There is a good variety of drinking establishments of several types around the square but this one is special. On summer evenings there are outside tables where the atmosphere is very good.
There is a good range of ales, all perfectly brewed and presented.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
We were staying nearby and were frequent viisitors durin our stay.

What a gem to find it stands next to the cross keys hotel. Only a tiny pub but the atmosphere is second to none. It is a micro brewery the ales are of good quality and well kept also served at the correct temperature. Hope to start food middle of April. A must for visitors and locals alike.

Called in during Saturday as the races we planned to attend were cancelled and we enjoyed our stay.
The bar area is small and popular so took a little time to get served but it was okay and found a nice seat outside to enjoy the sun while having a nice beer.
Very popular place due to the numbers attending which is always a good sign, well worth calling in.

Have to comment on other people's review and my own. Firstly yes it has been there since 2015 but has changed hands 3 times since, at the moment the bar person has a despicable attitude to the senior population who visit the bar my experience was very upsetting when a couple came to the bar and asked do we need to order inside or is there service outside? He said as he collected 2 glasses inside is where you order, the two people where around late ... the bar was quiet he was not busy at all and instead of saying just take a seat and I will serve you what would you like, he made the gentleman go in the bar and order for the two of them. Disgusting service and bad attitude, in kelso we pride ourselves in looking after our older generation and this imbecile needs attitude discipline. The lady had to move 5 chairs to get to a table except when I stood up and moved them for her to sit down to spend money in his pub, shocking, go somewhere else like the cross keys hotel, sit outside with service or the queen's head believe me its cheaper as well, they all serve the same drinks without the rip off prices in rutherfords even the ednam house is cheaper and a great view over the river tweed. Kelso residents stand together with respect for our elders and this is not a place where you are respected at all he only wants your money and charges for no service, bad attitude and pompas tongue. Be forwarned

Unwelcoming place(not what it used to be a few years ago. Must have changed hands).
Seemed the guy behind the bar could have done without customers on this day. I enjoy places that have a warm welcome( in smaller towns especially!)
Then a young girl who brought bags of ice from a local supermarket proceeded to smash the bags on the floor(to break up the cubes of ice I presume !) then rested the bag on the ice bucket already containing ice then ripped open the bag and emptied it into the said ice bucket . The bag already mixed into the other ice cubes in the ice bucket!! Certainly not a hygienic practise! But must happen regularly as nobody stopped her from behind the bar.
Be careful of this place as hygiene standards are low. (Never seen the barman wash his hands once while preparing food)

Just moved into Kelso and had heard great things about Rutherfords....but sadly this must have been under the previous owners.
Sat afternoon, middle of a heatwave and only one bar person working, nice as he was, he couldn't cope with the volume of customers. Place was dirty with used glasses & bottles piled high, advertising drinks that they no longer serve, luggage taking up seats, the only lager in this micropub was bottled German lager.
They only take cash...despite having signs for visa, Mastercard etc. on the front door.
Its a real shame that it was so shambolic, as I really wanted to like this place and make it my new local, but dont think I will be back.

When we visited Kelso in August 2022 it was during a period of extremely good weather, the kind of conditions that warrant going somewhere good for a cooling drink.
We visited Rutherfords both days we were in Kelso and while I had a different pint on each occasion, my wife had a half pint of different beers to what I chose. It was interesting to taste all 4 brews and note the various flavours.
Well worth visiting.

Visited this cool little micro pub twice on two cold wintery days and had the warmest of welcomes. Superb beers and gins. Cozy and quirky, friendly atmosphere and even a folk group who put a huge smile on our faces with their rendition of BeeGees ‘Stayin’ Alive’ :-)

best avoided, this is supposedly a micro brewery pub arrived, asked what lager they had, only one and it was bottled. Friends arrived, one wanted a lager, they didnt have any cold ones. Other friend wanted a mineral water, they dont sell it. went to pay, no contactless or credit cards, cash only.
all in all a waste of time, best avoided.

I am devastated that I have to leave such a bad review for my favourite place! When Debbie and Simon Rutherford owned this place, it was incredibly special and the ales were amazing! Such a warm welcome every time and you were made to feel really like part of the family. They apparently sold the business earlier this year, and Rutherfords has gone vastly downhill! Visited with a friend, and couldn't believe what we saw. The place was dirty, disorganised (no loo roll in the ladies), and the beer was actually WARM! The amazing system that was so part of the pub was gone, there was very little choice, and they only take cash....? We won't be back, and this is a really sad loss to the town....

Hi. Yes we sell Craft Spirits which you won't find in Supermarkets. A great selection of whiskies, gins (both Scottish and American), Real Mead as well as several 'rarities' such as Rumbullion and Moonshine!
