if you have a taste for the art and the artist. Then only. Be prepared for bargains and have a lot of money in your pockets as you will like whatever they show.

Indigenous patachitra paintings on cloth. Similar paintings on coconut, palm leaves and passport mache. The artists live on either side of a lane going round the village. Many of them are national award winners. The artist demonstrated how the paper and design for the paintings were prepared. His spouse and toddler were also involved in the process. Fascinating, they use lamp black and sea shells for the black and white colours. All the pigments are natural. Rats hair for the brushes!
At the village entrance are busts of famed Odissi master Kelucharan Mohapatra. The house he was born in, a piece of Odia heritage, is in ruins. The approach road is tenuous and the village cloaked with poverty. The art is produced against all odds. Its a wonder it survives.

This place is a must visit on the way to Puri from Bhubaneshwar. It is a small village around 10-15 mins drive from the more popular Pipli village which is famous for applique work. It is the place famous for patta chitra, which is actually sketches done on palm leaves and also, cloth. They use all natural colours and the designs are very intricate and beautiful. Even the walls of the small houses are painted beautifully with images of birds, animals, mythological characters and deities. They have schools that teach these drawings and you can visit and see the students practicing. You can buy the paintings (they come in all sizes) and even bookmarks and small wooden toys.

I went to this village looking at good reviews at TripAdvisor while we are also huge art lovers and buy what we really think is worth a price.
But as soon as you land to this place the whole crowd of shop owners will surround your vehicle and everyone wants you to visit their shop and we went to 2-3 shop owners or artist and everywhere you'll find the similar art and the prices they ask for is huge while appreciate the hard-work that went through making those paintings but there is nothing new you can find in those paintings.

We were coming back from Sun Temple and on the way back we visited this village, so it was already very dark, but the artists are truly great, the pattachitra work is indeed beautiful, the exterior walls of houses are itself so beautiful...
Paintings on the supari( arecanut), coconut, and many artefacts were available.. Though the prices are steep...but the work is fabulous...

Can you confirm the price of these paintings?

Painting is an art. How you look at it, and like it, will be base for price. Ask the Shop owner price if interested in buying and start negotiations from 25/30% of quote and amicably reach to price acceptable to both.

Hi, I am also looking at going and learning art and spending some time there. Would you by any chance know who to contact regarding this? Do the villagers take on students to learn from? Where did the foreigner that you interacted with, stay? Any guidance would be greatly helpful to start looking!

Well if you are that keen... arrange your stay at puri (which is a nearby town). Visit this place couple of times (don’t say anyone your purpose of visit) and see where things lead. In the entrance of the village you will see some of the shops... don’t stop their... go little further to the heart of the village... their you will see people working on their art in every house.. talk to them in their house... and you may find some luck... also check out Shantiniketan, visva Bharti university specially for fine arts , in West Bengal

can you suggest some offbeat places to visit near bhubneshwere and Cuttak.
Sagar R
Siliguri, India28 contribuciones
Certainly there are plenty of options lying between Bhubaneswar and cuttak, but all offbeat places have become tourist attraction by now! Hats off to our poulation outburst...Still you may try staying at Konark beachside instead of Puri or other popular beaches where you can get some kind of "off beat" feelings. Bhitarkanika National park and Chandipur near Balasore may also be visited for the same reason. Always Keep in mind offbeat places comes with serenity and risks as well. Please do calculate all aspects before hand. All facilities may not be available on so called offbeat places.

Sagar R
Siliguri, India28 contribuciones
There should be websites who sells artifacts online, but it is advisable to collect them on spot. Great Bargains , tailor made designs and choice of variety are main benefits from on spot purchases , it is a different experience altogether.
If you ever make visit to these places you may collect one of them as a memento else variety of similar artifacts and artist village are available in other places as well.
