Mid Nov to mid Dec 2023 was the best time to see bears Between 4 Mile and 5.5 Mile marker first a family of 3 Shy but were easy to see along the trail. Then Came along a Family of 4 they loved the trail way to much and wanted to make the trail their new home and invited the other three to Join them so the cubs could play Mothers were protective at first but soon got use to getting out of the way of Hikers, Some Hikers were just as scared of the bears as the Bears of them. Finally, a Femal jogger scared the Family of 4 as much as they scared her and they then jumped into the water and swam and walked across the 1/2 mile of marsh out of the Bear trail area for good. Borred the other family left a few days later. But Boo Boo (my name for him) the three Lagged Bear that lives to the right of the trail starting point can been seen many nights right around sunset when he comes out to see if anyone left any food on the trail by accident, he is often seen around the homes outside the park checking out the local trash cans for an easy quick snack. I have seen 8 Bears on the same day and no bears for months other days I have seen many water birds, Owls plus at the 2.5 Mile Mark don't look up at the 25 very fat Buzzards they can be intimidating the same with the wild Bores where the males can be aggressive when the little ones are around, You have to look close to see the Alligators they sleep along the trail and look fake at first glance. I have seen deer. snakes, one river otter and more Mosquitoes than one might expect so use lots of protection on all exposed skin and any thin clothing. Hardy shoes are needed unless your just going out the first 2 miles along the river and then back to the parking lot (I would not recommend walking out after a rain without boots). I have never seen the parking lot full but close to it on new year's weekend. Great place to get away from the city life and take a small look at animals and nature in the wild and get some good exercise at 7.1 miles long.

We did the full walk on the Saturday of the Labour Day weekend, it was surprisingly quiet. It was warm out and very humid, so we 'felt' the 7miles. But, it was a very interesting and varied walk. Well maintained boardwalk sections, and paths good. The beginning out towards the boardwalk is full of roots you need to navigate but we had a great time.

Very well maintained trail. There are a lot of tree roots so seniors be careful. Lots of bird life close to the river. Idiot people with unleashed dogs and dog poop on the wood path.

This was a fantastic hike. I did it backwards which I thought was much better. If you do, you finish along the river for 4.5 miles of gorgeous scenery. The first 2.5 (technically the last if you go the normal way) are very cool through the forest but finishing along that river is amazing. Definitely a rooty hike half of the time so be careful. I did the 7 miles in 1:42, brisk pace that almost made the terrain easier.

We arrived to hike this 7.1 mile loop trail at 8:30am. The small parking area already had several cars. The trail winds through marsh & floodplains with an abundance of hardwoods & foliage which borders several miles of St Johns River. We started the loop counter clockwise & glad we did. We enjoyed this direction better as the last couple miles were the least visually appealing & less strenuous. The trail was narrow with numerous tree roots, drop offs & required careful footing. Glad we wore proper hiking shoes. We were surprised to see people running by. The many boardwalks & peekaboo views of St Johns River along the way are nice. The trail is mostly shaded by the many trees & foliage. There are park benches occasionally along the way. We saw a deer, alligators, butterflies & many birds. Approximately 3.5 miles in there is a primitive camp site with a bbq & picnic bench one of which is covered. There are no restroom facilities anywhere on site. To hike the entire trail with stopping for pictures & nourishment took us 3.5 hours.

Very rooty walk when not on boardwalks. Nice adventure through Florida swap that goes down to the river. Very little wildlife. Worth a trip on day that is not too hot.

A lot of fun for me and my friends. Please remember to bring water and use the restroom before you get there.
It is 7 miles of uneven terrain that is so beautiful.

This trail is usually not crowded, and mostly in shade. BUT, bring water and comfortable, sturdy shoes. Best in mornings while it's a little cooler. A perfect trail to get away for a couple hours, and right in our own neighborhood. Hogs, Deer, Gators, and many species of birds. There's also a small picnic area about half way. Nice trail.

I usually go here once or twice a week. I absolutely love it. I’m not an extreme hiker so the trails here are just perfect for me. Yes it is root heavy in parts but it’s not something that is so challenging you can’t step over, unless maybe you’re 103 and can’t walk well.
The wildlife here can be hit or miss, ive been days where I’ve seen lots of gators, birds, snakes, turkeys, etc. and I’ve been days I haven’t seen anything but an annoying fly.
The trees provide perfect cover from the sun but it still gets very hot, pack plenty of water. The 7 mile loop can be done in about 3 hours if you’re there to walk, but if you’re like me and stop a lot to look for wildlife it’s gonna take awhile.
Highly recommended, weekdays are very quiet here.

It’s Florida in July. Go early. Bring extra extra water. Hasn’t rained a ton so path isn’t wet. Don’t have to do the whole 7 miles obviously.

Is it safe despite the alligators, bears and snakes?
Escrita el 2 de diciembre de 2018
Yes! We personally only saw a small gator in the distance. If you do see one of the names creatures, most wont mess with you if you don’t mess with them. Wouldn’t bring my dog though just in case. Also, watch your step while on the trail to make she you don’t step on a snake.

Is the Black Wilderness currently closed? The Seminole County website says so, but it has said so for a very long time.
Thanks.

It is open. There are times it will close if there has been a recent storm.

I would love to see bears in the wild! Have people had much luck seeing them?
What is the safest thing to do if you do encounter them?
Thanks!

I see them pretty regularly around my neighborhood. I have seen them a few times in the Black Bear Wilderness area. The safest thing to do is make noise when you are walking in the woods so that you don’t sneak up on them. I have only ever seen a bear being cautious about me, it will stare and then walk away. If it is a mother bear she will be more aggressive but only by giving you plenty of warning that she thinks you are too close. She may make huffing noises and stomp her foot. They are beautiful animals and it is always a pleasure to see one.

Is this hike good for a 12 year old and is there ample parking? thanks!
Escrita el 24 de febrero de 2017
Yes, it is appropriate for a 12 year old. During our dry period the park was shut down, but it has been raining now so should be OK to go. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Is it "safe" to walk alone?
Escrita el 14 de noviembre de 2016
I do all the time but I'm a dude. For women, I would say yes cause I've never seen any creepers here. I would still bring mace or other protection just cause we're so close to Orlando and there are a lot of freaks in Orlando.

Is it possible to do this trail on a mountain bike?
Escrita el 5 de mayo de 2016
We saw bike tracks as well and my husband and I both thought it would be a bit crazy to try to ride a bike there - some parts seemed impossible, I guess you can walk the bike. Then again - we are walkers (not like in TWD), not bikers.
