A bit underwhelming...I'm glad I can say we've now seen it but it's not as impressive you'd expect considering it's link to most of our childhood memories & the iconic Aussie poem.
The shop was busy and sold a good selection of local souvenirs. The apple farm next door was good for grabbing some local produce if you were after a road trip snack.

A good spot to stretch the legs but my wife and kids not fans. Maybe as the song loses popularity or familiarity at least the draw of the site is becoming less. The dog certainly is a lot smaller than you’d expect. It’s the perfect spot though while travelling to take a break and refuel.

If the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council is seriously interested in promoting tourism in their region, then they ought to provide a public toilet facility at the Dog on the Tuckerbox. That would provide a fair chance of a clean, hygienic facility. As it is at present, we assume the toilets are provided by the private operators of the tourism shop. They are simply filthy, disgusting, and close to the worst we have ever been in. Not good enough!
We recommend that if you must visit the Dog on the Tuckerbox (it is really pretty tacky and missable), then at least avoid the toilets.

The ownership of The Dog On The Tuckerbox shop & amenities has changed since my last review. The new owners have spent a lot of time creating a welcoming atmosphere with local produce and goods and are always friendly. I now always stop here and recommend them to anyone and please support them and the local businesses.

Ok, so they had been busy for lunch, but the sandwich technician didn’t need to be so stroppy and throwing my sandwich at me and overcharging me then throwing the change at me didn’t do anything to improve either of our days. I had been through the day before and had excellent service with exactly the same sandwich, so I knew how much it should cost. When I asked for avocado on it, the avo was not mashed but came as a hard bell put in the middle of the bread. When I asked if it could please be mashed, the sandwich technician began her tantrum. Sad really.

I suppose you have to work with what you have got - having heard about this spot for my entire 56 years I was intrigued to visit and see what the fuss was all about - well disappointing to say the least - I have now se it and done that- I just don’t know why - nice staff good food and much better than the service station options along the highway- but frankly I don’t understand how this place has become ledgend a big let down for me .

Have not stopped for years and have just thundered past! On this trip we needed to do a driver change, so thought why not? And glad we did. It's looking a bit tired and the debate is still on as to if its 5 or 9 mile, but in the end it's a good yarn & a piece of Aussie folklore. The little shop needs all the visitors they can get otherwise it will disappear for good! We all need to take a break from driving to be alert & safe, so why not pick a novelty stop??

The ‘Dog on the Tucker Box’ is a curious and historic monument and tourist attraction, located at Snake Gully about 5 miles from Gundagai. It’s one of those strange monuments that many Australias will be vaguely familiar with, as it’s well-embedded into Australian folklore, poetry and song.
It’s actually a small statue of a dog sitting on a bushman’s food box (his ’tucker box’). Its inspiration supposedly came from a poem which was written in the late 1850s which mentions a dog sitting on a tuckerbox five miles from the small town of Gundagai. However, later poems mention a dog sitting on a tucker box nine miles from Gundagai. So there’s quite a bit of mystery to it all, a bit of controversy, and a bit of uncertainty.
The actual statue of the dog on the tucker box was unveiled in 1932. It was originally set up to assist Gundagai Hospital with funds, and today it still helps the hospital’s vital work with monies from its wishing well. For many decades the curious monument has been celebrated in song and story, and faithfully commemorates the efforts of the European pioneers who settled in this region. Over the years there’s been moves to relocate it to nine miles from Gundagai, but it appears the monument remains faithful to the original poem on 1857.
It’s located on the Hume Highway, the main highway which links Melbourne and Sydney, on a lay-by that it well signed (though exiting and re-entering the highway requires some care). And yes, it’s five miles from Gundagai.
It’s worth stopping off for a bit of a look. It’s looking good after some restoration after vandalism. The statue is the prominent feature of the site, which also incorporates a cafe and souvenir / gift shop (both seriously overpriced), toilet facilities, and picnic tables in the grassy area behind the statue. There’s also the wishing well at the base of the statue for your donation to the Gundagai Hospital. You will also find a colourful information board which explains the folklore relating to the site, and also a reference to the 1938 poem of Jack Moses which has the tucker box placed nine miles from Gundagai. Curiously enough, just a few steps from the statue, you'll find another statue of a tucker box, but minus the dog. It's the perfect instagram opportunity for you if you are travelling with your dog. Place your dog on the tucker box and snap and post away. The concept is fabulous in its simplicity!
I can guarantee that many Australians will leave the spot with a tune rattling around in their heads: “There’s a track winding back to an old-fashioned shack, Along the road to Gundagai”.

Hi,
The Tucker Box statue is outside and you can park there, no problem. Regarding the shop opening times you need to contact the owners.
