...from Osaka primarily to see this museum and other earthquake related sites and memorials. I would say it is a must-see museum if you're visiting the area. Put together quite well and spread over two buildings, there's a lot here to learn with quite a bit in English to do just that. It actually started off kind of slow. I arrived a little after they opened at 9:30. When you start off, they want you to watch a couple movies to give you a feel of what the earthquake was like and whatnot. I had to wait a little while for this group of elderly people to settle in for the movies to start so that was a bit frustrating. That's on me though. They were actually quite happy, smiling and having a good time. I got to learn to chill. Anyway, the first room we went around by ourselves was pretty serious one with a wide variety of photos and displays that show the extent of the disaster. Seems like the English slows up a bit after that but still enough to keep it interesting for you. I tried an interactive exhibit that gives you a feel for what it's like to move your legs in the water during a tsunami. The lady that ran the machine was very friendly. Other rooms included general information on all earthquakes and preparation for them. If there was one thing I would have liked them to have touched on, it would be how disadvantaged groups such as the disabled, foreigners, and even animals were affected during the earthquake. They are likely the most suffer and find it difficult to recover in such circumstances.

There was so much to learn from the past incidents where so much damage was done and how people had to go through not just the property loss, but mental sufferings and how the community recovers. It makes us feel small again in this world. The visit here gave so much information on the quake (videos, displays, info board etc) - I vividly remember reading that while it was good to receive a lot of help in the recovery, too much of it would make people over-reliant. It makes us realise and reflect on our lives.

Very well done place so I do highly recommend coming here.

I went here today, I didn't have much time. I got to the memorial museum at 4pm by taking the no 29 bus from Sannomiya Station, which stops directly outside the museum, there's a no 29 going back or you can take a 101 going back which run later. The open hours were 9.30 to 17.30 (18.00 July to Sept) and Fri, Sat to 19.00 all year. Last admission 1 hour before close. I really enjoyed my visit, although wish I had more time to read more of the narratives. I'd recommend 2.5 hours. I saw 3 films, they were all great, very interesting, very well produced. One in English and others with English audio. The staff were amazing from the reception staff, to the film attendants, the helpers/story tellers, and the security. They were super friendly and really professional. They knew I didn't have much time and they really helped me get through the museum and made sure I saw the main films. I would recommend a visit, especially as Japan is in such an earthquake region. Really enjoyed.

This was the best attraction we went to in Kobe. The experience begins with a video showing what happened when the earthquake first hit, then a walk through a recreated street damaged by the earthquake. There is then a short documentary showing how the aftermath was dealt with. Artefacts from the earthquake are shown, along with written accounts from survivors and emergency services personnel. On the next floor there is a display dedicated to being prepared for disasters. A great combination of education and history in the one place. Be aware that last admission is 1 hour prior to closing time, and you will need at least 1.5-2 hours to properly experience this place

This museum covers the tragic earthquake and Tsunami that beset Kobe in 1995.
There are a number of photos and exhibits that explain what happened on that fateful day.

Very moving. It is interesting to see what measures the country is taking to try to ensure these natural disasters when they strike have less of an impact on the cities populations.
