We went her twice while visiting Dillon, Montana and enjoyed digging for crystals. We found a few points, mostly clear with a couple being nearly an inch in length. Make sure and bring a small shovel or a pick, a small garden hand rake, water and BUG SPRAY! The dear flies, I think that’s what they’re called, like to bite! I didn’t bring spray the first day and got a number of bites, but the second day Deep Woods Off worked wonderfully and kept them away! Fun way to spend some time. Also when you come into the area, the road to the right leads to an area with picnic tables as well.

I love, love, love this spot for crystal digging. You can’t beat the payoff.
Also, the Elkhorn Lodge is about 5 miles down the road.

Loved digging for crystals with the family. We found some crystals right away and found a nice large one to boot.

According to Trip Advisor, Crystal Park is located in Polaris, MT., but several other sources, including Google, have it as located in Dillon, MT. It is actually 37 miles from Dillon and just outside of Polaris, but you would probably want to use Dillon as your base if you wanted to visit the park.
Crystal Park is a National Recreation Area located at an elevation of 7,800 feet in the Pioneer Mountains of southwest Montana. The park is for day use only (no over-night) and the facilities are designed for universal accessibility.
The park is a rock-hound’s dream! The Forest Service has reserved this 220-acre site for those who enjoy searching for and finding those special rocks.
Scattered across the surface and buried beneath it are a variety of quartz crystals – those beautiful hexagonal (six-sided) prisms, with a pointed "face" at each end. The crystals commonly found at Crystal Park can be clear, cloudy, white, gray or purple. Names often used for these specimens are smokey quartz and amethyst.
Specimens found at Crystal Park range from very small up to several inches in diameter. Both single crystals and clusters are regularly found.
We found the park to be easy to reach and dig areas also easily accessible.
Fees for admission are negligible!
We MOST HIGHLY Recommend Crystal Park in Montana!

Entertaining day of digging for crystals! Make sure you bring EVERYTHING you need for the day with you—
shovels (we used a little hand shovel and it worked fine for us, but there were others there with full size shovels), drinks, snacks, lunch, hand wipes, bug spray, sunscreen, hat to shield the sun ,container /bag for your finds,— it is many miles back to town and there is nothing there to purchase!!!!!!!
When you arrive and park self pay (5.00 dollars, very reasonable!) and drop the envelope in the pay box. Put the attached paper hanger on your dashboard/rear view window where the park ranger can see it.
The digging field is behind the parking lot about 15 car lengths through a little wooded area. There is a port-a-potty type restroom.
We found several crystals in about 3 hours digging in and around holes that were already there.

We were prepared to dig for crystals-shovel, crow bar, sifter, rock hammer, zippy bags for loot, etc. plus regular hiking supplies. We were all over and found crystals in others tailings piles due to rinsing rains and slanting sun. We also dug for our own. This is a family friendly location. There is a modest fee that is on the honor system so please pay to help support this location. Alas, there are always the folks who are special and were digging outside the officially fenced area creating issues for grazing livestock (as well as ignoring the rules).

When you get here, you walk about 50 - 100 yards from the car and there is a slope with a bunch of holes. It kind of looks like that movie holes (but the holes aren’t as deep).
We brought some small hand tools and just dug around in some of the existing holes. We ended up with a few clean-ish crystals and a bunch of little broken chunks. We ran in to some “rock hounds” who had some impressive stuff but they know what they’re looking did AND they bring full size shovels and big sifters.
We went when it was cold and snowing and still ended up spending a few hours. You just kind of get sucked into it.

Have been coming to Crystal park for 20 years. It is wonderful. Plan on spending at least several hours digging, and you will find great crystals.

We got there a little later in the day than we had hoped. It's hard to find a great place to dig, because the hillside is all holes. It was sad to see how many people ignored the rules. We had fun and did find some crystals.
