Another unplanned and unexpected gem! While we visited Crawfordsville eight years ago we had not heard of this museum. As a matter of fact we had never heard of a rotary jail before so we had to satisfy our curiosity.
The jail is an architectural and engineering marvel and is still operational. The adjoining sheriff’s residence is beautifully designed and appointed and rivals many other homes of privilege.
Our guide was passionate about this site as well as her employment there. She was articulate and well versed on the jail’s history.

Very interesting step back in time to when the sheriff lived at the jail. Interesting mechanism that is the rotating cells. Small town jail used into the 1970’s is very believable. Including the story of the town drunk.

Most interesting museum we've ever been in! We've traveled the US and several countries and I must say, this is the one that we stumbled on that will forever be remembered! Who knew a rotary jail was a thing? Not us!
The guided tour takes you through the sheriff's residence which has several original furnishings and household items. There's plenty of history to read on the walls and other time period items to learn about but the main attraction is of course the jail! Our tour guide was a bit odd and he was pretty short in his stories and explanations but the gal that toured the jail and basement was perfect! She explained everything in detail and embellished with some tales of the jail!
The jail rotates! Literally spins around with one door in and one door out! Well, that was the way it was built originally and operated until 1933, then they said no more rotating, too many prisoner injuries! It still rotates though, the only one in existence so definitely a must see!

Great visit to a piece of Indiana history. Brittany did a great job giving us a tour and telling us about the jail. It was worth our drive from Indianapolis. We recommend it!

Very interesting and unique experience. Totally exceeded expectations. I believe it’s the only functioning rotary jail in the US. Tour guides really know their history. Our tour guide’s father was the former sheriff. He spent a lot of time there as a kid and told stories from his personal experience. You also get to stand in the jail while they rotate it which is so cool. Highly recommend especially at only $5 for adults and $3 for kids.

Good tour of unique jail design. Demonstration of how the rotary jail works makes it a worthwhile stop. Wear a coat in the winter. No heat in the jail!

What everyone has mentioned before still holds true so I won't repeat.
Piece of advice -- if you use the bathroom don't wash your hands in the sink, just use antibacterial hand sanitizer already there, next to the antibacterial hand soap. If you turn on the water, the sulfur smell is overpowering. I wish I had been warned.

We had some time to kill so we took the short trip from our hotel to the Rotary Jail. Not what we were expecting. The engineering on this jail are amazing. Hard to believe it remained open after prisoners lost limbs and one his life. The gentleman giving the tour was very knowledgeable and had lots of stories. The $5 fee for the tour was very affordable. We got to see all the parts of the jail and even see it rotating! Great tour!

Hundred year old, 30 ton mechanical marvel still operable today (by hand-turned crank!) This is such a unique attraction - one of only 18 ever built, and the only one still working. Amazing that this small town popped for this contraption, primarily used for drunk locals. Great insights from the host, and the volunteer who once played here as a child. You get to explore the entire jail and even see it in operation. What a safety hazard it was! I recommend this offbeat attraction to see a glimpse of law enforcement in the past.

What is the cost to rent the tannenbaum museum and yard area for a wedding reception?
Escrita el 20 de octubre de 2019
I don't know the cost but the Visitor's Bureau might. They could at least put you in touch with the proper person

Is the museum handicapped accessible?
Escrita el 12 de octubre de 2018
I believe there was a wheelchair ramp in the back that enters through the gift shop. You would be able to see most of the museum and the main floor. The docent lets you explore the upper and lower levels, although this portion is mostly self led. It is worth it to go I would say.
