Close to Calgary with many nice views. You will need a park pass if you are planning to stop. Something to see if you are in the area.

We were surprised by the number of people who flocked to the "beach" here on a hot day. When I say beach, please note that this is a rocky area used to build the dam. When in the water, the surface of the beach is very clay-like and slippery.
The water had a great cooling effect on us and the grandkids, as it was extremely hot out ( 37 Deg C). Nobody seemed to mind the heat. People had day tents and umbrellas pitched for the day and may brought food for a picnic. A nice spot.

Just across the road! Don't miss it.
You can go there for a canoe ride or a hike.
Be warn though, there's not trees so the sun is heavy on you!

There is so much to see in Kananaskis, that I have always driven by areas like Barrier Lake for years. However on November 4th I stopped in to visit the area. It was a super windy day, and there were only a couple of people at the lake, but more people in the parking lot, so my timing was perfect. There are some nice views here, as well as a 7.7 km trail hike. I hear the lake is often used for kayaking and canoeing during the summer, so I will likely return next summer to check it out.

This glacial fed lake is a wonderful spot to use a kayak/canoe/SUP that you bring or rent onsite. It is also a beautiful spot to picnic with a family, go on hikes but no swimming the water is too chilly.
Go early in the busy seasons as it can get really full by early afternoon especially on the weekends.

This is a nice stop right off the highway. Lots of parking. When we were there it had a kayak, paddle board rental trailer there. Not crowded as the lake has a huge almost sandy shoreline. Kids were swimming in the water. Great for a picnic!

The map for this attraction is wrong, so let's hope Tripadvisor changes it. There are a few spots on Barrier Lake that you can enjoy the water and scenery. The first one you see on your way in from the Trans Canada Highway, has increased its parking capacity, so if you can find a spot, you're lucky. There are other options further along that have fewer parking stalls, but are also less well known, so they are worth exploring. On our recent visit, the lake had an emerald green colour similar to Lake Louise. If you can find decent parking, the lake is huge and you can find a spot just for yourself. CAUTION: Alberta Park recommends taking your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer as it cannot guarantee these are available in their pit toilets.

This is a beautiful mountain lake just off highway 40. It is much larger than expected as seen from the highway. New parking area to the north has made it easier to access - and the old parking to the south is still there too. Depending on the time of the year the depth changes (and is regulated); but when it is deep it ahs an amazing deep blue hue that gets more intensive when you are looking down on the lake from the mountains (great trails) that surround it.

We visited Barrier Lake last week (end of August) and the views/scenery was fantastic.
We followed the trail to climb the overlooking mountain, and the track was very nice to walk up as wider than many. The last part of the ascent was somewhat steeper, but upon reaching the summit, the views were breathtaking.

We came here with our two teens, ages 17 & 15. We arrived around 11am on the Sunday of the Aug long weekend. Lower parking lot was full, but there were still plenty of kayaks/SUP/canoes to rent at that time. By noon, most of the rentals were gone and there was a lineup of people waiting for kayaks, etc to be returned. I'd recommend going early if you need to rent, especially on a beautiful day of a long weekend.

The lake itself is gorgeous and there is a sandy beach area for little ones to play! Dogs are allowed, and both our dogs thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the canoe and fetching balls in the water. Bring your portable bbqs/chairs and spend the day here! The mountain scenery is absolutely beautiful.
