The river is beautiful for biking on the trail, walking, kayaking or tubing. The water was low due to the lack of rain so kayakers might have to step out and walk in a few spots.

Great biking along the Root River Trail that passes through the quaint town of Lanesboro. The trail runs 40 miles from Houston to Fountain. The most scenic and enjoyable stretch of the trail is between Peterson and Lanesboro. The best stops along the way are Whalen and Lanesboro. Several good places to grab food or a drink in Lanesboro.

Must see! This town has so much charm and character. We will be back and would love to stay in one of their many charming bed and breakfasts!

Gone are the good old days when the Root River was a lazy tube filled with relaxation and fun. Unfortunately, the river has changed and not for the better. The DNR lacks interest in removing dangerous debris. This year, alone, there have been dozens of injuries due to uprooted trees laying in the river, causing dangerous undertows and obstacles. At some points, trees that have been downed from various storms still lay almost completely across the river with little to no room to navigate through - and taking bodily harm risks if you do. I feel for towns like Lanesboro that bank on water activity for tourism. With the amount of severe injuries the last few years and currently, especially to children, I see the future of tubing, kayaking and canoeing the Root all but disappearing. Some area towns have already closed their outfitters as it is no longer a relatively safe activity in their area. Having griwn up on this river, it is sad to see. Do NOT recommend water activity on the Root any longer, sadly.

Scary canoe trip. Do not recommend for families with kids. Cute town and rental places look nice but river can be very dangerous.

We rode our bikes on the Root River Trail from Lanesboro to Preston and back. It is a beautiful stretch of trail passing rocky ledges and open fields of wildflowers. It is pretty popular so a weekday is probably better than a weekend on a beautiful summer day. This is a rail trail so the slopes are very mild at least on this stretch and it is paved so it is quite smooth. This is one of the prettiest rides I have taken on a long time. There is parking across the river just west of downtown (next to the lake and across from the ballpark). There is walking access from this lot into downtown via footpath. The towns are quaint with many attractions. Lanesboro has many places to eat, relax or rent a bike, canoe or kayak if you need.

A quaint and quiet town (at least when we were there) that has capitalized on the beauty and bountyof the Root River. Fishing, boating, floating, walking, hiking, biking in and around the river offers something for just about everyone. Take the time to see the Root River and enjoy what it has to offer. You will not be disappointed.

I don’t know of any lakes in the area. But the Root River has many sandbars to sit in the water. Two small beaches to swim but may be crowded on warm days. It’s a pretty lazy river so swimming along with a tube is possible and fun.

Where is the best place to kayak for a 10 mile trip? We will park one vehicle at the start, and another at the end. Where should we be parking?
