stuck in the sand based on the horror stories told to us by the trustees who helped us take the air out of our tires, but after driving we realize they were actually in the business of keeping people away, not promoting the full experience. Can’t blame them, they’re actually in a conflict. But I’m glad they keep the place open. Got stung by some jellies but that’s not actually their jurisdiction, we did step off the land and into the ocean. Must do.

You MUST do this! Rented Jeep from Affordable Rentals for the day. Put the top down and we were on our way! Explored the island for the day and in the morning took the ride out to Great Point. Go online to the Trustees and obtain your $50 pass for the day. No cash at the gate. Deflate your tires to under 15 PSI and then you are on your way navigating through the dunes! Such a blast! Our two teen daughters loved it and it was so beautiful. The weather was chilly in early June but we have friends that typically do this in mid July and will spend the day on the beautiful beach swimming near the seals. A beautiful, memorable experience. We collected shells and beautiful rocks (hope that was ok😬)and now have them in a glass hurricane with a candle in our house so every time I light the candle we think of our wonderful day at this beautiful spot we are so fortunate to have in our home state.

We loved the experience of driving out to the lighthouse, experiencing being in the middle of the Atlantic surrounded by water 350 degrees (about 10 degrees less than 360 because it is a thin peninsula) with this tall landmark as background and natural wetlands all around in use by migrant and local birds alike for sanctuary and nesting alike. Our new best friends were the seals.
We drove out with a rental jeep and enjoyed the day on the beach with pristine waters, nothing but open spaces and all the room we could possibly want. Don't miss this opportunity if you get a chance to go, but be prepared to bring your own food & water. There are port a porta potties available but no stores or merchants of any kind. Just nature.

We had been to Nantucket six times over the years but this was our first trip out to Great Point and it was as beautiful as it was peaceful. I highly recommend making the effort you won’t regret it !

Are tours offered in late October?? Will be going October 21-22 and I can’t drive a stick so I don’t want to rent a Jeep. Will walk if I have to but wanted to see if tours are available and how to book one?

Hello, due to the pandemic, all tours are postponed this season. The Jeep rentals are standard so I suggest you contact Affordable or Youngs, both on Nantucket for a Jeep.
Those are the only 2 rental agencies who have Jeeps permitted to go to the refuge.

Hello there, Do you have contact information for your friend to schedule a tour? My Fiance and I have been trying to figure out traveling for our wedding. I spoke to the Police Department and they advised that a permit is not required, as it is just the two of us with a priest/pastor (which I have not located yet). However, I just read that it's kind of difficult to get to the light house/beach area by foot or regular vehicle. Thank you for your post, it was helpful.

I am planning to take a hike the lighthouse! How many miles is it from the gatehouse, one way? And how strenuous, 1-10? And how long did it take? I am an avid hiker and a marathon runner, but I like to be well informed and prepared. Thank you.

The trip from the gatehouse to the light is nearly 6 miles. The route is almost all soft sand, so while not hilly, can be strenuous. Not being a hiker, I'd drive it, but if you stick to the beach and walk the shoreline where the sand is harder, you should be ok.
Do we need another permit beside the beach permit to drive to great point on a Sunday in August?

Hi, My family is planning on spending a day in Nantucket this July. I would love to see the whole island, as it sounds like you did. Is it best for us to bring our own vehicle over on the ferry? Thanks.

No to take your own car you take a traditional ferry which is almost three hours each way instead of a hour in the high speed ferry. Thus take a high speed ferry. You can rent at affordable rental a short walk from ferry. It is expensive but for a day worth while. Rent a four wheel drive so you can take a great drive on beach. You will need reservations.
Can you drive out to the point with people sitting in the bed of a truck?
