The permits for Booth's Rock Trail open 5 days in advance, and due to the small parking lot at the trailhead and considering the narrow road leading to the trailhead, the permit quantity is much lower. I refreshed the page at 7 am sharp and there were no slots available. I was initially let down by it, until reservations start to drop down. I was able to snag a spot at 7:19 am.
Upon booking, I was hesitant and concerned about the Difficult rating of the trail. In our party, I have a 64 year old who has knee issues and a 74 year old who has no hiking experience.
The first third of the trail was flat and offers great views of the smaller ponds in the area, as well as a portaging route. The second third of the trail was the steepest and was the most challenging. Some parts were totally muddy and had to navigate off-trail or step on the roots. The footsteps of hikers' misfortunes on the mud were the warning sign. I witnessed a hiker who slipped down because the dog pulled him. Oof. Thankfully it was dry in that area.
Afterwards, we were greeted by the iconic viewpoints of the lake. The first viewpoint featured a dead tree blocking the view, but still awesome regardless. The second viewpoint has the clear vantage point and that's where we took the most photos. The third viewpoint also had slightly obstructed view by two dead trees, but there was an interesting rock cut which you can scoot over and lean against the cliff edge. Very thrilling.
The last third of the trail was downstairs (yes, stairs) which leads to the old railway bed that has awesome views of the lake. One side features the shoreline which you can access slightly off-trail, and the other side features wetlands and beaver dams.
Overall, we have all enjoyed the trail across all ages and while it was challenging, it wasn't as intense as I thought as we didn't need to physically climb, which I expected for a Difficult-rated hike. This is still a moderate for me. Probably the upper half of moderate difficulty.

This was the highlight of our Hwy 60 corridor visit to Algonquin. I would advise taking the same trail up as you do to descend as the designated return trail is below the level of the adjacent beaver pond and quite a few portions are very unavoidably soggy. We did the entire round trip in 1 hr 50 minutes plus we spent an hour enjoying the overlook. We disagree with the rating of difficult, my wife has some health issues and enjoyed the hike greatly. The cliffs have no railings, be advised of this before going.

Het was een erg mooie tocht, het begin was erg veel klimmen, maar vanaf halverwege werd het een erg makkelijke tocht. Al met al een prachtige tocht

We had stayed at Rock Lake in 2020, but didn't realize the Booth Rock hiking trail was right beside us. We were staying at Lake of 2 Rivers Campground in August 2021 and noticed this trail from the park newspaper and decided to try it. Again, the paper suggested 3 hours for this hike, but we completed it in 2 hours. Seems to be a common theme with the time suggestions in the paper. We are not speedy hikers. About average, I would say. The hike is 5.1km and has a fair bit of elevation, but it's gradual and didn't feel like it was too challenging. The views from the lookout were spectacular. Definitely worth the time to do this hike!

Excellent trail for a family outing.. grandkids should be 6 and over as cliffs are dangerous. Start early and enjoy lunch at the lookout

A worthwhile 5k with decent elevation crowned by spectacular views.
Bring good shoes and be ready for some soggy patches along the way.

Great trail with great views and fall colours. Lots of climbs to get to lookouts but manageable for most people and worth the effort, lots of mushrooms during fall.

Birthday getaway from the city, and this hike has it all. We brought our dog had his leash but not to packed we’re he can roam a bit. The cliffs are pretty safe, amazing views. If you love trees a lot of amazing old trees with roots in the ground! Very peaceful! Up and down hill at times made it a good work out! Definitely recommend this trail, a local recommended it to us!! Not to long of a hike. 3 hrs stopping and going.

As previous reviews mention I would not recommend completing this hike counter clockwise unless in great physical condition. Most of the climb this way would be on stairs. Clockwise still a fairly strenuous climb on a trail The views have steep dangerous drop offs which reward the hiker with fabulous views from lookouts. Approximate distance 5km.

What is the best time of the day to see the fall colors?
Escrita el 16 de septiembre de 2018
Hello. We are planning our first fall camping experience at Algonquin Park (during Thanksgiving weekend) and was looking into doing the booth's rock trail. We are not athletic but in reading some reviews, seems doable if we take breaks in between. Seeing that it's a difficult trail, would you say that the trail is well marked with blue reflectors? I remember being on some trails where the signage were not frequent enough or not well maintained which in turn causes discomfort for me. Wondering if it will be busy during thanksgiving long weekend?
Escrita el 15 de agosto de 2017
I cannot speak on if it will be busy at Thanksgiving, but when we were there in Aug. last year we only met a few people on the trail.
Our group ranged from 8 to 50+ of a wide range of fitness levels and we had no problem with the trail. I do not remember if the trails were marked well, but I rarely look for the markers.
Have fun, you will do alright.
