I had never even heard of Widow Jane until one of my best friends booked us in for a distillery visit on a trip to NY. We got there covered in sweat, having run from the ferry on a super hot and ridiculously humid July day. If anything, it made the experience even better. The distillery itself is lovely (and I had no idea there was such a thing in NY City!) but the whisky is out of this world. The 15yr Vaults is possibly the best thing I've had outside of Stagg or Pappy Van (and at 10% the price...). The bar next door is a great place to finish off the visit (if you can nab a seat!!).

I booked this tour as a christmas gift for my boyfriend while we were on holiday in NYC as he loves bourbon. We were really excited to go, however I am left feeling quite apathetic about the trip. I chose this one specifically as online it was promoted as a chocolate and whisky tasting and tour which would have been both our favourites, however on arrival was told the chocolate production ended in the summer and won’t be restarting. (It’s December, that should have been updated and clear on all the booking details etc). The tour itself was interesting, it was cool to see they’ve developed a special corn for their bourbon, but the delivery was unenthusiastic. The tasting was fair, we tried two rye whiskies and a bourbon, however we didn’t get any guidance on what to taste/smell for etc.

I saw another comment which recommended trying out other distillery tours and I really agree, it’s all there on the whisky side, it just needs finessing.

Visiting Widow Jane distillery’s been one of the most exciting experiences in New York. For this I have to thank Adam, who’s been kind and helpful. I didn’t visit all the distillery. I only had the chance to do a tasting with many selections of Widow Jane, all well-explained by the bar manager. I learnt many information about the Widow Jane whiskey and its making process. I enjoyed their own selections and I liked te story of the distillery. I’m pretty sure it’s got a high potential to succeed in the spirit market. I wish them luck and I look forward to taste their older selections which are still maturing in the barrels. I’d also like to thank Michele, the vice manager who’s kind to me and very welcoming.
Thank you guys. I loved my visit!

This is a combination of chocolate factory and whiskey distillery. the tour is very informative, you get to know how they make the spirit and the story around the distillery name. they have a excellent Bourbon ( Widow Jane 10 years old). You can also buy chocolate there. A bit expensive though, but quite good.

Being that my wife and I like chocolate and bourbon we assumed that the tour and tasting would be a fun experience. The atmosphere far surpasses the experience. The owners/investors put a great deal of time into the construction of the building, however, the investment in staff that is equally as passionate is needed. Having toured many breweries, distilleries, and chocolatier work-shops Widow Jane falls to the bottom of the list. The main disappointment was the sampling, and what seemed as disinterest from the tour staff. Getting to Red Hook is not the easiest so providing a great experience is a must. My recommendation would be 1) stock the products you sample. 2) Provide a production exhibit showing product coming off the line or being produced. 3) This is not prohibition get a bit heavy handed with your tasting flight and chocolate. I almost put my self down for two flights of the same juice as I couldn't get a good chew for the bourbon tasting. 4) People spending $90 on .375ml don't want to sample out of plastic thimbles. Having been to Tuthill House (Hudson Baby Bourbon), Kings County, and Other Half all in the same weekend I would say Widow Jane probably should do a tour at each of those places to elevate their performance.

It was easy to purchase the tickets online for our little group of 9. We were welcomed with a whiskey sour in the adjacent bar BOTANICA. From there we started with their collection of antique chocolate making tools followed by their chocolate manufacturing facility where they go from raw beans to finished chocolate. Naturally, there were some nice sample of their chocolate.
Second part of the tour followed the whiskey making process from the arrival of the water to the mash room to the still and rack house (where the barrels are stored). In the rack house you got a good smell of the angel's share. Back to the still/shop for a sample of 3 whiskey's with the opportunity to purchase samples or bottles. All in all a lovely afternoon.

The building itself is very cool with an outdoor courtyard in the middle. The chocolate and spirits are quite good. The rum was my favorite, very smooth and distinct flavor. Unfortunately the tour was awful as the staff do not seem to enjoy their jobs. There was only 2 staff members there the day we went, a male and a female so I can only comment on their behavior. They do not smile, do not engage at all with the tour group and seem very irritated by questions. They seem to be trying very hard on purpose to present a dark, gloomy and moody disposition. The chocolate tour given to us by a male staff member was slightly better because he didn't lecture us but rather gave us a nice explanation about their specific chocolate making process. But he did not ask if we had questions or engage with us at all. The tour group was quite large, probably about 20 people and different people tried to ask a question or make a joke but he seemed indifferent to everyone. During the chocolate part of the tour, the female employee stormed through the middle of the tour group, did not say excuse me or smile and then stormed back and I was thinking to myself that I was glad that we didn't have her for the tour. Then we proceeded to find out that she would be giving the distillery part of the tour, yikes! The "tour" consisted of standing in one small room in one spot for well over a half hour listen to her lecture us with her knowledge of spirit making. We were not allowed to ask questions. In fact when people tried, she just talked over them. It was horrible. Finally we got to the tastings and she was so rude. We tried to ask questions again and she just rolled her eyes and stood there drinking her tea and singing to the music. It was really bizarre. We've been on many other tours and tastings, wine, craft beer, whiskey etc and all the tour guides are usually engaging and want you to appreciate their specific approach to what they're making, not lecture you and seem so unimpressed with the people they're giving the tour to. My advice, go for a tasting or 2 and buy some product. Don't waste your money on a tour. The products are pricey though for example, $8 USD for a small chocolate bar but for a splurge it's worth it. We did buy the rum and one of the bourbons because we liked the taste but unfortunately the staff(especially the female employee) really ruined the experience and we were quite annoyed that we spent $20 each on the tour.

Way off the beaten path from mid-town, but I've been a long time fan of their bourbon and rye so looked forward to making the trek out to Red Hook. The tasting room itself is nice but not much else to see. Maybe during busier times they offer tours but not much going on when we visited. I did a tasting of their small-batch reserve stuff which was great. Since it's not available elsewhere, I decided to pick up a bottle of one of the reserve bourbons. At $125 for a 375ML bottle it's not cheap, but will be nice to have for special occasions. My issue is that with that kind of price, you would think they'd waive the $20 fee for the tasting, or the extra $2 for a small cup of hot chocolate. But no, everything was charged in full. Just a pet peeve of mine. If you're a fan or in the area, worth a stop by, but I wouldn't go out of my way to return.

The chap on the NY water taxi told us about Widow Jane's my husband is a keen bourbon drinker and I love chocolate so it seemed like an afternoon to suit us both. We turned up on the off chance of a walk in tour and were pleasantly surprised they could accommodate us.
My husband sampled several different bourbons and final settled on 2 bottles to take away. The man that show us around was extremely knowable and very enthusiastic and made the tour and tasting interesting. I had a delicious cup of hot chocolate.
