Had to come here, mostly for the history but partly for the song. Had to see the place where in 1814, Jackson and his men took a little trip to.

Went in the morning, just a short, easy drive from the French Quarter. Not many people there and lots of parking available. Lots of plaques around the perimeter of the battlefield to help explain and give a better feel for the battle. There's a Visitors Center there as well with a Ranger or two to answer questions, washrooms and a bit of a picnic area too. Make sure to take the path to the Plantation, it takes you down to the Mississippi River. There are also some stairs that are worth climbing to get a great view of both battlefield and the River.

Overall a great place to visit if you enjoy history.

very important place for the history of New Orleans and for America in general. Unfortunately there is nothing left to see except the monument and the small museum attached.
The visit is very short (1 room) and there are 2 short projections that summarize the phases of the conflict on the American and English sides. Perhaps a little too synthetic if you don't have specific training on the subject. I recommend visiting it for history buffs, but I also suggest reading up first, because the two screenings are not exhaustive.

Not too far from the French Quarter area of NOLA is this small battlefield that played a very important role in the War of 1812. On the day we went there was a park ranger who could answer questions. There are placards throughout where you can read history on your own.
Definitely an important part of that war… Highly recommend taking an hour out of your day to come, observe and pay homage to those who fought for our great country!

We visited Chalmette Battlefield while approaching New Orleans. Parking is easy and the monument is impressive. The small Visitor’s Center and the helpful staff assist in understanding the Battle. We drove the path to appreciate the lay of the land. It is obviously a favorite walking path. One wanting a deep understanding of the combat of January 8, 1815 could spend hours there but a quick stop helped us understand the victory of Gen. Andrew Jackson and his men. Definitely worth a stop.

Years ago, I read accounts of the battle on this site. It took many more years to get to view it. The battle field seems so large and flat, and the bulwarks of the defenders so small...and the river so near. One can imagine the redcoats standing and marching in formation...to be picked off easily. The visitor's center is excellent! Short movies depicting the battle and other information. Somehow, the defenders in short order build bulwarks 13 or so feet thick to stop the British cannon balls. Just imagine the many languages being spoken while the defenders prepared for battle! The Chalmette plantation house that stood there during the battle, was replaced by a subsequent owner's plantation home -still standing. During the battle, the Chalmette plantation house was mined with explosives so the British would not be able to use it. The poor owner died a month later from stress due to the loss of his home. He fought in the battle, and witnessed the devastation of his home. You can also climb the steps to the levee and watch barges coming and going on the river. Plenty of shade and tables for a picnic. Clean restrooms.

Very informative to walk the grounds. Many signs and Plaques with histories if each section of the Battle lines.
Colonel Jackson devised a masterful plan--
Cutting the Sugar Cane and leaving the stubs in the open field approach.
Digging out the Old Mill canal and filling with water. Using the dirt to fortify the firing wall. And, positioning his best shooting units at positions to create a harrowing crossfire.

To quote the great song--

"In 1814 we took a little trip, along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississiipp.' We took a little bacon and we took a little beans, to fight the Bloody British in the town of New Orleans.

We fired our guns and the British kept a comin,' wasn't quite as many as there was awhile ago. We fired once more and they began a runnin,' down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!"

We enjoyed the Chalmette Battlefield and Cemetery. The visitor center shows a very interesting video on the battle of New Orleans that does a great job in capturing the importance of this battle. We picked up the stamp and token for the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park. This is a great place to spend half an afternoon – Highly recommend!

The visitor center here presents detailed information
about the significance of this site. There is also a
monument that looks like a small version of the Washington
Monument. The battlefield has cannons on display and a
loop for walking or driving around the perimeter.
There is also a plantation house on the grounds.

We took the paddle boat down to the site. The mansion on site stands stark in the middle of a field. We walked over to the monument and looked at the cannons on-site. It was a fun trip.
