The museum was created in 1931 to honor the 300th anniversary of Deleware's first European settlement in 1631. The museum houses displays relating to military, maritime and culture. There are a number of exhibits touching on the Dutch influence in the area dating back to the 1600's. The staff are both knowledgeable and friendly to approach for any questions you may have to ask. Next door, housed inside a gambrel-roofed 1730's farmhouse, there is a tourist office, displaying walking-tour maps of the town and it's numerous 18th century homes within the historical district.

The Zwaanendael Museum is an interesting little museum. The museum houses the history and development of Lewes from a Dutch Colony to the modern shipping and trading town that it became.

The museum showcases shipwrecks, shipping and trading and it even have a mermaid on the second floor. I thought that was interesting. The museum had a display of Deftware, which was a Dutch pottery and displays on the railroad and fishing industries as well.

The nice part is that the museum is free to the public and it was very crowded on this sunny afternoon.

The museum building is interesting and the story behind why it was built. The shipping history contained within is limited however and there is no ADA access to the second floor exhibits. The adjoining Town Park is quite nice and worth getting out of your car to walk around the park and peak inside the museum building. Only works if you can find a parking spot in the area.

We had stopped to rest on a bench near the door of the museum, when a staff member came out to put up a sign that the museum was open. We decided to go in and were glad we did.
The young man at the front desk was extremely knowledgable about the history of the area and the artifacts of many kinds in the museum. It is marvelous to speak with someone who is so enthusiastic about his work! There are many interesting exhibits on both floors, and the gardens behind the very photogenic building are lovely, with the added bonus of very clean public bathrooms.

This museum has extraordinary architecture and the grounds are beautifully landscaped. That being said, the exhibits held my interest for no more than 20 minutes. The staff was friendly and willing to answer any questions posed by my husband.

Zwaanendael Museum is the must-see attraction in downtown Lewes, Del.

In 1631, the Dutch founded a settlement, Zwaanendael ("Swan Valley") on Lewes' current site. In 1931, Zwaanendael Museum was built to mark that settlement's 300th anniversary. In tribute to the Dutch, the museum was modeled on a former city hall in Hoorn, Netherlands. It includes many traditional Dutch design elements, such as terracotta tiles, stepped gables and colorful shutters. Look up to see the roof-riding statue of David Pietersen de Vries, who led the expedition that founded Zwaanendael.

TIPS:

--Admission to the museum's exhibits on local history, shipwrecks and lighthouse is free. Closed on Sundays and Mondays though.

--Be sure to walk around Zwaanendael Park and Herb Garden (see my review, "A little piece of Holland") and to visit the Zwaanendael Club just across Savannah Road (see my review, "Cute clubhouse").

The building's architecture was inspired by the town hall of Hoorn, North Holland, former seat of the Dutch West India Company which oversaw the trade in the Dutch colony of New Netherland, i.e. New York, New Jersey and parts of Pennsylvania nd Delaware. The museum focuses on the significant archeological finds of De Braak, a late 18th century fighting sloop that was lost at sea near Lewes. Upstairs is an exhibit about railroads and their contribution to the economic development of rural Delaware. Almost no information about the ties between Lewes when it was Dutch Zwaanendael and the Netherlands.

Good but small museum. Knowledgeable docents on each floor. Free admission! This museum is run by State of Delaware. Educational use of our taxpayer dollars . The building exterior is very picturesque and very Dutch. The train and shipwreck information was cool. The maps of the area with train schedule information related good information on the growth of Delmarva. However it is so small I wouldn’t recommend a special trip. Don’t miss this if you are in Downtown Lewes and have any interest in seventeen and 18th century local history. We went through it thoroughly in the 45 minute tour time. Stairs and outdoor restrooms behind it were not ideal.

We dropped by for a private visit during the COVID 19 crisis. The team was excellent with great answers to some simple questions. The 2nd floor was closed, so we weren't able to see the full display.
