It wasn’t long after the 2022/2023 River Murray Flood that we drove down to the Murray Mouth Lookout to see the effect of the flood. This flood event was the largest since 1956, and the third highest flood ever recorded in South Australia.
From our previous visit to Sugars Beach in 2020 and comparing photos, we could see that the flood waters had dramatically enlarged the mouth and also widened it slightly to the south-east. Where there had been a sandbar the waves now pounded through.
If you haven’t been to Hindmarsh Island and out to the Lookout/Sugars Beach, I would encourage to do so. It’s a good drive from Adelaide and you can also visit Goolwa, Middleton and Port Elliott,

South Australia’s Coorong is internationally known as a tourist spot popularized by the 1976 movie Storm Boy adapted from the novel by South Australian author Colin Thiele. The Coorong National Park, of cultural significance to the Ngarrindjeri People, stretches some 145 kilometres from the Goolwa Barrage along the south-eastern coast of South Australia.
The viewing area of the Murray Mouth from Hindmarsh Island is part of the park and is known as Sugars Beach - quite often a popular fishing spot. It is a short drive from Goolwa over the Hindmarsh Bridge and onto the island. The drive is well signposted. Sugars Beach is about a kilometre further on from the first main car park. The car park at Sugars Beach is of a reasonable size and allows access via a designated walkway over the low sand dunes to the beach from where the mouth of the River Murray is clearly seen directly opposite. When we were there dredges were working on keeping the mouth open and not becoming silted up.
Sugars Beach is wide expanse of sand and offers views of not only the mouth of the Murray but also of the extensive sand dunes that are an integral part of the Coorong. It was quiet and relaxing with the waves gently lapping the shore. Really enjoyable.
Back to the main car park, where Coorong Café has set up their popup van. It was very popular with customers appropriately socially distancing. Offering freshly cooked take away with coffees and other drinks including a limited wine menu. We opted for a serve of fish and chips, where one serve of fish was actually two pieces, and soft drinks. Costs were very good and the quality of the food was superb. The chips were crispy with chicken salt and the fish was cooked in a golden crispy batter and served in a disposable cardboard box with lemon and tartare sauce included.
The service was very friendly and interactive whilst being made to feel as though you were the only person that mattered at that time.
Some found a spot on the rocks at the edge of the water and ate their choices. We took ours and went further down the road to another parking spot to enjoy.
Return? Sugars Beach is always a good spot to visit and with the added possibility of Coorong Café being there, I would have to say yes!

Very interesting to see this natural occurring meeting of river and sea. I was, however a bit sad to see this unique island so heavily built upon. New homes by the minute. The bridge is great to drive over and homes are modern but far too many.

Somewhere all Aussies should go and check out, especially those with any connection to the Murray. The Murray weaves its way thru three states and ends its journey here at the entrance to the Coorong also. Great fun on the water too for the family. And while you are there, check out the fish cafe!

We recently visited Lake Hume where we enjoyed picnic and toilet facilities. Yesterday I visited the magnificent Murray Mouth and marvelled at the end of of this most important river for the three states that use it. Unlike the beginning of the Murray as we know it, there were no picnic or toilet facilities for tourists. The closest toilet was 2.9km away!

We visited on a sunny winter’s day with only a light breeze and we really enjoyed the scenery. We saw the dredgers at the river mouth and a colony of seals across the water on the opposite beach. The beach itself on the Hindmarsh Island side was huge and flat. The kids enjoyed running and drawing in the sand and we enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. It wouldn’t be much fun in windy or wet conditions but pick your day and it’s worth the visit.
