We viewed the 1/2 hour film and checked out the displays inside. All were very interesting and well put together, making it easy to understand. We had limited time during our visit, so did a quick driving tour through the site itself.

Just visited the Antietam National Park in Sharpsburg, Maryland and was definitely impressed with the history of the battle.

It is a visit that I believe every American should make at some point in their life. To think that almost 23,000 Americans were either killed or wounded, in one day, fighting amongst each other, is unbelievable!

The National Park Service has absolutely done a phenomenal job with the driving, self guided tour.
They provide you with a map, at the main museum entrance, that guides you throughout the different battle fields. Each stop provides parking and on site photos and explanations of that particular event.

As you travel throughout the park, you will observe nothing but beauty in the landscape, which consists of rolling hills and mountains in the background. Sad to believe that such a peaceful venue was used to generate so much death and human destruction.

A definite visit if thinking about it.

This is a must do. I am amazed by how much information there is on the driving tour. We hit up many spots and stopped and walked Bloody Lane. It is amazing thinking about the history of the battlefield and how many men gave their lives in the exact location you were. There is a small museum which is very well done and super informational. It's a typical national park so there is a fee but well worth it.

If you have a choice of seeing either Antietam or Gettysburg, I would choose Antietam hands down. The battle of Antietam was not more important than the battle of Gettysburg, but I think you would enjoy the visit to Antietam, whereas Gettysburg is a little more problematic. Large crowds versus smaller crowds, more development versus less, a park staff dealing with large crowds versus a park staff not under quite as much stress, it is an easy choice.

Touring these battlefields by car was a great way to spend some time during our family girls weekend. If you like to read plaques, there is A LOT to read. We had young children with us so that wasn't in the cards for our group. We attended the ranger talk at the visitor center before doing the tour. It was about 25 minutes and informative. We didn't do the movie because the kids lost attention span. My daughter loved climbing the tower at the 2nd to last tour stop.

On our return home to Illinois from Philadelphia we took a different route so we could visit Antietam and Fort Necessity. This is a battlefield we've wanted to visit for a long time but just wasn't close enough to drive there.

It's a beautiful place. I like the winding sidewalk up to the visitor's center. It has all the dates leading up to the civil war and the battle. It reminds me of the beautiful visitor's center at Shiloh with its' winding walk full of information and parts of a soldier's kit in the concrete.

We watched the movie and then drove the route getting out and walking at several places. We are older than when we first started driving to civil war battle fields 12 years ago so we don't do as much walking as before.

This is a beautiful battlefield and well taken care of. And so significant with Lincoln being able to release his Emancipation Proclamation after the "victory" here.

Another great preserved battlefield. And so happy to see so many young families enjoying the history.

This isn’t a touristy spot. It’s a sprawling battlefield area with several posted stops which you can augment with the park service app videos that go along with each one. The visitor center artifacts are mostly removed but they have an ok movie. Lots of history here.

Beautiful Park. We visited nearby Harpers Ferry and then drove here the next morning. The NPS staff were friendly and professional. We did a self guided driving tour as the winds in the open fields were bone chilling. The park has many markers and signs to keep the driving tour easy to follow. Tons of trails -so we'll be back in warmer weather. So much history and in a pretty setting. May those who fought and died rest in peace.

MUST SEE for any civil war buff or any student of history. Very beautiful part of our country. Mostly driveable in a couple of hours but get out and walk the grounds.

We came during the last fee-free day of the year (Veterans Day) and it was a good way to introduce the children to a part of history that saw a great number of casualties, and hopefully instill in them to appreciate the freedoms they have today as it came at such a great cost.
We started out at the visitor center where the introductory film helped us see the big picture and introduced us to facts we didn't know before about this particular battle. It may our outing to the Burnside Bridge more meaningful and we appreciated the Sunken Lands more as wer visualized where the Confederates would have been and where the Union Army would be approaching. We also hung around to catch the last ranger talk for the day and he did a great job rehasing what was in the movie and adding some more details which really make history come alive. It is definitely a day well spend and a great way to honor veterans who have served in America's wars.
