Read all the review on this and thought we need to see it. So disappointed on this. You have to park at the bottom of the hill. Walk 1/4 mile up a very steep hill! To find only three cabins with no signs about the site. Would love to have read about the Fort and all the history. Did not make it to cemetery. So disappointed ☹️
It not worth climbing that Steep hill!

This is still one of the best preserved Civil War forts in the country. There is a beautiful view of neighboring West Point, Kentucky from the top of the hill on the fort. Commissioned by William T.Sherman this fort protected the Louisville area from possible Confederate attacks. Fortunately there were no attacks in the area, however, most the soldiers who died here victims of disease. That being said there haven’t been any Civil War events in the last few years since Covid, The other thing is the road up to the fort has been closed to vehicular traffic and is an 1/4 mile uphill climb and poses a difficulty for those who have mobility issues.

This is undoubtedly the best preserved earthen Civil War fort in Kentucky. Built in 1861 by orders of William T. Sherman it was used to guard against attack from the Confederacy. Although no battles were fought here there is one soldier listed as killed by a sniper. The others were felled by disease. Once you get to the top there’s a nice view of the Ohio River and West Point, Kentucky. Unfortunately events have been postponed due to the Covid pandemic a couple of years ago. Hopefully they will resume activities at some point in the future. For those with mobility issues the road to the top is closed do you have to walk 1/4 mile uphill to the fort. The road comes to a T with the fort on the right and the memorial cemetery up another hill to the left. Although there are markers at the cemetery the bodies have been removed long ago I was told. Yet the director of the West Point Historical Museum contends that there are bodies buried up there that are unmarked. So there’s that. After walking uphill 1/4 mile to the fort I decided not to visit the memorial cemetery. I had been there years ago. 30 minutes tops should be enough time to visit the old fort.

we visited Fort Duffield after passing the sign on 31W many times. I had called the commerce dept to ask about and they had someone meet us there and give a tour. It was great. This old Civil War fort never fired a shot. It was here to protect the approach to Louisville from Nashville. All or most of the deaths here were from disease. There are many earthworks still present and there are recreations of other things. The grave site for all who died was located and the remains disinterred and returned to the home state.

The good news is that this Civil War fort built by Wm. T. Sherman is one of the best preserved earthen forts in existence. The not so good news is that the small road that goes up to the fort and the cemetery is chained off. That means it’s a 1/4 mile uphill walk on the road or an uphill walk up a dirt path near the parking lot. The pandemic has also caused all functions and events to be cancelled this year. Once up there it’s very peaceful with a commanding view of the Ohio River and the small town of West Point. A walk to the left of the fort takes you to the small cemetery we’re some of the members of the 9th Michigan are buried. There were no battles fought there as these poor souls died of diseases and never made it back home. Hopefully when the virus threat passes there will be future events to enjoy.

This small for is off the beaten path but fairly preserved. It is quite the hike to the top but does have lots to offer in the form of signage, a walking trail map with that highlights specific areas, replica cabins, and a generally peaceful walking trail.

The site is pretty out of the way. When you park you have the option of walking up the paved road or hiking through the woods. There are also numerous biking trails that go though the park. Once you make the walk to the top, there are some nice views of the Salt and Ohio rivers. It is a pretty impressive set of earthworks. There also a few buildings in place to help you visualize how it was set up. On the adjacent hill there is a small national cemetery for those who died while at the fort. Although it didn't see any action, several Soldiers died of numerous diseases. If you are into history, you will definitely enjoy the site. If you just go for the fort, expect to be able to see it all in about an hour or so.

The 1/4 mile, 300 foot uphill walk turned out to be one of hardest walks I have done. We took the paved road but there is also a trail through the woods if you prefer that. Sun was getting ready to set so we thought the paved road would be faster.

It is a steep grade and when I finally sat down on a bench at the top of the road my legs were shaking from fatigue. Then I noticed there was another steep walking trail to get to the fort and another steep path on the other side to get to the graveyard. Coming back down the grade was so steep in some areas we were actually leaning backwards go down (we had to lean forward in some places going up).

I'm still not sure if it was worth the walk to see an earthen fort but it was interesting and the signs give you a good history of the fort. If you are a real Civil War buff I'm sure you will not let the walk up deter you. My husband is the Civil War buff in this family, me not so much. If I had known just what the walk was like I probably would have waited in the car. Be sure to check their website for their special events.

THis is a hidden spot in West Point. take your time walking uphill is a half mile and only walking no vehicles. the view is awesome once you reach the top. a stragtic military spot. ALso a cemetery of the fallen heroes. I have been there when it was sunny and also when it was foggy. there is a serene feeling when you reach the top and just admire the Fort Duffield.
if you want to see a reactment Memorial Day weekend is the only time they do this. they dress in costumes just like the old days.

I stumbled across Fort Duffield Park by accident. The exit on the 60 is easy to miss. I had to turn around and try again.
During my visit, on a Wednesday in October, I encountered nobody so had plenty of time to walk around and enjoy the fort and the view over the Ohio river. The information provided on the leaflet and signs is excellent and paints an interesting picture of this piece of US history.
