DANGER!!! Pit bulls and wild dogs!!!
We had a horrifying experience! We got the permit and there was no mention in the disclaimer we had to sign or from the woman at Hawaii reserves about dangerous dogs!!!
We took our friends medium sized dog with us and on the private road met a local who warned us to hike with a stick due to wild dogs. We then passed the house with three huge pit bulls and upon further reading of reviews, these dangerous dogs have bitten hikers before. Luckily they were chained but still within 15 feet growling and barking and pulling on their chains.
We did the hike, didn’t quite make the falls due to time and were just coming back to where the trail meets the private road when a huge dog (pit bull/Great Dane cross) comes running toward us in attack mode. Luckily my partner is very tall and challenged him with the huge fence post we’d been carrying the whole hike. He backed off a bit then came at us again but was again threatened away for good. We then had to walk past the 3 pit bulls again and then 300 feet from the car see two loose pit bulls roaming the street. A very kind man in a pick up let us jump in the back of his truck and drove us to our vehicle.
One of the worst experiences of my life.

Easy start at the sports ground. Just 2km at road, starting point of the trail a bit difficult to find but if you hit the trail it is easy to find the way up. A bit slippery if wet, but no worries. After a while great views down to the coast. A nice active adventure. If you want to go down to the falls, the last 200 meters are a bit a kind of climbing. But worth to do. Because it belongs to the Momorn you may register in advance as this is a kind a respect.

This tops the 4 hikes we've done across the islands. A proper hike! Permit easily got from Hawaii reserves Inc at laie shops. At a decent pace, but slowing for the final muddy section, took 1.5hrs to reach the falls. Hiking shoes made it easy going, it gets very muddy for last mile. A guy passed going down wearing toe shoes- seemed a good alternative. Loved the varied landscapes and ecosystems the trail passes, and the view back to the ocean before you descend to the falls. About 1 hr 10 to get down. So peaceful at falls, up in clouds. Stunning.

This is a very pretty hike. But, it's not for beginners. Steep, at times muddy, and long. Be sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks. Oh, and you'll also want to pick up a permit.

This trail is definitely a little more than just a hike. If you are going, be sure to bring lots of water and don't worry about snacks because there are a lot of cherry guavas everywhere. When you reach the coconut tree, your halfway there. A little disappointed when we got to the waterfall. It was a little opaque and not as clear as most waterfalls. This is more for the experienced hiker and not for a casual stroll. A few difficult areas especially in the guava forest so be prepared to slip alot and get a face full of bugs! Also a little tricky down and up from the waterfall a rope dangles for you to help your descent and ascent. The view is beautiful at the top

We started at 9am and we're back at the car by 12:15pm. It's 3.2 miles to the falls from the yellow gate. The gate will be locked but you can get by. It's uphill all the way. If you see rain clouds over the mountain, avoid the hike. We hike early to avoid the rain showers. The trail was still muddy from the last rain but not bad. We didn't slip on the trail.if it's raining, you WILL Slide around. The cook pine forest is about half way up. After the pines you enter a mile long tunnel of red bark guava trees. They made for excellent handhold on the trail.
Follow the blue ribbon you see every so often. It's a well traveled trail, you won't get lost.
About 3 miles in a sign points to the falls. Very steep and muddy. Someone had put in rope to assist working down to the falls. Stay to the left. You will first see the lower falls and go straight down, but try to stay left and go in above that waterfall.
The water is cool and really great for swimming.
Take lots of water to drink. Good hiking shoes or stiff sneakers. NO Sandals or flip flops. Park at the yellow gate after the small bridge.
It's a wonderful hike with million dollar views. It's will worth the effort to spend the morning on this hike. We were the only ones there at the falls. Passed 8 hiking up on our way out.
If you want real Hawaii... this is the hike.

We hiked in the rain but it was warm. Parts were really muddy so if it is wet bring some old shoes. It was fun with some nice views well worth the trip. No real parking available. It is in a neighbor and not a great one at that. Lock the doors and don't leave any valuables.

Great place at the top with the falls. Usually are running. Fruit to eat along the way (if you are traveling at the right time). Not very scenic on the way up ... lots to walk through.

The whole family took the hike and noone regrets it.
It took a little longer than expected, but then again, we had a child with ut.
The first part is really easy, but the view and the forest is beautiful. Later in the path gets a lot more muddy and narrow, and the last part before the falls is mud and rocks all the way. You basically have to climb down, but it is not a problem for a healthy person.
The falls are nice to see, probably not that astonishing but worth the walk (if you don't hate walking). There is room and depth to swim in the water, but not much place to sit, so don't plan any longer staying when you are there. At least not if you dont want to sit on wet rocks or in the mud.

For those who enjoyed a small hiking trip and looking at different plants and birds, this would be a great place. The area near the falls is very crowded, But taking a dip in the pond below the falls can be refreshing after all the walking.

I am curious about the do not enter signs photos you posted? Are you going across private land in order to get to the falls?

We didn't get a permit to hike here, but I can see why they want you to get one. It is not a hike for those out of shape, and it's pretty easy to get lost.
