For the senior rate of $8 each we had a guided tour of the Zane Gray home and then self-guided tour of the museum. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and took his time with us answering all questions. The museum is a must stop if you are interested in the history of the area. Very well done and informative. Would recommend to any visitors to Payson.

I really didn't know too much about Zane Grey
Very complex man.
I also knee nothing about Crook and the Apaches. Very informative.

We enjoyed the museum and the tour of the replica of Zane Grey's cabin. The cabin is beautiful. The docents were very informative and pleasant. We learned a lot about Zane Grey whom we only remembered having written some westerns. He lead an interesting life and we are looking forward to learning more. The Gift Shop sells some of his books as well as books detailing the Rim Country history, and unique gift items. The property is beautiful adjacent to the lake. Visit and you won't be disappointed.

The rim country museum is a great outing for anyone.
It tells of the history of the area, the pioneers and the buildings around the Payson area.
There's also Zane Gray's cabin to go through and a lot of history of his life. The tour has a fee but this supports the museum and historical items.

There is so much to see here you must plan for two hours or more. Zane Gray cabin though a recreation is interesting, the museum next door is a bargain.

A great stop to get a taste of the history and geography of Payson. Very kind and knowledgable docents who care about passing on the history of the area to the generations to come. The museum is very well done with good attention to details.
We stopped before doing more exploring of the area and were glad that we did!

Loved the live narrated tour of the Zane Grey's house. Really brought the history to life. The museum was great for a small museum. Very interesting and lots to learn about living in this area of the Rim.

It’s cute to go back. I lived in the house after I was born in Payson. We were the last family to live there. The lake used to be a horse pasture and my mom has a photo of me in the pond on the side of that house.

For the nominal price of $4 per senior, we had a personal history lesson about the area of Payson, it's industry over the years, and stories of the Native Americans in the area provided by an extremely knowledgable docent. The admission also included a tour of a reproduction of the cabin that Zane Gray had in the Tonto National Forest. During that tour we were treated to interesting facts of his life and career. This is a "don't miss" stop if you are a history buff.

We spent about 90 minutes on a Friday afternoon visiting the museum and Zane Grey Cabin. The museum is located in the oldest remaining Forest Ranger Station in the southwest, built in 1907. It's modest in size, but there are some interesting exhibits about local geology and the peoples who have inhabited the region through history. There's a small admission fee and tours are led by a docent. The museum is on two levels but they do have a stair-lift for those with mobility issues. I was disappointed that they do not allow photography. A small shop offers a good variety of books, local goods and souvenirs. There are more exhibits outside, including a vintage fire truck and fire-spotting tower, and a log cabin built in the early 1900s (no charge for the outdoor exhibits). We also toured the Zane Grey cabin next to the museum, which is a reproduction of his original that was lost to fire. Although I haven't read any of Zane Grey's novels, I enjoyed the information and anecdotes shared by the docent in the Grey cabin more than the museum, and it made me curious to read one. These attractions are adjacent to Green Valley Park, which has a lovely paved walking trail around a lake that attracts waterfowl. We were thrilled to see a bald eagle! The museum's not a place I would go out of my way to visit, but when combined with a visit to Mogollon Rim and Tonto Natural Bridge, it made a nice weekend getaway.

My husband, Ray Burhop, is an author and doing research on Payson and one of your pioneers, Paul Vogel. He is looking for Sandra Carson's email address or perhaps a docent who can help him with his research. He will be making a trip to Payson in Oct and would appreciate a contact. Thank You.

I highly suggest contacting personnel at the museum. It appears each of the docents has some specific area of interest that may be helpful. I am confident someone on staff could recommend contacts whether one is knowledgeable because of learned information or a local steeped in the Payson history.
