We did the day sail on the Friends Good Will, and it was amazing! Kids (7&12) loved it, but the adults were equally as entertained. It was 90 minutes and we got to watch the crew put up/take down the sails, which was very interesting and fun to watch. The ship itself is a replica of an old cargo ship, and you get to hear about its history before boarding. The crew was fun and very interactive. The captain showed the kids how he drives the ship and let them steer for a bit. We also got to check out the area below the deck. This was by far a highlight of our vacation. We would love to come back!

A family adventure on Lake Michigan! We had a fun time on the 1812 replica warship Friends Good Will. The crew dressed the part and shared history details during the excursion. A fun thing to do with children, teens and young adults.

We went on the 1:30 day sail on a Sunday afternoon on the Friends Good Will. My daughter being a typical 15 year old wasn't thrilled about it, thinking it would be boring, but ended up loving it! All 3 of us were ale to steer the ship which was equally exciting for each of us. The tour of below deck was interesting, as was watching the crew work on raising and lowering the sails and getting us safely docked. Something to note, they mention it but not everyone pays attention when it's said... This is a WORKING SAILBOAT. Which means the men and women working and volunteering must move about the ship working, and therefore if your children are not well behaved and you can't keep them from areas restricted during such times, this may not be the best activity for you. Otherwise we had a wonderful sail! The museum is small but full of info, and the tug boat was very neat to get on and tour.

We just did the pirate tour for the second time (first was 3 years ago). It is not worth the price. We loved it the first time but so much was changed and can hardly be called a pirate adventure at this point. We recaptured our treasure before we ever left the harbor and that was the end of the pirate part. My kids were asking so what do we do now? It was a nice boat ride and kind staff but definitely lacking in the pirate adventure part. We won't be returning.

Museum wasn’t much. Posters to see, etc. not too many “artifacts” to see. Catching a ride on one of the boats made the trip better and relaxing. We rode the Lindy Lu. Well recommended.

We spent nearly all day at the museum and went for rides on all four boat excursions and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We went on a covered river launch boat ride up the river to the Kal-Haven trail covered bridge. It was very peaceful and relaxing and looked like a great trail to hike. It reminded me of the jungle cruise ride at Disney. We had an exciting ride on the coast guard motor lifeboat bouncing in the waves. It was a little bit cramped. I think it would be better if they only sold 4 tickets for that boat instead of 6. The sailboat was very interesting and exciting. It was very educational, watching them raise and lower the sails and learning the history of the ship from the costumed crew. Chauffeured cadet ride was a treat. It reminded me of something the you would see the Kennedy's riding around in back in the day. We drove through the different marina's and enjoyed reading the interesting names of all the boats. We had such an enjoyable day, I just wish all the rides could have been a little bit longer. You can just look over the boats when they are at the dock, but I highly recommend riding all of them. I would also recommend visiting at the beginning or end of the season. I can't imagine how crowded this harbor area would be in the middle of the summer, especially on weekends. There would be SO much traffic congestion, I would imagine it would be difficult to navigate the marina.
The main museum was a little disappointing. I expected a little more interesting exhibits than what they had. The coast guard buildings were very interesting and contained 3 ships and exhibits about rescues. I have previously seen similar examples around the Great Lakes and New England, very educational. Also had a boat workshop and an outboard motor collection.
It would be a nice touch if they could set up a small theater area in one of the buildings where you could sit down and watch the video of " The Finest Hours", since the motor lifeboat was used in it's filming.

Had a great time at the museum. Reasonable price to get in for what you get to see. Staff are extremely friendly. Finest Hours was a great movie and they have the coast guard boat on loan there so we can see it. Only need a couple hours to see all they have to share but worth the visit.

We will be in town next week & I was wondering would it be better to do the regular daytime tour or the Pirate Chasing tour? We will have 9 kids with us ranging from 5-17 years old.

Hi Judy,
With children, we always recommend the pirate chaser sail. Kids of all ages really get a kick out of defending the ship from pirates!
Is it true there is nowhere to sit on the friends Goodwill sailboat? In reading the reviews it seems like there is not. We will be visiting shortly and I was interested in getting tickets. It worries me that there's nowhere to sit. Thank you very much!

There's a storage chest, box, step, that type of item which 1 person can sit on.28 people on ship and most are standing. There's room for 2 on a bench up by the captain they seem to save for those getting sick.
Are there any clothing optional beaches near here?

Hi Sandra,
There is limited parking at the Museum. The parking alongside & in front of the building are city lots. Please call ahead if you plan on bringing a bus, so that we can make arrangements. The Museum would also like a heads up as to how many visitors would be coming. 269-637-8078.
Thank you!
