Review 21 day trip Cameroon with Buma Peter Linonge of Ecotour Guides Cameroon, Buea
From 15th December 2019 until 12th January 2020 I travelled to Cameroon. I have been many times in Africa, but never visited this fascinating and beautiful, rich (nature, culture) country. As I prefer to travel alone, but not all alone, as I like good company, I decided to look for a local guide. I found the most wonderful guide one can wish for in Mr. Buma Peter Linonge, owner of Ecotour Guides Cameroon, located in Buea.
I found Buma on internet and I sent him an e-mail if he was available during the indicated period. Also I asked him to provide a program containing lots of hikes in the most stunning nature of Cameroon, as well as the richness of its culture. Cameroon is not a small country, and travelling is not easy, but with Buma it was the most efficient and spectacular experience.
Our Itinerary comprised of 5 sections:
1) Douala – Kribi – Lobe Waterfalls – Campo Ma’an National Parc – Douala
2) Douala – Ekom Nkam waterfalls – Dschang civilisation Museum – Baffousam – Metche waterfalls – Foumban – Mt. Mbapit – Baham – Bandjoun – Yaoundé
3) Yaoundé – Dja forest Reserve – Yaounde
4) Yaoundé – Buea – 5 days hike Mt. Cameroon – Limbe
5) Limbe (hotel at beach)
This program was so well worked out by Buma. It was full, but very balanced in variety as to nature, culture, activities. This trip I would have never been able to do by myself in such a short time.
Buma made my dream come true in all aspects. Finding a guide who resonates so well with his customer is like finding a needle in a haystack. Buma is very skilled, experienced over many years, up to date in local information, has a large network in Cameroon, is easy going (which is admirable given the circumstances). Buma will do his utmost to make your holiday you will never forget in your life. He provides service almost to perfection. Buma is most fun to be with, has lots of information, knowledge, intelligence and wisdom, which feels like luxurious. Most importantly: he makes me feel at home and safe where ever we are.
Why do I strongly recommend Buma?
1. STRONG COMMUNICATION SKILLS
It all starts with very good and strong communication. It took a pleasant while by emailing hence and force until we settled a very good agreement for both parties. What is most important (at least to me) is trust. It is quite a risk to go on a trip with a guide you do not know. But from moment one Buma was very reassuring, and made me feel at ease, in which he never disappointed me. During the three weeks we were together Buma gave me daily updates of the tour, and we discussed other options, made some adaptations, which increased the end result enormously.
2. PERSONABLE & OUTGOING
Buma is sensitive to your wishes and wants to meet them by providing the maximum possible service. He is also very assertive in indicating what is possible and what not. He is outgoing, very sociable, entertaining, and has a lot of humour.
3. A MEMORY LIKE A STEAL TRAP
Buma knows his way in Cameroon by heart. He provides local guides who have knowledge of the area (culture, nature, hicking)
4. IMPROVISATIONAL SKILLS
Travelling in Africa needs flexibility, on only for a guide, but also for the traveller. It takes two to tango. We made very clear agreements in advance, but we know that reality is sometimes different. Sometimes it leads to a small disappointment, but in this journey it mostly led to unexpected surprises. And this needs an open mind, mutual understanding, and improvisation. Buma is capable of providing what is needed in the moment, given the circumstances.
5. ENTHUSIASM
Buma is very enthusiastic about Cameroon, travelling, and showing the beauty of his country. Every country has its downsides, he gives a very realistic picture of living in Cameroon, without making it a burden. To stay enthusiastic despite sometimes hardships is really an art of living, which buma understands very well. To me Buma is a genuine person and tour guide.
6. HUMOUR
Buma has a lot of humor, which is necessary and entertaining. It is quite human and normal that one gets sometimes tired or irritated (as this is not a all inclusive package deal holiday in Benidorm), but Buma and me were always capable of seeing the humour of every situation.
7. PUNCTUALITY
Buma is very strict in appointments, shows up in time in an almost un-african manner (I don’t want to be perojative!). Being Dutch, I am used to being punctual, and agreement is agreement. Buma loves this mantra too, which is a necessity if you have a very ambitious itinerary in a relative short time.
8. ORGANISATION SKILLS
Being alone in a strange country (I can say I have travelled the world) it is very important that you have a guide who knows his way, or where to find other local guides to lead our path. Buma has a vast network of local guides. I never got the feeling being lost (but Cameroon is definitely not the Netherlands in terms of size and accessibility by transport). Despite the vastness, all transport went smoothly. Buma has extensive logistic and organisation skills to be able to offer such a vast and varied program as he has offered and completed.
9. THE KNOWLEDGE OF A LOCAL
The reason I definitely wanted to travel with a local is that I wanted to look through the eyes of a local. For me local knowledge of local customs, culture is a must. Additional local guides provided a broad picture of the vast country of Cameroon.
10. PASSION
Knowing the facts of the country is necessary, but the tour is really becoming outstanding if your guide is passionate about what he is doing, and about his country. Every day I felt positively carried away in a by the program. I told Buma: everywhere we go I want to stay longer, which is a good sign. Buma knows how to convey his enthusiasm to me, the tourist.
Last but not least: be open minded, and (very) fit, and not over demanding. You will have a most wonderful and splendid holiday in Cameroon with your excellent host Buma Peter Linonge of Ecotour Guides Cameroon in Buea.

I had the chance to discover the west region of Cameroon with Peter and Josephine. It was a great experience and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get to know the rich culture and nature of that region. As I had only spent two months before in Cameroon, I did not feel comfortable travelling around by myself so this was a great option and I think I definitely would not have seen as much as I saw with Ecotourguides. They took me exactly the places I was interested in and it was a great combination of exploring the nature and visiting cultural sights.
The first day we left from Yaoundé to Bafoussam, which was about a 5 hour drive. It was very nice to see Cameroon’s landscape and I felt very safe in the small SUV with Simon as a driver. I could really enjoy just watching the passing fields and forrest out of the window, and crossing the Sanaga river. On the way we visited the palace of the Chiefdom of Bandjoum, where I learned about the culture of chiefdoms. I did not know heritages like this still existed. The next days I should learn even more about those chiefdoms, their traditions and rites, visiting other chiefdoms and palaces with attached museums. As there weren’t any other guests by the time I got there, I usually had a guide and the museums for myself, and most of the guides explained everything very vividly to me, so that I could really imagine what life in a chiefdom is like.
The highlights for me of this 6days trip were the two hikes we did. The first one was on Mt Mbapit, where we had a fabulous view on a crater lake after having climbed a lot of stairs. That was worth it! Fortunately we found many fresh agaves on the way to gain some power. The other hike was in the area of Mt. Manengouba. After a hike of about 2,5 hours through plantain plantations, crossing a little village in the middle of the mountains, many sheep, cows and horses we arrived at the top of a hill, were we had a great view on the vastness with the female one of the twinlakes. As I also wanted to see the male lake we all went down the hill to have a view on both of the lakes at the same time. Very impressing!
Another highlight of the trip was visiting the Ekom Nkam Waterfalls. One of the most beautiful places I have visited so far. Makes sense that it was chosen to shot the movie Tarzan in 1984.
All in all I had a very great time with Peter and Josephine as Guides and am happy they allowed me to discover Cameroun in this way. I can also recommend visiting the west region, it is far away from mass tourism though has culturally and scenically a lot to offer. The climate is not as hot as in the center region and was very agreeable for me. And, what is most important, I felt very comfortable travelling with Peter and Josephine, they were very kind and always tried to find out what might interest me. We also shared dinner often, which was nice for me as I was travelling alone. Thank you a lot!

My partner Elan and I spent two weeks in Cameroon in February 2016. Our trip was organized and guided by Buma Peter of Ecotourguides Cameroon. We had an amazing trip and highly recommend Buma and his whole team. They were very professional and helpful. We couldn't have done it with out them. First we were met at the airport and given a ride to our hotel. We spent the next 4 days hiking mount Cameroon, which may be the most beautiful hike I have ever been on. You climb up through the jungle, reach an almost alien crater landscape on top and descend through an elephant inhabited grassland on the way down. The hike was strenuous, but Buma's guides made sure we had a comfortable and safe experience. Later in the trip Burma's guide Richard drove us on the ring road tour in the North and we saw much of traditional Cameroon lifestyle and culture in the area. Too much to describe in one review, you have to experience it for yourself!

After climbing Kilimanjaro in 2015, I thought that will be a piece of cake but far wrong...train hard and have the determination to reach the summit! Peter and his guide's are supportive and do everything possible to help you but the walking you have to do on your own...

Cameroon- Climbed Mount Cameroon with Jiovanni and Mikael. Mount Cameroon is 13,255 feet and an active volcano. The climb is about 10,000 feet of vertical and usually a 3 day climb( did it in 2 but suffered) It’s the highest point in West and Central Africa. I booked my climb with Buma Linonge Peter. He picked me up from the airport in Douala and drove me the 90 minutes to Buea, and stayed overnight in Buea. Buea is in the English speaking region and a vey nice town with excellent weather. Giovanni was my guide and Mikael our porter, both fabulous guys and still communicate with them regularly, The first day climbed 5000 feet to a German built Refugio. The second day sumitted and descended the 10,000 feet, I would not have made it down if it wasn’t for Jiovanni and Michael, they really took care of me. If I had planned more time I would have taken another day and descended a different route where there are forest elephants and some other interesting animals. Stayed another night in Buea and had a few Sunday morning farewell beers with the boys, they love to drink in Buea. Peter took me to see the primate rehabilitation center and botanical gardens in Limbe and then back to Douala. I would highly recommend ecotour and Peter, great reliable caring guides, they guide everywhere in Cameroon, I can’t say enough positive about my experience with these people.

I climbed the mountain at the start of September when the weather is still cold and rainy. I knew the risk going into the climb that the weather may prevent me from reaching the summit but chose to attempt anyway.
I did a two day trek and on the second day the weather was too poor to reach the summit so we had to turn back and go down. I'm still glad I attempted as the experience was unreal, the views amazing and Buma Peter provided an excellent service with quality food.

My friend and I managed to climb to the summit of Mt.Cameroon, which is as high as 4,090m!!!!
We didn't have any experience of climbing mountains before, but could achieve the summit with the help of very supportive local guide, Buma Peter from Ecotour guides Cameroon.
Climbing Mt.Cameroon was really really hard for us, but we enjoyed great view from above the clouds, and a variety of landscape passed by such as rain forest and grasslands.
We also enjoyed camping in hut.
On the 3rd day, we reached the summit, feeling so great of achieving 4,090m!!!
As Aug was rainy season, sometimes it was raining, but not all the time.
And because of low season, there were few people, which was really good!
I'll definitely go back there again someday!!
