We visited Congaree NP in March and the mosquito meter at the Visitor Center said “all clear.” We were comfortable with the temps, wearing a jacket for a morning walk along the boardwalks. The crowds were not large so we had ample time and space to enjoy our visit here. They had some great post cards in the gift shop. Be sure to watch the film in the visitor center … it helps you understand the treasure of this place. We saw an owl, a few birds, and a number of squirrels on the day we were here. It is not the busy place the larger national parks can be, but that made it enjoyable. We spent at least 2 hours here and then headed to the coast.

My wife and I went to the Congaree National Park for the first time, but can’t wait to return. It’s is somewhat remote but well worth it and no fees to explore. The visitor’s center has helpful friendly people. ( Ray and Patrick) at the checkin desk. The beauty of this place is beyond words. Some trees are over 150’ feet tall and the trails and boardwalk are in excellent shape. We walked over 2 1/2 miles and saw No Trash or litter! The wetlands are really superb and beyond words. We look forward to returning!

Today the weather was beautiful. The birds were playfully enjoying the day, Squirrels frolicked through the forest. The boardwalk trail was a delight. The change in foliage was very noticeable in a stride. The visitor center is a must see. The video help explain the ecosystem’s we were getting ready to see.

A very interesting national park. It is small but there were lots of people visiting. A unique environment worth experiencing.

This is quite a nice place to spend an afternoon. We enjoyed walking through the old growth forest both on the boardwalk and the wilderness trails. The walking is very easy but many trails currently have been blocked by fallen trees from the last storm.

We have been to many national parks but never found a reason to combine Congaree on a trip. Found a reason, thankfully, and it was unique. We took several hikes, enjoyed the visitor's center and, most instructive and enjoyable, kayaked on the river with a guide. Very peaceful, interesting, informative and relaxing. Not the hordes of shutter-bugging visitors afflicting so many other parks. You can really step back, take a breath and enjoy.

Great overlooked park. Lots of record breaking trees. Do your homework before you go so you know what you're looking at. Peaceful, relaxed, easily accessible boardwalk trail. Wish we had time to take in more of the back country.

We had a great experience at the National Park. Very easy to get to by car just outside of Columbia. A very nice visitor center with super friendly and helpful staff is located at the start of the Boardwalk trail which I highly recommend as a start to your visit. It's elevated and easy to walk in most conditions and gives you great views of many aspects of the park. You can also branch off and try several relatively easy trails. While you don't get much elevation change the mud and humidity can tire you out so plan accordingly. Wildlife is everywhere especially beautiful spiders, deer turtles and birds. The Bald cypress trees are the star of the park and get the photos they are rightly icons, but I think the loblolly pines are great as well. You can find several majestic specimens towering over everything else in the area. Do plan ahead when visiting the park as your enjoyment of the trails can be greatly affected by the weather. This is a swamp so there is frequent flooding and mud. Finally the mosquito is a terror. Bug spray is helpful but consider a mosquito net for your hat and wear sleeves and jeans especially in early summer when they seem to be at their worst.

Free to enter and enjoy the wide variety of trees. The history from the Revolutionary War here was interesting. We paid our entrance fee in mosquito bites instead of $ though.

Bring the bug spray and water for the summer. A quiet location. We did the boardwalk trail in late afternoon and saw lots of interesting flora and fauna. There is a guide paper that talks about different items along the route. Very informative but needs to be updated.

In October do u need bug spray hiking in Congaree NP?
Escrita el 28 de septiembre de 2022
Anywhere you are in the Southern United States, particularly where there is water, there will be mosquitos most every time of year except maybe January and February.
Escrita el 15 de octubre de 2022
Hello! Was wondering what congaree is like in very early April. Are there any buds/leaves on trees? Is it a nice time to visit for scenery? Or will it take longer into the spring to get leaves? If anyone has visited around this time I’d love to hear your experience.
Escrita el 17 de enero de 2022
I was there in the fall so I am not qualified to answer that question. Strongly suggest that you phone the visitor center directly and speak with a park ranger. They will gladly answer a multitude of questions for you.

We are going to be in the area in July and I was interested in what the conditions might be like. I would love to take my boys hiking. Would it be miserable? We have learned to treat our clothing with Premetherin due to mosquitos in Michigan and Minnesota, it’s the heat and humidity that concerns me.
Escrita el 31 de octubre de 2020
It will be very hot 🥵 July is probably one of our hottest months here. Bring lots of water. The good thing is that the trails are along a route with lots of trees that will protect you from direct sunlight. With the high humidity we have wear loose clothes that can breathe or you’ll sweat right through them. Also take into mind when they say temperature mid 90’s, That means the heat index with humidity put the feel like temperatures in the low 100’s. If you can beat the heat, come out have fun and enjoy the Congaree Trail and remember they have a really nice visitor center with air conditioning to cool off.

Reading all the warnings about needing bug spray. Is it usually bad into September? We’re visiting mid-September. If we use Deet and mosquito netting, long sleeves etc will we still get major bites? Sounds like there’s no preventing bites and I’m usually highly susceptible!

Hello! Congaree National Park will be an enjoyable visit for you. Make sure you spend time in the visitor Center.
In regards to bugs, an insect repellent with 20 - 30% Deet should work fine and wearing long-sleeved shirts will be helpful. The park will be more humid at that time; however, still enjoyable. Time you visit for the morning hours and check to see if they have a Ranger Program planned for the day.

Kayaking here soon from Cedar Creek Landing. Is it easy to get lost while on the water? As in are there points where you have to choose between going left or right as in a fork on the creek? Kayaking alone and worried about getting lost!
Escrita el 16 de noviembre de 2019
Cedar Creek is a marked paddling trail but it is easy to get lost when water levels are above about 7 feet. Go to the park's website and check out the information on the canoe trail page. You can access water level charts as well as a guide that tells you what you can expect at different water levels.

Can someone recommend a kayak outfitter for Congaree that will haul the kayaks and pick us up at the end?

River Runner Outdoor Center is an approved guide service that operates tours within the park boundaries. I have used their guide services and rentals and recommend them highly. You can find them on the web or on Facebook or reach them at (803) 771-0353.

For those that have done the ranger canoe trip - how did you get tickets?! I’ve been trying since it opened for the spring season on March 1, but everything says sold out. Even they days that aren’t crossed though are saying sold out. Do they sell out in minutes? Did you buy them as soon as the season opened? Gonna try for fall now!
Escrita el 31 de marzo de 2019
The tickets literally sell out within a few minutes. You need to be logged on to your recreation.gov account, have your credit card right in front of you, and rush like a crazy person to complete your transaction—it’s your only hope! If you have more than one person in your party who can try for tickets, that improves your chances. We did the trip today, and it was worth all the effort! Good luck!

When is the best time of the year to visit the park.
Are the parkranger led canoetrips available yearround?
Thanks,

We visited in late January. The weather was wonderful. The park is pretty shaded and it is not that big. We probably spent a little over an hour because the guide was very interested in telling us about the plants and the geology.

What is the least crowded night of the week to see the fireflies in May/June?

I would advise you to contact the park headquarters. There is a place on the website to contact the staff. They responded to my questions promptly and efficiently.
