This is not a review just a notice that the sand bath will be closed March 31st until some time in spring in 2024. They are rebuilding the park area

Beppu sand bath is a "not to miss" experience when you visit Beppu. The volcano sand is heated with the onsen (hot spring) water. When buried with the sand, I was expecting huge amount of sweating and nothing happened like that, may be due to the winter climate around. It is just an unique experience in Beppu for us.
We need to book appointment by telephone as they were running full house and the place could be maintained better.

Unique onsen experience whereby the sands are heated with the hotspring water and they buried you in it. It feels heavy but not really hot though, I would have preferred it warmer but could be due to the weather, as it was less than 10 degrees. You are able to bring your handphone in for them to help you take photo of your experience. This place can only take 12 person at any one time, so might need to wait when it gets crowded. Each sand bath is limited to 15 mins which is one of my peeved points, as I was just getting comfortable after 15 mins. I tried another sand bath in Ibusuki whereby they have a bigger area for the sand bath and allowed you to stay as long as you like.
The beppu sand bath though has a nice sea view. The facility is a bit rundown.

Un bain de pied chaud face à la mer et puis...immersion dans le sable noir et...brûlant. étonnant de s allonger et de se faire ainsi recouvrir avec juste la tête qui dépasse... Le poids du sable...l immobilité et la chaleur pendant 15 minutes. Un conseil...ne prolongez pas trop le bain de pied au risque de rendre la peau des pieds et des talons trop sensibles à la chaleur du sable. A faire absolument

別府湾の素敵な景色を目前にゆっくり砂湯を楽しめます。
料金は \1,050-、浴衣は付いていますがタオルは有料となります。
荷物はコインローカー預けます。
砂湯もいいですが、手軽に無料の足湯を楽しめます。
運がよければ、別府国際観光港へ入港してくるさんふらわあに出会えます。
駐車場は狭いですが無料です。

別府大学駅から徒歩10分も掛からない距離でした。
館内の有料コインロッカーに服や荷物を入れるのですが、支払ったコインは戻ってこないのでロッカーを閉める際に忘れものが無い様、注意してください。
大きな荷物がある場合は有料大型ロッカーがあります。
浴衣は無料ですがタオルは有料です。
スマートフォンを持参していけば従業員の方が写真を撮ってくれます。
動画撮影は禁止とのこと。
湿った砂は意外に重いです。入浴後は体がぽかぽかでした。

混むと聞いていたのでオープンと同時に
入りました。
流れ作業的な感じはなく親切でよかったです！
ただお風呂は熱すぎてはいれなくシャワーだけになりました。。

8:30のオープンと同時に入りました。
入浴料金が1050円、受付で浴衣のみを貸してもらえます。タオルは有料です。オリジナルタオルは360円とお高めでしたが、お土産として持って帰ると思い買いました。
砂が重たく感じられましたが、汗をかくことができ、少し健康になったような気がしました。カメラをスタッフの方に預けると写真を撮って頂けました。
なかなか、楽しめました。

This was a unique experience. We did have to wait a little while but in nice surroundings so it wasn't too bad. Being burried in sand may sound weird but it is actually quite nice and the staff are all very friendly and respectful.

Definitely a bucket list experience but one that also leaves you feeling uniquely relaxed after the ‘treatment’. We heard of the long waits so we tried to get there early. We arrived at 9:45 am and managed to secure the 10:30 am slot for our party of three. Found the ¥1050 charge fairly reasonable. Several ‘surprises’:
- The whole ‘facility’ is smaller than the expected - the change room, waiting area and shower area are all super compact!
- There are two sand pits side by side which can alternately accommodate and handle only twelve people at a time - hence the long wait during the peak hours.
- The sand is heavier and hotter than expected so do not hesitate to inform the lady attendants to make ‘adjustments’.
- The sand burial only lasts 15 minutes but feels quite adequate given the intense heat build-up.
- The attendants will assist in taking pictures with your phone cameras during the burial (and they are quite good at it!)
- Underwear is not allowed to be worn under the yukata provided.

How strict are the rules about no tattoos? I want to enjoy but would not like to be turned away.

I visited this location June 23 of this year and I have tattoos on my arms which were clearly visible upon arrival and I was not turned away.
The robe covered everything when I was buried. And the hot bath (which only fits about 3 people) after the sand bath is optional.
I was in Japan for about 3 weeks and always wore short sleeve shirts and my tattoos were very visible. We visited many small restaurants and shops and not once was I ever turned away.

My 6 and 7 year old children were also with us when we went to the sand baths and the attendants accommodated to the adults first and leaf the children with only about five minutes. The kids loved the five minutes they spent buried in the sand but by minute four they were telling me they were getting to hot and wanted to scratch their noses.
