This is an impressive building, standing on its own as historic depots go. Museum inside is well organized and orderly, to the point of feeling a bit empty for such a large building (as opposed to some museums that are stuffed to the gills with railroad memorabilia). There are toy trains here as well - but also a fairly small setup.

This is a well-kept, well-organized little museum that would interest anyone who cares about Wisconsin history or railroad history. The volunteers were friendly and helpful and it was definitely worth the $6 admission fee.

The museum is housed in a limestone building constructed in the mid-19th century by stonemasons from Cornwall. This building is said to be the oldest standing railroad depot in Wisconsin. Displays tell the story of Mineral Point as a center for zinc and lead mining, and the importance of Mineral Point as a railroad town. On the second floor, accessible only by a long, steep stairway (there is no elevator), is an awesome scale diorama of Mineral Point showing the depot and adjacent buildings and mines. Automated trains and other vehicles move around the diorama.

This museum is setup for many ages to enjoy. Great treatment of the history of the area and times with artifacts, replication of offices of the day.

staffed by a very knowledgeable volunteer this is a wonderful place to visit. VERY clean and well planned out, the upstairs train diorama was fascinating. Plan on about 45 - 60 min.

Thought this was a great little railroad depot museum. So much history to read & I especially loved looking at all of the pictures. The scale model of the railroad yard was fascinating...you could look at it & picture where everything was many years ago. Probably could of spent more time here but we had other places we wanted to visit on that Sunday afternoon.

Great little Museum. The town has done a great job of restoring the building. The community has donated a lot of historical items to make the place even more interesting.

During our recent stay in Mineral Point, we were drawn to this lovely little depot museum - and we're SO glad we stopped in! The restoration of the building is beautiful, and the artifacts and photos - and also, the scale model of the Mineral Point rail yard - are fascinating and educational. Even someone like me, who comes from a railroading family (3 generations), learned a few things! :) The host was also very friendly, and we enjoyed learning more about the region and the village from him. This museum is well worth a stop, if you love nostalgia and history - and of course, trains and industry.

We found this museum very interesting as my husband worked for a railroad years ago and sold off surplus property and old depots for the Illinois Central and Gulf Railroad. We always go see old railroad depots during our travels and Mineral Point's depot is special. Besides being probably the oldest in Wisconsin, we have never seen one with such a unique staircase at the top of the second floor. Now that is really cool.
This museum had so much to read and learn about and so many pictures of the depot from years ago. So much work was put into this museum, thank you to everyone who participated and especially to those who donated items.
One thing I would suggest is that on special occasions, such as "Fall Art Tour" that it be a free exhibit to draw more people to it. After they see it and how great it is, they will tell others and you will get more paying guests on other days. Just a thought.

Our volunteers have invested so much time and heart into restoring the depot and maintaining the museum so hearing such nice comments from the community is very gratifying. Your comment about the staircase is also well taken: the staircase is 1856 original and part of the original building's charm.

Hello and thank you for your interest. We are a non-profit museum and do not have a mandatory admission price. But we ask for a $4 donation per adult and welcome accompanied small children without seeking a donation. We also work with tour groups and can set up a private visit with one or more tour hosts if you have a larger group - potentially on a day that we would not otherwise be open (subject to host availability).
