Park can be hilly and trails are marked.
Wildlife Viewing - over 1 mile and has some ups and downs
Forest Ridge - did from Aspen Ridge Picnic area, should have gone to Valley View Picnic area. Some ups and down, some sections are in meadow, good 1 mile trail
River Bluff - 0.50 miles, had 1 view pond

The climb to the Castle Rock lookout was fairly easy. I arrived later than expected and missed sunrise, but the view was still pretty good. I hiked all the trails in the park too. There are a number of good long stretches of uphill that keeps the heart rate up. I’m almost 70 years old, but I have hiked over 10+ miles dozens of times this summer alone. I recommend this park for anyone looking for something a little more challenging. It’s not like hiking the Grand Canyon, but it is closer to home.

Loved this park. We did the North Trails...took a few hours but paths were clean and clearly marked.

Took my two daughters to Castle Rock State Park while we were staying a few days in the local area. We visited on a weekday afternoon, so the park was fairly quiet and without many other visitors at that time. The Park has plenty of parking spot available as well as various locations to visit. There are various trails that you can walk, which were moderately easy to walk. There were also restrooms available and even a few play areas for kids.
The main reason for our stop, however, was to enjoy the scenic overlook of the nearby Rock River. Important to note that this overlook is not at the main park but rather a mile or so southwest of the park’s main entrance. Plenty of parking available there as well. There are multiple stairs to climb to each of the platforms, but the stairways are well built and easy to traverse. Well worth the time and effort to see the views of the river and the forested shores around it.

After spending a couple hours down the road at White Pines Forest SP, I didn't have a whole lot of time to check out much of the park. I did want to check out the overlook though.
It was much more elaborate than I was expecting. There's lots of stairs to climb to get up to the two platforms. I had the place to myself on a Monday in May. I took my time and checked out all the views and took a bunch of pictures. It was May, so the trees were green. I can only imagine what that view looks like in the fall.
It is definitely worth a stop if you have 30 minutes to check it out.

Nice park with shadow and not much crowds (if you arrive early enough, even during weekend). Portable clean restroom with hand sanitizer, few trash cans, tables and grills.
A lot of fisherman (some are lucky, but we're not), kayakers and tube riders.
Round trip up and down all stairs around overlook takes about 10 minutes and I saw 2 women running this circle about 15 times without stop. So, it's a great opportunity to improve your physical feeling.
Animals, birds, insects (no mosquitoes!), fresh river breeze.
We like it, but so far from home (2 hrs driving).

Elaborate boardwalk takes you to a stunning view of the Rock River amongst rock configurations. It’s a strenuous walk up but well worth it. Good bathrooms and parking.

The picture of the Rock River Scenic Overlook in Castle Rock State Park is not in the main entrance to the State Park. The location is not very clear on the Illinois State Park website, but fortunately we researched the reviews on Trip Advisor and found the Outlook without any frustration. This beautiful and stunning Overlook to the Rock River and surrounding forests is about a mile southwest of the main entrance on Route 2 as the road weaves through some canyons.
Although the overlook entrance could be easily passed by, the parking is great and the short path and 139 steps to the top of the rock are well built. Even as seniors, a leisurely climb to the top was doable and well-worth the wintry brisk weather for the stunning view. We are certainly going to return for the scenery a few times again yet during the Spring and the Autumn!

This "newer" state park has fishing and hiking trails of which we have not done. We took a short visit and climbed the stairs to the top of the rocks overlooking the Rock River. The view is fantastic.

Easy boat launch with pier at the Rock River Castle Rock State Park. About a mile down there is a campground for boat in only, and it's very shaded with large trees. Recommended!

Are boats provided to get to the camp ground?

is there a fee to enter/park? i didn't see anything on their site. also, if we're mostly interested in taking the boardwalk/steps to the overlook, i take it it's the "scenic overlook" on the map? someone posted that it's not easy to find...thanks!

There is no fee. Free parking that’s super easy to find. And the stairs are super obvious. No way to get lost. It’s beautiful up there.

someone posted a question about the indian statue - isn't that in a separate state park (lowden)??

Can someone tell me their experience with camping? I am looking to come here on motorcycle and need to know if I need my own canoe or can I rent one?

I would recommend going camping at Lowden State Park, which is only a 1/4 mile away from town. It's a nice campground, with a concession, cabins, showers, and a walking distance to see the new Blackhawk Statue. You would only need a camping tent, sleeping bag, creature comforts etc. You would have to rent a kayak or canoe and I would recommend these two sources that have a lot of options at reasonable rates. I hope this helps you out.

My logic would tell me you cannot because the undercurrent would be to fast and too dangerous. It does sound like it would be a fun activity you would have to petition for. I would recommend calling Castle Rock State Park. Phone number is 1-815-732-7329.

Is there any way to get a wheelchair up to see the view?
Escrita el 11 de abril de 2017
I should have added - there is a great view of the river from the parking lot, which is just a few yards away from the river. There is also a great view of the river from a parking lot less than 1/2 mile north (still park of Castle Rock State Park) - there is a boating entrance to the river from that larger parking lot. Usually Canadian geese & ducks hanging around to watch.

Can you see the highlights of this state park and Lowden within 2-3 hours?
