A multi-use two-story theatre built by Architects Davis & Fishbournein in 1925 in the Beaux-Arts style, with a parapet and balustrade running along the top of the building. It closed for a while due to lack of public support, but in 1998 it reopened as an art house, with a restored lobby and cafe serving refreshments during events. The wonderfully decorative proscenium frames the stage, making it visible to all the theaters seating. Our seats were a little to the left of the stage and with the sloped floor everything was in perfect view. As it was local High school jazz bands performance, and they were very good. There is a large Wurlitzer pipe organ in the theater, but it was not use at this performance.

Not air-conditioned, best in the winter to go see a movie. Very impressed with the variety of films at The Palace.

Located on a side street just off the ocean from it downtown Hilo, this cinema is like stepping back in time. It may lack state of the art surround sound however it more than makes up for this in character. The location also offers special artistic events from time to time.
The cashier was friendly and the whole experience was delightful. There are discount prices for seniors and students.

If there's a movie here, do it. It's a wonderful piece of history and the theater is small but good. There's a lot of history here, I highly recommend exploring the downstairs area and it's old styled

If you happen to be in Hilo when the Palace Theatre is running a silent movie night, treat yourself to a great experience and go.
The original score is played live on the pipe organ, so it is just like it would have been almost 100 years ago when originally screened.
The players enthusiasm and skill brings an already great movie to life.
We saw The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Lon Chaney Jr..
It was a great night out in downtown Hilo.

We are often in Hilo but it seems never when anything is going on at the Palace. This time we found an actual movie to go see! The Hero staring Sam Elliott. (Aside, terrific movie!) I was like stepping back into the past. I watched Saturday morning serials and cartoons here back in the 50's. What a trip! Muscle memory took us right to the seating area where I sat for these Saturday morning adventures. A double feature and cartoons for 25 cents. What a deal!
The old girl is in need of some work despite the massive efforts that have already been poured into the space. Next on their list it seems is air conditioning.
Definitely worth a stop even if you're not reminiscing.

Hilo community members have made a concerted effort to restore this 1920's movie palace in order to offer both movies and live performances at this landmark building. The building offers architectural features which were well ahead of their time such as "stadium seating" and excellent natural acoustics. I attended a performance by ULTIMI, a vocal ensemble of three tenors and was astonished at the tonal quality that the space offered. The performers brought their best and the theatre gave their voices premier staging.
An added feature of this lovely venue is the snack bar which offers the usual movie fare at reasonable prices.
While the upgrades are ongoing, visitors should be aware that as yet the theatre does not have central air conditioning. A fund drive is working to accomplish this modernization in the near future.
While visiting Hilo Town, definitely include an evening at the Palace, for years the "grandest theatre of all the neighboring islands."

Very nice to see such a beautiful old theatre, really beats the modern no character place. Still need lots of work but the committee will get there in time. It will be something special when it gets finished
