Most enjoyable ride. We did it in 4-days from Cumberland, MD to Pittsburgh, PA. First day climb to the Eastern Continental Divide was exhausting, but after that the 3-days "downhill" were doable. This is a trail that can be done with a regular bike and old-fashioned peddling. The bulk of the trail is packed, crush rock...but a few sections are just packed dirt and get very muddy and difficult to pebble if you have any rain. The historical markers along the route make for a "break" from riding and actually teach you something. Highly recommend.

So impressed how well maintained this trail was. All 150 miles I rode no major pot holes, garbage , etc. Also good signage and mile markers. Even when going through towns where the trail seemed to cutoff it was easy to follow- no pulling over and guessing. Same goes for all the tunnels - well maintained. The Big Savage Tunnel (my favorite) while dark, long and the motion sensor lighting was a bit delayed it was also clean and well maintained. No sudden bumps or random debris. Plenty of water and bathrooms along the trail. Ohiopyle was a great stop to spend the night. I stayed at the Ohiopyle Suites (right off the path) and dined at the Falls City Restaurant and Pub. Had good food and a well deserved cold beer. You can walk anywhere in this small inviting town.
Used my road bike with 25” gravel tires and I was fine. Also as a female traveling solo I left safe.
Really found it a lovely trail and overall trip.

I have ridden the GAP many times. I enjoy the well packed and maintained trail. During the summer of 2023 there is some construction at the beginning in Cumberland but very passable,
The people, along the trail are very friendly and a lost of services every 15 to 20 miles.
Great scenery and fun places to stop

The GAP trail runs the route of the old Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad. There are numerous access points for a short walk with your dogs or bicycle on the trail. This reviews for Sutersville access point. All level and plenty of free parking.

This is a well-packed trail and a GREAT ride. Our group of six (ages 60 to 70) rode from Pittsburgh to Cumberland in 4 days. Day 1 was 60 miles and then 30 miles each of the following days so we had plenty of time to visit Falling Waters (don't forget to make a reservation far in advance), Ohiopyle State Park. The 30 miles from Meyersdale is a downhill blast and very scenic.
Our group rode the C&O trail last year and liked that too. GAP is a much smoother ride.

If you regularly cycle 15-20 miles at a stretch, and are used to gravel, you may enjoy this trail. I am a fit senior, not overweight, and exercise regularly — and I was miserable. I ride an e-bike for recreation, going maybe 10-12 miles on the average, and the 11 miles of trail I completed out of Cumberland, toward Frostburg, were no fun at all. The weather — cool and cloudy for the most part — didn’t help. I never warmed up, had to wear a jacket. The sun did come out on the way back, but then there were headwinds. Brr.
The trail itself is nominally paved, but there is rough, tough gravel everywhere, requiring much more effort. I wasn’t used to it. Quite the slog.
The e-bike I rented from Wheelzup in Cumberland wasn’t very powerful. I have ridden 30 miles on an e-bike (in Colorado, no less) and loved it — but this rental Trek was another story altogether. At home I have a Specialized e-bike, which has a lot more zip. I stuck mostly to levels 3 and 4 on the Trek (Tour and Sport modes), but the going was still too strenuous for my tastes. Raising the level to 5 (Turbo) made almost no difference in terms of both speed and effort. Disappointing for a Trek product,
Scenery is generic East Coast. Mostly walled in by trees, the same five species you see everywhere from Connecticut to North Carolina, from Cape Cod to the Mississippi. A few times greater vistas opened up, but these were just farms and hills. Nothing special.
Lots of people on the trail. If you like solitude, this trail is not for you.
Bottom line: much harder than they say it is. Not paved. Not dirt, but not pavement as one would generally understand it. Nothing to look at. I wouldn’t go out of my way to ride this trail. YMMV.

My wifr and I recently rode the GAP roughly between the Pinkerton bridges/tunnel in PA and Frostburg MD. The trail is hard-packed, fine gravel easily acceptable for 28 to 32 mm road bike tires or wider. There are several mountain vistas, as well as scenic bridges/viaducts over rivers, streams, and roads. We loved it.

My wife and I bike all over the world and the GAPCO trail which is a combo of the Great Alleghaney Passage and the C&O canal is incredible. We took the train to Pittsburg spent the night and then road about 40 miles each day along the Great Allegheny Passage spending the night in incredible hotels or B&B and having great meals. In Cumberland you pickup the C&O canal and it is amazing going all the way to Washington . So you can the train from Washington to Pittsburg and ride all the way back and it is totally safe and great hotels & B&B along the way

I walked/jogged/hiked 15 miles on the GAP out of Cumberland. Easy grading & well-maintained paths made it very enjoyable!

October is the best time of year to do the GAP. The colours are stupendous/vibrant/on fire, and the deer abound. You can meditate as you pedal as there are few other bikers and only an occasional hiker. What a treat!
