Found this gem of a place to spend part of a day outside in February for my husband and me. The interpretive center buildings were closed due to COVID, but the trails are open for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

We were greeted warmly by Neal, a staff member, who gave us maps and filled us in on the center. He also offered a tour of the solar energy system.

We hiked to the bog and along Big Deep Lake and Bass Pond, which took about an hour. This was a leisurely hike and we enjoyed the board walk over the bog and sat on a bench overlooking Bass Pond. The birch and aspens along the trail were beautiful. The map we had and strategically placed trail maps kept us easily guided.

After hiking, we had a nice picnic outside the interpretive buildings. A center volunteer stopped by and told us more about the wood gasification heating used and the solar system. The center is carbon neutral.

I’d highly recommend this place for a part or full day experience outside. We spent about 2 1/2 hours there, but there was more hiking we could have done. There is no fee for hiking, etc, but we donated on their website.

Wife and I stopped here today. We had a grand adventure walking around Bass pond; it was definitely the less traveled path, but worth every step. There are some paved trails, all worth a look. I think stopping here will be an annual tradition for us from now on.

We love hiking in the woods, and it is so nice to find that there is a nature preserve so close to our lake home. We were at the center on an off day, Saturday, so it was quiet, but we were told about how the facilities can fill up. We will hope to go back and do more hiking, soon. Since it such a quiet time, we got the back stage tour of the solar and wood burning miracles engineered by their retired lawyer Jim.

As a hiker and chaperone for middle school students, I have found Deep Portage and its staff to be a great experience. Staff are very knowledgeable. Educational programs are meaningful and help build a sense of collaboration/comaraderie. The students especially liked the climbing wall and the observation tower. The opportunity to paddle and do a short portage were a good exercise in communication and partnership. Groomed hiking trails, some of which accomodated special mobility needs. The only drawback was having to lodge students in different parts of the building, which created a chaperoning challenge.

Bring your hiking shoes or cross country skis and enjoy the many trails throughout almost 7000 acres of wilderness. The observation tower is worth the climb for a wonderful view of the surrounding terrain. The center has many educational exhibits.

Have been up here a few times, and it's always enjoyable... even just the drive up to the main headquarters. There is an interpretive center that gives visitors a good idea f what the center provides, wildlife around etc. The main buiding also has some interesting displays.

Main purpose is well-served: to introduce young people to the woods -- teaching them to recognize and value our natural environment, find mushrooms, learn archery, canoeing and other outdoor skills, etc. Thre is a dorm and cafeteria that serves the gourps during their stays -- some overnights but many 3 days toa week long.

The facility also hosts classes for adults on hunting, cross-country skiing, and much more. Visiti he website for addtional details, and plan to visit whenever you get the chance!
