Visited Key monsatery in July 2019 duirng the bike ride to Spiti valley.. From Kaza, we planned a day for sightseeing to Kibber, Langza and Key Monsatery + Komic and Hikkim... all of these can be easily done in a day..
Key monsatery provides a very good view of the river and snow capped peaks in the background.. we were fortunate that the monks there let us go inside the dark caves meant for meditation; that was like a complete different feeling, to imagine monks sitting there in peace for hours and probably days/ months.

With renovation underway and the modern elevation, it is hard to believe that the Kye monastery is more than 1000 years old. A large number of Buddhist monks, nuns and lamas live here. We were greeted by one of the lamas, who took us around the monastery and explained us about the idols and ideals. He also made us tea with the special herbs found there. It was refreshing and warmed us from inside. There are cave like rooms facing the mountains, where you can spend some time meditating. This place is a house to a large number of Buddhist scriptures.

It was established in the 11th century and it still houses ancient It has been looted by Mongols, destroyed by fire and earthquake by never lost its eternal charm. Buddhist scrolls and paintings. It also houses unique wind instruments and important manuscripts. A large number of Buddhist monks, nuns, and lamas live in this religious training center to receive their religious education here. This is another monastery by Tibetan Buddhist settlers in India. Like Tiger's Nest Monastery in Bhutan this one is also at high mountain. However the climb is just a few hundred steps and easily possible for all.

Key Monastery is a beautiful Tibetan Buddhist monastery situated right on top of hill at an altitude of 13,500 ft. The monastery has some really beautiful scriptures & paintings of Lord Buddha and other Gods. The Key gompa is also famous for its priceless collection of ancient thangkas including Tibetan silk thangkas upto 800 years old and frescoes depicting the life of Padmasambhaba. Key village comes just before the key monastery.

I had a wonderful time at this spot, watching the remaining light of the sun fade and being replaced by the rising moon behind me.
There is not much vegetation in this dry valley, so wherever it is it gives such beautiful colors of autumn to the otherwise dry and barren landscape, and I was here at the peak of colors which can be seen throughout this vista.
As I sat here some locals were walking uphill back to their homes, but apart from that it was no sound. With the sun down the air got cold fast – it is after all almost 4000 meters above the sea here.
The location of the gompa is so beautiful and those living there have incredible views of the landscape as do those viewing onto the gompa. This place is beautiful every day of the year, but life here is governed by an alpine climate, which is touch at this altitude, with very cold winters and isolation from the outside world.
This monastery, or gompa, has, like most monasteries, a name with many spelling variations to the spoken name of which Kee and Key are the most common in addition to Ki.

The Kye Monastery is a picturesque Tibetan Buddhist Monastery located on a hilltop in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. The spectacular monastery is located at an elevation of 4166 meters above sea level. Surrounded by snow capped mountains and glaciers,it seems like Key monastery is the crown jewel to the entire Himachal. The route to the monastery is equally breathtaking.

The place provides a lovely scape for landscape photographers. Said to be about 800 year old. Also runs a small school for young monks. Nice old structure. Friendly monks offering you a good tea.
