Beautiful State Park With Panoramic Views, Great Hiking, Hostile Community Members To Tourists

I was on my way to Harriman State Park, driving along on Seven Lakes Dr., when I unexpectedly encountered a problem with my car - causing me to have to pull off to an unmarked trailhead (at Harriman) at least 1-2 miles before the part of the park I really planning to park at. Long story short, I received a nice-nasty note on the windshield of my car while I took a little hike down in the canyon, and then later that day, a woman (shown in the photo) walked up and began snooping around, peeping into the windows of my car (she didn't realize I was sitting on the back of the truck having a snack).

Completely feeling helpless and unable to even help myself, as my car problem was something that was not an easy, quick fix, there wasn't much that I could do. The nice-nasty note indicated that someone wanted me to move out of that parking spot because someone had been murdered there 50 years back, but again, I was pretty much in a hopeless position at that particular moment.

Because people are just messed up, someone then returned later that evening to throw a huge stone at my windshield - trying to smash it in, and then speeding off down Seven Lakes going south.

I called 911, Stony Point PD arrived and pretty much accused me of imagining that a large stone had just been hurled at my windshield moments before he arrived, as, he mentioned in the dark with his flashlight, "I don't see any rock."

I look down, we're standing on a dirt landing surrounded by rocks and stones.

Oh! And then there was the mark on my windshield, but that’s neither here nor there.

Seems like a lovely community of people. Beautiful park by the way :)

Happy Wednesday everyone! :)

Seven Lakes Drive during autumn is a must! It’s an easy drive with stunning views of the lakes. There are parking lots scattered around that are marked as picnic areas - gives you an opportunity to park up and snap some memorable pics. We went early in the morning on a Saturday. It was cold, but the views made up for it. It’s a lovely park so close to NYC - on a clear day, you can make out the New York skyline from Perkins Memorial.

I’d say it starts to get busy around 9:30/10AM. We passed by the visitor center on our way out of the park close to 11 o’clock and the parking lot was full. Cars were lined up on both sides of the street!

Worst camping experience ever. We arrived at 2:45 and had to wait until 3pm to check in which staff sat and chatted with each other. Wardens drive around in constant golf cart surveillance while campers are trying to enjoy nature.

Old, worn-out park. Narrow roads, signage and maps make no sense and not accurate. One side of the front gate was closed with cones and signs saying ‘ No entrance except campers, water in pond toxic’. Huh? I almost hit the gate and did take out a few cones getting through the gate. All roads in the park are single lane and none are one way. Makes for some interesting stand offs. Most sites are either tent sites or “platform” tent sites. D4 is listed as a RV site. Hard to figure out how to park my 27’ trailer. Not level and rocky. Found a 10’ x 10’ spot that was semi-level, placed my wheels on it and managed to get close to level. I’m writing this now at the park and I’m not sure how im going to get out my camper out of this campground!

Large, loud groups of homeless-looking people. They feel free to walk through your site. No hookups. There is a water spigot at the dump station that appears to be marked as potable but it’s placed so that people use it to flush their tanks. The kid at the registration bldg said NOT to drink that water, but to fill jugs at the cleaning stations scattered among the platform tent sites. Total pain.

Stay anywhere but here.

We hiked yesterday from Reeves meadow visitors centre near Sloatsburg, NY 4mile trail with our two sons (14 and 7 years old). It was absolutely beautiful,
even some adrenalin was involved when we had to climb up the rocky part. The view from the top was breathtaking, absolutely worth it. And our boys enjoyed the rock climbing while I enjoyed the river and little creeks. A++++ hike.

Beautiful park with nice walking trails. We saw pelicans and otters while there and they have picnic areas. The cost is reasonable and it includes two other parks if you go the same day. Nice and quiet if you want the beauty of Yellowstone without the crowds.

We stayed one night in two of their new tent ("Tentrr") accommodations. The tents are roomy and rugged and comprise a comfortable double bed, two Adirondack chairs, a fire pit, picnic table, small port-a-potty, a propane stove, a five-gallon water cistern and plastic-kit "sun shower."

The propane stoves didn't work (temperatures got down into the 40s). Despite informing us that a water spigot was available at the public buildings, none was available - thus negating the utility of the cistern and "sun shower." I had to drive 20 minutes to purchase gallons of water.

The camp keeper, however, was very pleasant and responsive. That said, they've got a long way to go to improve camp management. I therefore cannot recommend their "Tentrr" accommodations.

I have hiked throughout this region for the past 30 years and have lost track of how many miles and trails I have covered. Now I am taking my daughters here for the past decade; they started hiking at 2 and climbed Bear Mountain from the base at 4. Has been a much-needed outlet during a pandemic but be warned, unlike 20 years ago, the parking fills up early - by about 9 am.

A friend told me about this state park, when I was looking for a spot with fall foliage that wasn't too far of a drive. It's about an hour outside of NYC, so it's perfect for a day trip.

My husband and I got here at around 11 am on a Sunday and it was pretty packed, expectedly so. The parking lot is small so it was already filled up, but everyone was parking on the side of the road. Even that was pretty filled up, so I'd recommend driving a little past the trail head, making a U-turn, and parking across the street. The closest spot we found was about .5 miles from the trail head, which wasn't bad walking there, but did seem like an eternity when we were walking back to the car.

We did the Reeves Brook Loop Trail (4.9 miles), which I found on All Trails (highly recommend this app!). It is a bit confusing because the loop goes from white to blue to orange to red, so you really have to pay attention to where the paths divert. There's nothing to really see along the way but the views at the top are terrific! However, you do have to actually climb some rocks to get to the top, but it was doable. We were able to do so without any equipment. The trail itself was really only crowded near the trail entrances. Other than that, it wasn't too bad. Most people were respectful and wearing masks.

The all trails app mentioned that there was a lake, but it's not actually along the trail. You have to actually drive quite a bit (maybe 5 minutes or so) past the trail head to get to the lake.

It might be getting too cold for me to do another hike this year, but I wouldn't mind doing some of the other trails next year!

We did a hike here on the AT. Even though some of the routes have challenging areas, the maintenance of the trails here is very well done. Most importantly, the markers are clearly visible and in the right spots so one cannot easily get lost.

The highlight of the trail we were on was island pond. It was a great approach and a beautiful view. I took a few pics from the trail.

Overall, a great time!
