We visited the museum after seeing the first part of the Rising Sun Exhibit at the Academy of Art. A spectacular exhibit devoted to expressions answering the question as to whether the sun is rising or setting on the American experiment. For us, the most searching and interesting of the exhibits was the last we saw: The Question Bridge at the African-American. Four artists developed questions, answered by African-American males who are shown on multiple televised panels. We also especially enjoyed the works by Dread Scott, Hank Willis Thomas and Mark Thomas Gibson. The exhibit has been extended -- for good reason. Must see if you are in Philadelphia

I took an African American history class at Temple during the fall 2022 and I happened to pay attention and show up to class and the professor became one of my number one fans!! I know you have no idea what that means but he gave me a 100 on my final paper and then wrote a recommendation for me where he said I build bridges between people and also he gave me 10 dollars once and said to get lunch on him!! He made me very interested in African American history and so I’ve been trying to learn more!! I watch a lot of videos of Malcolm X and I wrote papers and Marcus Garvey and WEB Dubois but I don’t know that much about the first half of African American history!! They had a lot of things here about the black dudes during the 17770s through the 1860s!! It had videos of dudes that pretended to be historical people and you can click buttons to learn different things about them!! I will come back here a lot of times!!

This museum will move in a few years to a new site. Imagine school groups come and it could be great for kids. There is a lot of content. It is not as rich as the NMAAHC in Wash, DC, but good nonetheless.

Arrived at 10.15 am (museum opens at 10) on a 10 to 12 timed ticket reserved in advance. A bit after 11 was firmly told by a guard to leave and that I could come back after noon “once the CoVID cleaning process would be done”.

At no moment did I see on the web site or was told at check in of this…

Very disappointed to see my 14$ admission so poorly utilized.

From the limited time spent was not much impressed either. Not a lot of useful displays…

Went next door to the National Constitution Center and had a great experience especially around their exhibit on the long struggle to see slavery abolished, Jim Crow then fight for civil rights… continuing to today.
Same price but much richer content and experience!

Even watching and reading every single exhibit all the way through, I only spent about an hour here. The top floor is closed right now—I’m assuming for the new exhibit coming later this month (which I would love to see).

The basement has a few photos from the civil rights era.

The first floor has an interesting collage? Mural? of many figures and events from black history. There is an audio component that takes you through multiple facets of a black person’s life—home, family, religion, politics etc. there is a large semicircular surface that has short explanations for all of the photos included in the collage. It’s very different from what most are used to—one photo and one placard. This is presented as an amalgam of works and little tiny micro explanations. It may be off putting for some, but it’s very creative and unique.

The second floor has some displays that play videos of actors playing historical black figures. You can push various buttons (with your feet, it’s been adapted to covid times) and hear about their lives and trials as black people.

Folks on site were nice. Price was 14.00. Not the biggest or fanciest, but creative and interesting.

Because of timed visits, we weren't able to take it all in, & that's disappointing. Gallery 2 was incredible .

This is a very important museum to visit, especially with the president we currently have. It is essential to keep informed about slavery and the injustices of black people today in the US. Worth a visit.

We went to tour downtown to visit the sites. We went to the Visitor’s Center specifically for directions for thePhiladelphia African American Museum. The guides were helpful but we were limited for time. Our family took the map and walked briskly to 6th & Arch street in Center City Philadelphia. We didn’t have to pay any entrance fees due to some renovations. The lady at the entrance was so patient with my questions, l was able to purchase a calendar. The walls of the power point presentations are amazing explaining Slavery, in America and abroad. It also shows our cultural struggles for equality in getting better jobs, housing and the right to vote. All types of cultures were in our museum sharing. It made me more grateful and proud to be an African American in
America.

We decided to visit during Black History Month on a Saturday. We assumed there would be special events and/or exhibits. Unfortunately, there were none and the museum didn't make up for it. It saddens me to write this but it needs tremendous help. There's no flow or progression of history. It was random information that appeared to be specific to Philadelphia and we walked away confused. Information is too disjointed and alot of text throughout the museum was in very small font that made it hard to read. Honestly, they need a total refresh of decor and history exhibits, specifically themes with a continuous progression. The museum in its current shape should be free.
