if you have a taste for the art and the artist. Then only. Be prepared for bargains and have a lot of money in your pockets as you will like whatever they show.

Indigenous patachitra paintings on cloth. Similar paintings on coconut, palm leaves and passport mache. The artists live on either side of a lane going round the village. Many of them are national award winners. The artist demonstrated how the paper and design for the paintings were prepared. His spouse and toddler were also involved in the process. Fascinating, they use lamp black and sea shells for the black and white colours. All the pigments are natural. Rats hair for the brushes!
At the village entrance are busts of famed Odissi master Kelucharan Mohapatra. The house he was born in, a piece of Odia heritage, is in ruins. The approach road is tenuous and the village cloaked with poverty. The art is produced against all odds. Its a wonder it survives.

This place is a must visit on the way to Puri from Bhubaneshwar. It is a small village around 10-15 mins drive from the more popular Pipli village which is famous for applique work. It is the place famous for patta chitra, which is actually sketches done on palm leaves and also, cloth. They use all natural colours and the designs are very intricate and beautiful. Even the walls of the small houses are painted beautifully with images of birds, animals, mythological characters and deities. They have schools that teach these drawings and you can visit and see the students practicing. You can buy the paintings (they come in all sizes) and even bookmarks and small wooden toys.

I went to this village looking at good reviews at TripAdvisor while we are also huge art lovers and buy what we really think is worth a price.

But as soon as you land to this place the whole crowd of shop owners will surround your vehicle and everyone wants you to visit their shop and we went to 2-3 shop owners or artist and everywhere you'll find the similar art and the prices they ask for is huge while appreciate the hard-work that went through making those paintings but there is nothing new you can find in those paintings.

We were coming back from Sun Temple and on the way back we visited this village, so it was already very dark, but the artists are truly great, the pattachitra work is indeed beautiful, the exterior walls of houses are itself so beautiful...
Paintings on the supari( arecanut), coconut, and many artefacts were available.. Though the prices are steep...but the work is fabulous...
