Having spent a lovely few hours in Alnwick we popped into the grounds of St Michael's on our way back to the car from Alnwick Castle.

How I sympathise with those who found this church closed; the building interior is superb. A long, unusually long nave with timbered roof is light and elegant is style despite its many transformations in 15th, 17th and 18th centuries. The rather stubby tower, too short for the length of the nave is still attractive, especially after extensive renovation over the last decade. New (or recycled) bells have been put in place and the ringing will start again soon. a wonderfully enthusiastic warden provided a brief but greatly appreciated insight into the work and the love and energy required to complete it. There are examples of the old lead and the roof graffiti found during the restoration. Outside the churchyard records the harsh reality of earlier centuries, of infants dying frequently be fore reaching 5 and the mothers not surviving childbirth. Well worth a visit - I hope they have the volunteers to open it regularly as it is a gem.

The calmness of the Church and the feeling of being amongst History everywhere you looked. Have been to many churches this is in my top three. I was attending a Wedding Blessing, after Registry Office Wedding. Keeping to Lockdown rules the staff were professional and added to the great mood of the day. You do not need to get married it is a well worth it visit.

This was open when I went on chance.
It is a big and well cared for church, though a lot of restoration work can't be carried because the skills are not available these days.
Very friendly people working there.
The earliest traces date from the 8th century but more notably the 12 century.
Lots of beautiful stained glass windows and social distancing etc plans working well.

Sadly in line with most churches this was closed when we wanted to visit. It seems a shame that the CofE cannot be more open!

We enjoyed Mass here on the Sunday morning. Lovely welcome and all covid secure. Beautiful church, with amazing stained glass windows.

Small window with pelican we spotted. Also good carved wooden boss heads inside. The exterior tower is interesting.

On the outskirts of Alnwick near the castle, this is a large and very impressive church. Most of the building is C15th and it has the typical squat Northumbrian square tower at the south west corner. It is unusual as the side aisles stretch the length of the church, making the chancel area as wide as the nave.
It is an interesting church with a lot to see and admire. There is a leaflet picking out the main points of interest from the C13th grave slabs at the back of the church and C14th effigies in the south aisle. At the back of the nave is a small lancet window with a fragment of C14th stained glass with a pelican plucking her breast to feed her young.
The nave pillars have glorious carved capitals with angels holding shields and a frieze of fruit and leaves. The carved choir stalls date from the C19th restoration.
When I visited, workmen were removing the front few rows of pews in the nave to be replaced by chairs which can be moved to create more open space for events.

We were exploring the town early on Sunday morning while we could have the streets more or less to ourselves. We'd just stopped to look at St Michael's when an elderly gentleman called from his car that the church was open as he'd just come from early service.
In we went and were made most welcome and provided with a leaflet so that we could better appreciate the various features of the interior. I'm not a Christian so we didn't stay for the next sitting of the service but I know we'll be welcome to take another look around next time we're in town.

This beautiful church which lies on the outskirts of the town is well worth visiting. It is a listed building whose origins date from Saxon times and it has been splendidly rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries. I have been to services in the church and recently to a concert which was excellent set in the fine surroundings of this beautiful place of worship.
