I would highly recommend this easy to stop by roadside attraction. There is plenty of free parking and a nature trail that runs alongside the cove teaches you facts about the elephant seals. They are very enjoyable to watch and to hear them bellow will make you laugh which is always good medicine for the soul. You can also take the trail along to the lighthouse which is accessed by the smaller parking lot a little ways up from the first one going north. All in all, a very educational and worthwhile stop. The scenery is also truly beautiful for picture-taking.

Though the Castle is the main attraction visited by tourist; the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse Station is highly recommended.
Well organized volunteers help the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse Committee to guide tourist through the history of the Lighthouse Station. It includes marine mammals presentation that is really informative especially for kids. Also, the nature and sound of the ocean are really captivating.
In my humble opinion, even though the Castle is must see just to check mark the line of things to see in Cambria; the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse tour is more appealing than a big house of a narcissist rich person.
Highly recommended!

This was really great, and the waves crashing onto the path and see whales break right in front of us was pretty amazing. The only bummer was that you are not allowed up to the tower which was definitely a minus. Otherwise fantastic

Stopped to look at a group of Elephant seals basking in the last of the sunlight. Then watched one of the best sunsets of the whole trip - fabulous.

I enjoy the history of such places as this and the volunteer tour guides are knowledgable. Someone had mentioned they felt the tour was a bit long and this could possibly be true if you don't like history or natural history. It was a bit warm when we were there but we enjoyed it nevertheless.

We were in San Simeon for a long weekend and decided to take a tour of the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, or Light Station as it's called. Tours run on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and reservations for small groups aren’t necessary. The meeting place is at the abandoned Piedras Blancas Motel on Highway 1, about 1.5 miles north of the lighthouse. Be sure to check their website for details. Upon arrival, we were met by a volunteer and waited about 20-30 minutes as more and more people arrived.
After paying the $10 entrance fee, we drove in our own cars to the lighthouse, where we were split into groups of about 10. This day, there were 4 groups, each of which had their own guide, and each group went a different way. Our guide, Gary, was very knowledgeable and took us on an easy walk past the Fog Signal Building, along the ocean, and eventually up to the lighthouse itself. You can go inside, but can't climb the stairs. The tour takes about 2 ½ hours and Gary told us a lot about the history of the area, the Light Station and what it was like to work there. It was well worth the $10 and 2 ½ hours of our Saturday morning. We would highly recommend it if you're in the area!!

The tour is well organized and we had an excellent tour guide. It is a very easy walking/strolling tour. The only thing for us was we felt the tour could have been done in an hour. We are not necessarily tour people with long attention spans, but....we still feel it was too long. If you love learning detailed history of the light station and local wildlife and sea life, this tour is perfect.

We learned a lot about the light station and the surrounding area. Gary was our tour guide and he was like an encyclopedia. He knew a lot about the marine biology and even told us a lot about the condors they are reintroducing in the area. This is a great tour.

Glad we made it in time to do this tour. They meet one time a day in the parking lot of an old abandoned motel up the street from the actual Lighthouse for a quick orientation; there is an outhouse for use before you get to the lighthouse.
We followed the guide back to the lighthouse and through where they open the gate for the ticket holders - tickets are provided during orientation.
This was an informative Interesting tour and our guide was quite knowledgeable. The guides are volunteers who do this I'm sure because they just love where they live. The fee to get in is nominal and I believe goes back into maintaining the property so tipping the guide was well worth it.

This is a wonderful and informative tour. Our guide, Zale, was excellent. He gave us the scoop on all the flora, fauna, and sea life as well as the interesting history of the station. Worth way more that the $10 fee.

Their website has the days and times (morning). There are more days available during summer. I believe you can make reservations but you probably don't need to. They have many docents and split up the crowd that arrives into smaller groups.

My name is Theresa McBeth. My grandfather was Clifford E. McBeth who was a lighthouse keeper and my father was Clifford L. McBeth who grew up at the light station. I would like to know the best time of year to come visit the light station and see where my grandfather worked and my father grew up. I live in Medford, OR so I will either drive or fly. Maybe some ideas on where I could stay also. I am planning on being in the Cambria area for at least a week.

The lighthouse is very well restored and I think you will enjoy your visit. Storms are active through Feb/March and i would come after that for a more pleasant stay. If you are staying in Cambria for a week, I would use that as your base to go see the light house. It is about a half hour drive from there. Be sure to go past the light house to the old small motel which is where the tour begins, Allow time to visit Hearst Castle while you are here.

They offer tours every day except Sunday & Wednesday. No reservations required. Visitors meet at 9:45 a.m. at the former Piedras Blancas Motel located 1.5 miles north of the light station on Highway 1.
