I give this five stars because we did a horseback riding trip through the valley. Otherwise it’s a long STEEP hike. Remember what goes down must come up. Or you can very cautiously and slowly drive 4 wheel drive down and not enjoy the view because you are focused on the road. And, at the bottom, it’s mostly private land so you can’t just march over to the falls. Either be prepared for a serious hike, enjoy the falls from the easy to get to lookout (nice place for a picnic), or do a horseback tour.

Saw this by mistake while walking down to the ocean at Wailoi Lookout. As other reviews said, very steep! A MUST do it you are at all fit. Definitely wouldn’t do if I had joint problem. A lady with asthma was struggling. We are a bit above average fitness, found it tough, but totally worth it. You cannot get right next to the falls, this is best pic.

Saw the falls during our visit but not too dramatic. Best during Rainier seasons. Would be much more dramatic.

Take Hwy 19 to park at the Waipio Valley Lookout.( Don't bother with Mud Ln). The ranger there can give you more info. Myself and my 12 yr olds walked down the 25% grade of street while my friends drove their jeep. There is a car rail that helps to hold onto while you walk down- it is steep but fun. Amazing views. Bird singing. 20 min walk down to the fork. Go left to see the falls. Go right to see the black sand beach. It took us 40 mins to walk up from the beach (average speed, average fitness level). Definitely worth the effort. Only 4x4 vehicles allowed down the road. I would do this again. Very beautiful.

Beautiful twin falls 450" a short walk from the base of Waipio Valley. Reminds us of how valuable our water resources are and how finite.

Stunning waterfalls which you can see if you descend onto the Waipo Valley floor but please see separate reviews for Waipo Valley as you will need either 4WD or be prepared for a long steep hike! However, definitely a must do trip while on Big Island as both the falls and the black sand beach are amazing to see!

The "other" side of the big island of Hawaii. A short drive from Waikoloa or Waimea. The coastal "Kona" side is plains like with low vegetation and rocky surface the "Hilo" side is tropical and dense with forest. Such a spectacular island and you do not want to miss this little adventure. To reach this are you will need a 4X4 or your hiking shoes and bottled water due to steep grades. I would also recommend a "tour" .

In the course of driving from Hilo to Kona we decided to take in every waterfall along the way. There are many by the way. This particular one if super nice for a couple of reasons. You go through a neat little cowboy town and the site has bath and water facilities plus a very nice place to stand and take pictures and be amazed by the absolutely gorgeous view of the valley, black sand beach, and the falls. Be aware that Hawaii is going through a drought, even with their sporadic showers, so you may not see as many waterfalls as on all the ads etc.
The parking there is $5 and limited so some folks park all along the street right outside the parking area and that makes for a bit of congestion. There are some beautiful shrubs and trees to the right of the bathrooms which fols use for a sweet backdrop to family photos.
Lastly there are shuttles down to the valley but honestly if you are on a limited times schedule you can take in all the beauty of this amazing area by standing at the top and waiting for all the others to move so that you can take some super pics

If you walk in, the road down is at a 25% grade and you must step out of the way when a 4x4 comes by with very little room on either side. If you drive down, the grade requires only 4x4 vehicles, not AWD or less. This is a steep grade to be taken seriously, whether walking or driving.
Once at the bottom, you split to the left and only a short way in you will see these stunning waterfalls from a distance. this area is private property throughout, so you do not get close, but even from afar they are gorgeous.
The walk back up is very difficult and only able bodied ppl should attempt.

These falls are super beautiful. You can't get up close because you would be going onto private property, but even from far away, the waterfall is beautiful, as well as the mountains around it.

Are there any tours that take you to the base of the falls?

We saw a group of people horse riding towards the falls, so I guess yes.
But check online before you go as all land there is private and not allowed to trespass ...

Is there a family friendly tour? We'd like to take a side by side at ride that's safe for children to join as passengers.

We'll be at the Hapuna Prince and want to do a hike so I came across the Hillawe Falls as closer than driving 8 hours to the Volcano National Park. Is the only way to see this via an ATV or can one just hike on their own?
