What an amazing historic town New Norcia is. The town tour is a must and throw in the museum and art gallery to learn more about its history. The buildings are incredible, what a lot of work. The chapel is spectacular and we were blessed to hear Father Robert play the piped organ and also piano, truly a gifted musician. We spent two full days there and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Where is the honest up front full disclosure when visiting about the historical suffering and abuse of indigenous and the lack of compensation to the families?
Such an incredible collection and treasure of art work with (ironically) works by Australian indigenous artist icons.
With thousands of visitors paying $$$ for entry/meals/ accommodation etc what % goes to the victims?

Just outstanding, the tour was informative and the wealth of artistic beauty just inspiring, a family of five, we loved it, my only annoyance is I only found out about this place on the eve of our departure back to NSW, strongly recommend staying the night here, the place is peace personified.

The tour and museum are informative to a point. Like a previous reviewer has mentioned there is a shameful history that barely receives any attention. I regret I didn’t know this history before I went either. The impression of an historical whitewash at New Norcia had me researching after my visit. In the spirit of truth and reconciliation greater honesty and acknowledgment should be expected from a religious organisation.

Note that this is purely a review of the New Norcia Museum & Art Gallery - not the town itself, or the tours, or any other part of the town.
The museum and gallery are well laid out even though it's had to be retrofitted into an old building. It covers a few levels but a lift is available for those who can't manage steps.
The museum section highlights the history of New Norcia through a mix of objects, display boards and the like. Lots to read and lots to see. There are a couple of special collections and displays which are also worth looking at. There are certainly some treasures there. Some of the religious pieces are amazing and the sort of things you would find in good European museums.
The artworks have a focus on religious images and are wonderful. They include lots of European artworks dating back centuries as well as a growing collection of more contemporary (mainly Australian) art. Well worth taking time to admire.
Well worth a visit. I should maybe state that I'm an atheist but that didn't stop me admiring the collections.

The tour around New Norcia was incredible, Gary our tour guide was excellent very informative and went out of his way to show our group some little extras. He was more than willing to answer all our questions and also was very helpful when we needed accommodation.
If you do the tour ask for GARY

Do the two hour walking tour. It’s a gentle pace with “behind the scenes history and access”. Fascinating. The guides really know their stuff. Information delivered with aplomb

If you are in or around Perth, you must take time to visit New Norcia. The museum, visitor centre and gift shop are priceless.

New Norcia is not what we expected at all. We visited because of the old bakery which is unfortunately no longer. We imagined it to be similar to York but with more history and different architecture. The reality is that the town has a very dark and sinister past that is still reflected in its atmosphere. There are no cafes or playgrounds or anything. There is a petrol station and a shop in the monastery but that’s it. Walking round the grounds there was nobody there. Asking for information was tricky and we just felt unwelcome. It seems the past of the town has cloaked it in a shame that it’s not proud of and doesn’t want to admit to anyone.

A group of 50 seniors visited new Norcia today on a day trip organized by Hello World, Alexander Heights. I have wanted to visit for 45 years and it has taken Covid restrictions for me to visit our own back yard. It is the only Monastic town in Australia and its history is extremely interesting. The old historical buildings have a beautiful architectural style and there are three beautiful churches with beautiful paintings in them. One almost like a mini Sistine Chapel. Being less that two hours from Perth it is an interesting drive through farming country, and you see the DISK as you drive up. Actually I would even recommend it for a weekend stay in the excellent hotel that they have there. Our meal was excellent on a beautiful laid tables, and tea served in the most colorful cup and pots. Reasonably priced I would recommend that as many people from Western Australia consider visiting, and even spending a weekend there. Stop at the Bindoon bakery on your drive there. I certainly will be doing it. David Schokman.

Normal clothes are ok but would suggest good shoes for walking around, basically roads and paths.

Both my father and I will be over in Perth from 14/4/15 until 20/4/15, we would love to visit New Norcia whilst we are there. Just wondering how far in advance we have to book?
Looking forward to your reply,
Cheers
