To fellow tourists, in order to not get too disappointed when you get here only to find it closed, my advice is not to hope for anything. If you get to see it, lucky you; if not, think of it as having arbitrary hours and go see the National Seashore’s visitor center.
The house closed today during normal hours for “inclement weather”. It didn’t rain until 2.30 PM when I left the National Seashore, so I don’t know if it rained at all by 3.15 PM, which is when the last tour normally starts.
I managed to get them to corroborate on “inclement weather” and they said they had heavy storms last night and they try not to track mud into the house. I won’t argue that the ground wasn’t muddy when I was there, just because they can say I’m biased and don’t care about their house. I just never heard other museums using the term “inclement weather” that way.
I guess they saved me $8 at the end of the day.

History Alive! What an unexpected find. I wanted to get information on Assateague Island and saw the Rackliffe Plantation was open for tours.
You travel down a gravel, tree- lined road to get to the plantation. Parking is easy and the house not far from the grass lot. They have handicapped accessible parking, too, if needed.
The fee is $8 a person, a bargain, to learn about the family, how they lived in Pre and Post Colonial Maryland, and the almost demise of the property.
Dorothy, one of the docents, could not have been nicer. She seemed to truly love being there, welcoming visitors, and teaching others.
A great way to spend an hour. I highly recommend it!

This is a wonderfully restored historic home and garden. Outdoor plaques provide insight into its original owners and history. It is easily accessible vis a trail behind the Assateague Visitor's Center. Definitely worth a look.

First things first- don't bother using your car's GPS- it will not get you there. Look for a dim sign outside the visitor's center, and follow a gravel road through some lovely woods to the house site. It's a 1/2 mile walk each way, so bring your hiking shoes. The restored homesite overlooks a beautiful marsh. The brickwork is a mix of various styles, and the house and outbuildings look great. To my surprise, when I got out of the woods, there was a modern golf course laid out along the marsh, and golfers were walking the course.

The Rackliffe House was built in 1742 and has been restored to that period. The docents are knowledgeable, the entry fee nominal and the artifacts interesting. There is a Facebook page for dates and times open. 'Really worth checking out.

Reconstructed homestead of the Rackliff family who settled there in the 1600's. Traves the hostory for about 200 years. Hostorical interpretation of life on the homestead, farming, raising animals, and daily activities. Many decendants of slaves on this planatation are local area residents today. Very informative and enjoyable presentation by the docents. Takes about an hour for the guided tour. There is a fee.

Visited with Students from Seaside Christian Academy. This beautifully restored historic sight next to Assateague State and National Parks is a must see if you are looking for historical sites. I was so impressed with the people who led our tour. They were knowledgeable and fun. I learned a lot about the history of the Eastern Shore of Maryland on our visit. We brought students from 3rd grade through the 8th grade and they were totally fascinated. I cannot believe that I did not know about this very special place until recently. It is worth a short excursion from the beach,

It is a joy to visit this beautifully restored house on the shores of Synepuxent Bay. If you love history and buildings that remind us of our rich heritage, you will enjoy a visit to this wonderful old house that has been lovingly restored. If you are an artist there are many views that will delight you. This is one of the oldest buildings in the area and one of the most beautiful.

Having endured several generations of neglect and decay, this striking structure seemed destined to be demolished. But, thanks to the vision and resourcefulness of Tom Patton and the strenuous efforts of key community supporters, it has been beautifully restored. The interpretive process is doubtless still underway, but the staff has done an excellent job bringing the building to life. The docents are well-trained, friendly, and knowledgeable. The setting -- across a narrow bay from Assateague -- is bracing and pleasant. Children might find the visit taxing but anyone interested in the past would, I suspect, enjoy visiting here.
