i went to grand mere national park in july 2024 with 2 friends. we were travelling back from saugatuck to chicago and stopped here on the way. little did i know it would be the most traumatising experience of my life. the walk from the car park to the actual sand dunes and lake took about 45 minutes, and the path was completley flooded, so we had to walk through the forest/trees. my friend was bitten 50 times by bugs and i was bitten 30. when we got to the lake it was nice but the walk back was even worse having it being rainy, there were more bugs. my friend had so many mosquitoe bites she was close to using her epi pen. guys, i wouldnt reccomend, there were no staff and i felt like i could have died.

Wanted to stop to check out the park and see what kind of view of the beach existed. There was a bit of an adventure element and it was over a mile hike and a pretty steep Dune to get to the overlook but I’d say it’s worth a stop.

My friends, this is a beautiful park. If it was my wife and I, we might have enjoyed it more. But you should know not to take young teens or kids who are not used to physical exertion when they are expecting a day at the beach and dunes. I should have read more of these reviews before we went but I think the Michigan website should give more information (especially about the hike to Lake Michigan). We wanted a break from the crowds but this was the wrong choice with our kid. The hike to the beach is long (and today it was hot) and full of bugs and plants that grab you from the side of the path. We did not know there were only two nasty pit outhouses in the park. Just do some research and make sure it's right for you. It IS a beautiful park.

I wanted to see a Great Lake before I left Michigan and I heard good reviews. I don't mind hiking to get to Lake Michigan. The dunes were a challenge, but we managed to climb them. The downside is there were outhouses, so I suggest you go before you get there. We opened the doors and the smell could not you over and there were flies and mosquitoes flying out of the toilet and for a woman I was not going to use it, but my sons did a quick run in and out. The trail was full of bugs that were hitting our face and flying in-between my glasses and I wished I had packed my head net. Along the trail there was a log(poop and it looked like it was from a human) disgusting. The lake was beautiful and quiet, but I would not go to this park again. The walk through the dunes is about an hour or so, so bring plenty of water. You need a park pass.

We were looking for some peace and quiet and this place delivered. The path is paved until the dune climb. It's challenging but manageable at that point. The path dropped off into the water because of erosion so getting to the beach further down was a bit of a challenge. We wound up walking for about 2 hours and only saw a handful of people. Great beach for rock hunting. The only downside is there are only outhouses.

Be forewarned, the walk to this beach is not for the faint of heart. It is about a mile through dunes. However the beach is beautiful, not crowded and worth the trip.

First off I could not hold my laughter about the negative reviews complaining for the hike to the beach, its only a mile or 2 and honestly it helps filter out much of the crowd who ruins the day for others.

Second, just know what you are going to, a state park mainly for Michiganders with NO ADMISSION (you do need a parks and rec pass that you get with your vehicle registration) that has actual hiking trails, nature, and limited construction and limited paved paths. If you want to park next to the beach, use a sidewalk and then go order your pizza and ice cream at a snack stand well then you better go elsewhere there are plenty of options. If you want to burn some calories, get some fresh air, and like myself walk your dog its perfect! there should be more options like this!

Pros: Variety of trails
Long beach walk
Allows pets
Beautiful scenery
Small inland lakes
No entrance Fee (this is why there is minimal upkeep and no one cleaning the beach daily)
Not as many tourists or Karens as the other parks/beaches
Amazing Sunset views

Cons: Some trails do get flooded after the rain (take a different one)
Bathrooms & trash cans only at the entrance, just come prepared
Inconsiderate visitors do litter on the beach since there is no park supervision

It may seem odd to some that there are 2 state parks right down the road from each other along the coast of Lake Michigan. Warren Dunes is just south of Grand Mere. While Warren Dunes is beach goer friendly with a huge parking area right next to the beach , with concessions, bathrooms, changing areas, and all sorts of activities, Grand Mere is the complete opposite, which is why I like it so much better. Go to Warren for a day at the beach. Come to Grand Mere to be in nature.

Grand Mere proper has a small, dirt parking area at the trail head. There are 2 pit toilets at the parking area, go now or go in the woods. There is a information board up, but it did not have much info. The park map distribution stand was empty. It would be a good time to download the park map onto your phone if you are not sure where you are going. There is a fine cell signal (for me anyway) so following an app like Google Maps worked too.

The walk to the lake shore was beautiful and the fall colors were peaking. It was a mostly cloudy day, but when the sun came out, the trees really popped. I followed the paved path the the base of the dune (lots of sand) and turned right to climb up, It wasn't bad. The path winds along the dunes (sand and tall grasses) to the lake. You can start hearing the waves as you get closer. Once at the lake, I headed south about a half mile of so. It was very calm and really beautiful. There was only a few people around on a Thursday in October. No wind and 70 degrees made for a perfect afternoon hike around the lake.

After my usual photos, I headed back to the car. There were a few off-shots along the main trail, but I didn't go far down them. I just sort of checked them out and took a few pictures. The weather has been pretty cool, especially at night, so the bug population was low, except for lady bugs. I seemed to have walked through a large amount of them and had 20-25 land on my at different times. Not a bin deal. It was a very good day. Trail signage could be vastly improved.

Our first time out, just looking for the water...the parking area was pretty full and there were 2 paths, not marked that I could see. We picked the path to the left and it was longer then expected, pretty narrow in areas and turned into dunes, quite steep in spots. We are in pretty good shape and only carrying a small bag and had to stop a few times to catch our breath. I felt bad for those hauling coolers and kids!!! The beach area was quite narrow but nice.

I have read other reviews and I am thinking if you want a way to see dunes and the lake, this could be the path you follow. We were looking for for a hiking experience and it came up short. The park is not staffed, so there are no brochures available. The rest rooms were less than desirable. The hiking path had low spots where mud accumulates. And there are no markers along the path to guide one to the dunes or the lake. The good news is there is no charge for admission.
