Big history for a small town! Good for all ages. Many signs explaining the importance and history of the boats in this area. If possible catch the Batteaumen River Race that is offered every June. There is a monument that depicts the flood levels in years past. Some were so high, it's a wonder it ever receded! There is no charge for this site. Upon completion of your tour, there are quaint shops to visit and nice places to eat.

The whole canal and lock story is lost but this little town did a great job highlighting the story with the outdoor museum.

Loved the boats and the location. Being so close to the river and great food made for a perfect trip with the kids

We stopped here while out driving and started with the levee walk. There are nice placards and exhibits telling the history of this area and how it was changed by the James River, the Kanawa canal, flooding, and transportation. The exhibits have some really interesting old photographs and there is a really eye-opening monument to the flooding depths recorded.

This area can be viewed after a nice dinner at the James River Tavern or a day on the river kayaking or tubing. Just a short walk from either. It is nicer in spring or fall, but enjoyable year round and very informative if you want to know more about how the canals played a pivotal part in the making of the country before railroad. It is well done and you can see a real bateau.

Self tour, easy to follow. Extremely informative!! This poor town has literally been underwater because of flooding many times. Pictures, a Batteau boat and a monument showing water depth. This town, Scottsville, Virginia is so sweet. It will not disappoint.

A lot of work has gone into researching and displaying the history of river traffic on the James. This is a special place!

Very well done local and really early national history. I knew there were canals going up the James River but did not know how extensive it was.

This is a nicely done exhibit showing river transportation facts and history on the Canal that ran to Scottsville from Richmond. There is some seating and public restrooms here. Not a huge exhibit but lots of facts to read. It is across the street from the Scottville History Museum, although closed when we're passing through this trip, we have seen before. Also, if you walk up through this small but quaint town, you can find flood markers on one of the buildings.

This is a self guided walk thru museum. There are pictures to view, boats to see and detailed writings to explain everything.
