I'm including a photo taken from 20th Street at 1st Avenue. Many of the windows were missing, which actually made the buildings more interesting to see because they looked ghostly. I didn't check for information about what's happening or for a timeline.

We visited here on the Ghosts and Graveyards Driving Tour and our guide gave us a history of the founding on Birmingham and the developments in industry that led to the construction of these large buildings in the early 1900s. These buildings were the tallest in the south at the time they were constructed and the fact that they were located on adjacent streets in a blossoming city was pretty amazing. There were ghosts associated with three of the buildings.

This sign and buildings around the intersection are telling story about Birmingham’s history. There are many empty and damaged office buildings in the downtown. This is also telling the story.

Elyton is a delightful hotel on the “heaviest corner”. Check out architecture from other buildings from ‘Moonshine’, which is Elyton’s rooftop bar. No checkin guest pass required to get to the bar, and it has an indoor seating area as well as an outdoor seating patio.

It is always a shock to me every time I look at this building and know that it is the heaviest corner on earth. You would think some of the other taller buildings would have that label. But it is hee in good old Alabama.

This intersection was named the heaviest corner on earth in the early 1900s when these great early skyscrapers were built. ENjoy the beautiful architecture and get the fell of what classics buildings looked like before chrome and glass.

Got a chance to tour the old bank building, now known as the John Hand building. Lots of history and learning to be had.

There isn't really much to see here, but the history is really cool. The Elyton is part of the Heaviest Corner and has a rooftop bar called Moonshine which is something really cool to go to. I also recommend going to Chocolatá while in the area.

By the time the buildings at the intersection of 1st Avenue North and 20th Street were completed in the 1910’s, the area quickly became known as the “Heaviest Corner on Earth”.
This is interesting and worth a walkabout for a few reasons:
1. The buildings are still there. Nothing has been torn down. All are either restored or on the way to being restored. 4 skyscrapers over 100 years old on the same corner in a city that is relatively small by big-city standards.
2. The title itself captures both the over-the-top advertising/promotion attached to development projects and growing young cities back in the day.
3. These buildings capture the sense that Birmingham was this “Magic City”. From not existing until after the Civil War, Birmingham showed promise of becoming something significant.
4. There is no cost.
5. If on foot, take a ride up to the rooftop bar at the Elyton Hotel for a better since of the architecture of these old buildings.

This was almost humorous, but interesting nonetheless. We walked over the large medallion by accident as we were scoping out restaurants for brunch. From the reading of the inscription in the sidewalk (yes, it's just a large circle in the cement with a cursory description) you wouldn't really understand what the big deal was. When we ate at a restaurant located on that corner, the waiter informed us of the story behind the strange label. From looking at it you wouldn't know that the buildings on all sides were among the first steel skyscrapers in the southeast. I'm sure at the time it was quite the curiosity but in today's world it doesn't have the same impact. Today, it's "just a street corner".
