A fantastic place to spend a few hours,,
So much history and information, everything has its own story so even the young ones can understand what things were and done....
staff are so helpful and will take the time to explain things.
Great story about the stump jumping plough, whales 🐳 and ship wrecks
Allow a couple of hours.

We were met at the door by a local guide, ushered into the museum and given the most enthusiastic welcome I have ever had at any institution. While we watched a video about the development of the "Stump Jump Plough" we were given a cup of tea and delicious home made scones (all part of the service)
We will go back again because there was so much to see and such a special and informative welcome tour.

Thank you for your very encouraging review. Our volunteers love putting on special event days to give the public information about specific sections of or history. On these day you may be met by people in period costume, always with fresh scones and tea and coffee served safely for your protection. We have a rich agricultural history and also some maritime and general history, as you say well worth a visit.

Very well-presented museum, with displays to cater for a range of interests. Apart from agricultural and manufacturing history, there is a fine display of wedding dresses, covering the late 19th and much of the 20th century. The museum staffer in attendance was very knowledgeable.

This is a great litle museum with a range of exhibits spanning local history and events. Although the invention of the stump jump plow is a major feature, the museum covers a broader range than this, including fascinating information about local ship wrecks. The volunteer guides, Derek and Joy, were wonderfully friendly and extremely knowledgeable about local history and happy to share their own experiences. All in all, a lovely way to spend some time in Ardrossan

Finally got to the Ardrossan Historical Museum itself. Was warmly welcomed by local volunteers and given an informative outline of what was to be found in the museum. Armed with location map set forth on a journey of discovery to find out about the local history of Ardrossan and what makes Ardrossan unique.

Firstly more information about the December 2014 beached sperm whales and the part jaw of the one beached near the Ardrossan Jetty. From there on it was visit into yesterday with a mixture of what makes up a community. From salvaged items from shipwrecks, to fashions of various days, to sewing machines, to the 1900 Pony Romeo Camera, to a small Royal event collection, to medical equipment, to bottles of varying types, and to farm machinery – it is all here!

Of local interest is the original EFS fire trailer used from 1947 nothing like the fire fighting trucks of today! Tucked away out the back is the original Harbour Masters Office now set up as an older General Store.

An hour went quickly by and I must admit not everything deserved the time it should have had. I did enjoy the walk through as it brought back many memories of my grandparents and other relatives’ farms as I was growing up.

With so much on display and limited space, there was not a feeling of displays being crammed in. With regional museums like Ardrossan relying on volunteer help, it is amazing what these people do in conserving local history. I tip my hat to you!

If having a spare hour in Ardrossan, I would recommend the museum to you. It is worth the small donation/entry fee.

Return? Is in Ardrossan with uncommitted time, then I would return to the museum.
