This trio of locally quarried yellow limestone railroad bridges were built between 1852 and 1855 as the new Illinois Central Railroad was building its first rail lines across the state. The first train crossed over them on February 1, 1855, and they remained in service until 1985. Plans by the city to subsequently have them demolished were met by protests by local citizens. Their addition to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 has since protected them. They thus remain an important reminder of the significant role that the Illinois Central has had in the economic development and prosperity of Dixon.
While all three bridges are of similar design, they are slightly different from one another due to changes in grade, etc. between their sites - the 3rd St. bridge is the shortest in height, but the longest in length. Due to the former characteristic, she is known sometimes as the "little sister." Further study of the individual bridges will lead to the revelation that no mortar is used in their construction - the individual stones are held in place by keys cut into them that interlock with their neighbors.
To make them easier to find, here are their individual latitudes and longitudes that can be fed into your GPS unit: 1st St. (41.841825, -89.489979), 2nd St. (41.840892, -89.489524), and 3rd St. (41.839952, -89.489127).

My wife and I had come down from Chicago to check out the many sites in Dixon. We checked out the bridges on 1st, 2nd and 3rd streets. These types of bridges are really amazing and especially since how old they are. Neat to see the type of construction they used from that log ago.

In Dixon, IL, just West of Monroe Avenue on 1st Street, 2nd Street, and 3rd Street are three Stone arch bridges. They display beautiful design and engineering. Built for the Illinois Central railroad to allow uninterrupted street traffic and train traffic.

If you are like me, and appreciate history in every form, these bridges are a must see. And don't just drive under them...get out and take a closer look. There are so may places in our country where this type of thing has been torn down and replaced with ugly concrete. These are beautiful!

These bridges were built by the Illinois Central Railroad to cross the Rock River. Once the longest rail line in the USA

These arches date back to when the railroad first went through Dixon in 1855. I have never walked on top of them, but have heard there is a walking path.
