What an interesting museum, so much to see. My grandsons were fascinated by the typewriter and telephone! The older one worked his way through the question sheet (with a little help from grandad) and the youngest grandson had fun hiding and telling us all to be quiet! Then he found the tablet downstairs in the library and had fun drawing lots of pictures.
Thank you to the lovely lady who explained the story behind the oldest exhibit.
Well worth a visit.

After taking a walk along the Montgomery canal when the weather eased up, I dropped in to see Powysland. This little town museum shares its building with the library, so I browsed both while there. There are quite steep steps leading up to it (it's on the first floor), but there is a lift available (you just need to ask the staff first).
It reminds me very much of my local volunteer-run museum where I live; free-entry, with a floor packed to the brim with artifacts representing life in the area during the War. Little museums like these are special and worth protecting: you can really tell that love and effort were put into the exhibits. My favourite was on our technology - a smartphone next to a rotary phone, camera equipment, photo albums, and a prompt to think of our favourite app and what we would've needed to use back then. Instagram - a camera, developing equipment, a projector? It's so easy to forget how far we've really come!
The library is small but well-stocked; the Welsh-language books have their own section. I didn't have time to sit and read (and as a non-resident, I can't borrow anything) but it gave me some ideas to stock my Goodreads shelves.
Definitely worth popping in if you're on a walk along the canal. The library doesn't have cafe facilities, public loos or seating areas (unless you don't mind the benches outside) but what it does have is a good rainy-day activity to do, either with or without kids. Recommended.

This is an excellent little museum, beautifully curated in sections and with a wide-ranging selection of items spanning pre-history to the 20th Century. I only wish we'd had more time.
Unfortunately, the museum is not dog-friendly, and as there is a Tripadvisor review from 2018 stating that it is, we had brought our excellently behaved Golden Retriever along. Consequently, my husband and I had to dash separately around the museum whilst the other one stood sadly outside in the drizzle with the dog. I completely accept that dogs are not always welcome in such places (although we have been to many with her) but please could the museum put something very clear on the website to say so? We had travelled a fair distance to get there and had to trawl reviews to gather dog friendly status - only to find that it wasn't accurate.

This small museum is packed with plenty of artefacts covering a number of aspects of local life. The lady on reception when we visited on a Friday afternoon was most helpful, and we spent a very pleasant 90 minutes there. Even better it was free to enter - donations at the visitor's discretion.

This is an interesting museum. Not terribly large but lots of local interest packed in. My wife was looking for some local particulars relating to her family history. The lady working there went and searched out some relevant information and provided it to us. The weather was rather dull and wet outside but we had a great couple of hours inside. many thanks

When we first entered the museum, the staff was very welcoming but the museum didn’t look like it would take long to walk through and theat there would be little of interest. Wrong!! What a neat museum with World War I artifacts and local histories of citizens in the war. A history of when the county was a thriving clothing and sewing area.
2 nd floor had archaeological exhibits and histories of the areas railroads and canals..And to top it all off...it’s free.

Visited here after travelling by train from Llanfair Caereinion to Welshpool by narrow gauge. Saw the museum by the canal, admission was free. Not a big building, but the quality of articles they have is very very impressive, covers a lot of time eras, has an interesting archaeological section as well.My own interest had a very good collection of grandfather clocks made locally , well worth a visit
