Spectacular Topography and Interesting Lore
dic. de 2015 • Parejas
We arrived at Australia's Shipwreck Coast as part of a day-tour group and, fortunately, we had a very informative tour guide. In addition to seeing the spectacular cliffs and limestone sculptures carved by waves crashing into the coast, I learned that boats have crashed into this same coast ... lots of boats.

The shipwreck coast is 130 km long, from Port Fairy to Cape Otway. An early Australian explorer said, "I have seldom seen a more fearful section of coastline" and for good reason. More than 600 ships met their doom along this section of coast, and less than 250 wrecks were ever found.

Our tour guide told us the tale of the Loch Ard wreck in 1878 and its only two survivors - a cabin boy, Tom Pearce, and passenger Eva Carmichael. Tom Pearce eventually established a homestead and farm on the shore where he pulled himself and Eva out of the water.

According to Lonely Planet, the Twelve Apostles section of the Shipwreck Coastline is ranked in the top ten of places to visit before you die. Don't miss this natural wonder.
