If you’re not a hiker, and these optimistic depictions of a four hour walk up to a cliff top and back seem too rosy, here’s a more realistic depiction.

The first hour, there aren’t really views, just trees. It starts out level, then goes up and up until, a few minutes after you’ve resigned yourself to two hours of nothing but climbing up steps, it levels out. Then you go downhill. Because if you went only uphill, there wouldn’t be enough steps to climb.

Once you reach the halfway point, which you’ll notice because there’s a sign, it gets better. Still steps, going down, then up, then down, then up again, but it feels more worthwhile. Partly because there’s much better views. And once you get to the lookout at the end, the view is even better.

Then the way back is just the same thing in reverse! Which means that last hour is now mostly downhill, a pretty good cool-down. You can cool down even further with the traditional beach swim at the end.

I’m not going to say the view is worth the walk, because that’s entirely subjective, but it is pretty good, and if you’re early enough you can see wildlife like echidnas out as well.

This is a lovely 4 hour return walk from the Fortescue Bay carpark which you access from the Arthur Highway - it is 12kms on a dirt road. Drive carefully if wet. The walk consists of a lot of steps but the views are worth it. The track is well formed and easy to walk on but you need to have some fitness for the steps. You need to have a parks pass.

Magnificent views of ocean, rock columns, cliffs and humpback whales breaching. Very well maintained tracks. Amazing experience, and free once you have a National Parks pass.

As someone who isn't an experience bushwalker nor particularly fit (our daily exercise consist of taking the dog for 2 x 30min walks on flat land and some rowing throughout the week), this was a punishing 4 hours return trek however the views along the way were definitely worth it. We even managed to catch a few seals lounging on the rock formations at the end of the trek.

Would I punish myself again? Possibly.

We purchased our Parks Pass online days before which allowed us to directly drive the 12km of National Park dirt road to the Fortescue Bay boat ramp car park to begin the track. We noticed an office on site though.

The start of the track is literally next to the boat ramp.

The first hour is through bush on a well prepared track and solid stone steps. The work that has been put into the track was impressive. It is definitely a track walk and not a bush walk.

The second phase took longer as we were constantly admiring the many stunning views and trying to capture the expanse in photos. Panorama was a good option.

Today the water was like glass and we watched kayaks, fishing boats and tour boats move around the cliff base. These helped give a true sense of the distance between us atop the cape and the water below.

There is seating and viewing points along the way. There are many many steps but the views are worth it.

Don’t be fooled, if you are not fit, this walk will challenge you. Over 4,500 steps for the 10km return hike. However, if you’re brave enough the scenery is breathtaking.

This hike had lots of stairs, but worth it with views most of the way.
The track is right next to the mill creek campground where we stayed!
Great lookout at the end!
Very worth it!

It’s a lovely speccy hike to Cape Hauy. There’s the totem pole at the end - a target for keen rock climbers..

was my first walk and prolly one of hardest trails i did/the difficulty is thT there are mAny stairs ups and downs - the road is well paved tho
I really love the part that extends into the tasman sea and u get to breathe in the sea breeze
We started late (2pm and by the time we reached the open area - sun has set and it starting hailing?!) but it was such a fun experience walking back in the dark with just torchlights! Be sure to do that only in a Group tho!
Estimated time to complete the whole trail to and fro is 4-5h!! So be prepared with your gear when it turns cold!!
