This is a MUST visit for anyone visiting Alexandria. This part of history must be told and listened to! While off the beaten path, it is a past that should be taken!

The Alexandria Black History Museum is part of the museum system of the city of Alexandria. This museum focues on educating and giving information about blacks and slaves in Alexandria. There are things that shows life and activities of slaves and how they coped with daily activities. Much to learn and understand the life of them in the past. The museum also features works and civil activities of prominent black men and women in the area. I strongly recommend the museum. It is located a few blocks from main Washington Street. A suggested donation of 3 USD to help the museum.

In every city that I visit I try to go to a Black History Museum. Until I did some research, I never knew Alexandria had one. It is in a very nondescript building; but, oh does it hold a richness and passion for the history of blacks in Alexandria! It is not very large and can be totally viewed in a morning or an afternoon. The volunteers were friendly, helpful, and extremely passionate about the museum. If you are looking for the history of black people in the area, this is the place for you!

Alexandria has had a glorious past, especially during the 18th and 19th centuries. This is also known as home of ‘George Washington’. Being a small town, it is easy to explore this place on foot. The ‘Alexandria History Museum’ is located off N Washington street. Though not very large, it does throw light on the glorious past of this city, and contribution of it’s citizens to the WW-I and WW-II efforts. Worth sparing some time.

I could not leave Alexandria without visiting this place. The paintings depicting the history of slavery and the life lived by slaves was rich. The difficulties faced by blacks just decades ago as they fought for equality in this country is a must see! And fortunately a doll house collection by two artists was being featured-beautiful work capturing old time Alexandria for African Americans. Fabulous, thoughtful historically valuable work. Highly recommend this center when you travel to the area. A suggested 2.00 donation is the only admission. Don’t miss it!!

This small location is packed with such detailed information about a time in our country which included slavery. Specifically, there is much information about the history of blacks in Alexandria, VA -- How blacks came to have their own library. The staff was very welcoming and very knowledgeable about the history showcased. They offered personal insight about many of the items exhibited. The museum also offers books and other items for sale. My husband and I are both senior citizens and the museum exhibits brought back many memories.

Wifee and I went to this place under another name of Alexandria Black History Museum at 902 Wythe St. It used to be the original first black library. They have historic story of how it came to be and how the 5 black youths got themselves arrested to make their point and build this library.

So glad to have found this museum - very interesting. Lovely staff. Nestled away in a corner of Old Town Alexandria but worth the trip.
