About 5 km from Podgorica there is this site with free access where you can see the forum, two spas and a basilica. Signs indicate each structure.

A deserted place without due maintenance. But it's still worth visiting in good weather. Because it's very acient history. And it's close to Podgorica - just about 10-15 mins from the city center by car.

Duklja is 2,000 years old, and its managers manage it extremely shamefully. When we got there, we looked for an entrance where we could buy a ticket, but we couldn't find it. Then we noticed that the door was open and anyone could walk in and do whatever he wanted without control. The place is definitely worth a visit and can compete with many popular archaeological sites. So my rating (1) is for the managers, and the place itself deserves the highest rating (5).

After Forum Romano this place does not impress a lot, but still if you are a history fan visit Duklija ruins to learn a bit more about Montenegro.

I still haven't figured out the spelling for this! It's Duklja in Google maps, but Doclea when I am doing all of my research. So let's go with the latter. Doclea was an ancient Illyrian, Roman and Byzantine city. This was the largest city of the Docleatae tribe and it became a city under the reign of Emperor Claudius between 41 and 54 AD. It had between 8,000 and 10,000 inhabitants.

This was the old capital of Montenegro. These ruins are 2,000 years old! There are definitely Roman influences as you can see some of the tablets that are inscribed and there are some columns as well. It was an hour walk out from the Northeast of the Podgorica.

Unfortunately the people there took away from the experience. There were 2 sights. One that had no fencing and basically had rubble. There were people just handing out and there were a lot of beer bottles and trash around this site. We thought there had to be more based on the pictures we saw online. This lead us to walking around where we found the proper ruins. This area was fenced in and looked more like ruins. Unfortunately, the locals treated this area like a playground. Kids were running around and screaming and climbing on the ruins. People were sitting on these 2,000 year old structures and it was weird that these ruins did not have the respect and control like we saw in Chichén Itzá or Tulum.

If you go, make sure to go during the week. We went on a Sunday which may have explained all the people there. If you have this site all to yourself, or at least mostly, this is a place to spend an hour or two reading the signs explaining the buildings that previously stood at the location and walking around the ruins.

Duklja is easy to reach. When you take the old road towards Danilovgrad, you turn towards the settlement of Rogami. It is only 3 km away from Podgorica. You can park your car on the meadow across from the entrance.
We did not pay the entrance ticket, and there is no curator.
Duklja doesn't have much to offer. But we were thrilled with the skill of the ancient builders. Part of the buildings show the superior art of Roman stonemasons. Definitely a place worth visiting.

This place is most interesting, because it remains mostly untouched. The vast field bordering on a rural community and a rail track reveals the remains (mostly foundations and some walls) of the ancient roman settlement Duclea. The remains that can be easily identified include a bath house, and the town forum. Worth the visit especially for history, archeology and photography buffs.

Trebalo bi obavezno da se obidju ostaci starog rimskog grada Duclea , na žalost nedovoljno sačuvanog i nedovoljno vrjednovanog.

Although I've awarded four stars, I do agree with some of the posters here who say it is a) hard to get to, and b) a pile of old stones. However where these "old stones" in the UK I can say with certainty that they would be up there with anything on Hadrian's Wall, and you would pay £££ accordingly (and that would be just for the car parking!). Instead what you have here is a wonderfully unspoilt site, with free unfettered access, and more tortoises than people for company. To get there head north on the main road on the west bank of the river. Eventually the road will split and a right hand fork takes you to the site via an impressive modern bridge. I walked and it took about 45 minutes at a brisk stroll. The site is split in three by the road and the railway. The section in the middle has been the most excavated and contains remains of the forum, two bath houses, and temple and a basilica. The remains in the other two sections are far less intelligible. There are no facilities at the site.
