Do it. Do it. Do it. My sister located this slightly hidden gem, and I was sure it would be fun, but it ended up being a highlight of our trip to Philly! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and we got to go all over the place in the hospital and see so many cool things. Just know that they only offer tours on limited days at limited times!

We arrived at UPenn emergency room at 12:00 noon. It is now 4:15AM and my brother in law has yet to be brought back to be seen by a Dr.
He has had blood work a chest X-ray and a CT scan that was ordered through triage, and has been sitting in the over crowded emergency room with NO INFORMATION forthcoming of when he will be seen!
FURTHERMORE, we, my husband and I were sitting in the EMPTY lobby waiting news since noontime and we’re just asked to leave that area because only people waiting for someone having surgery were allowed to sit there! I explained to him that the “waiting area” for visitors had hard plastic chairs and that we were just sitting there disturbing NO ONE, but he still threw us out! DISGUSTING and TERRIBLE!!
You don’t treat dogs this way!! I give U Penn a big fat ZERO!

Please note THIS IS FOR THE HISTORIC TOUR. I have never been a patient at this hospital.
If you search for Pennsylvania hospital on the internet, you’ll find an option for historical tours. There is a number to call, but ultimately that number will play a voicemail that will give you another number, which leads you to Stacy, one of the librarians.
Stacy was responsive and kind, and a great communicator. She contacted me quickly and went the extra mile to match me up with a volunteer guide, Walker, who was also great.
Walker met me at the hospital and took me to the original sections, which were built in Ben Franklin’s time. Pennsylvania hospital was the first hospital established in the United States!
The architecture is beautiful. The library is gorgeous and has volumes that are a couple hundred years old. You get to see the original operating theater, which is surreal. Walker provided many enlightening facts about medical care and the hospital during its early years.
You can only access this unique opportunity through the librarian department and volunteers. It is free, but I tipped my guide generously.
Lasts about an hour. Very worthwhile to see this foundational piece of history.

Pennsylvania Hospital is one of the oldest in the country, founded by Benjamin Franklin himself in 1751. It also was America's fist surgical amphitheater where the public could watch live surgeries... wow!!!

Pennsylvania Hospital offers a free, guided historical tour of the nation's first chartered hospital. Highlights include the historic medical library, surgical amphitheatre and Benjamin West's painting, "Christ Healing the Sick in the Temple". Our tour guide was energetic, passionate and knowledgeable. This tour is a can't miss for anyone interested in US or medical history. Guided tours last approximately one-hour and can be scheduled Monday through Friday at 10am or 1pm by calling 215-829-3370.

I had the unfortunate experience of going to the ER at 8th and Spruce. I went there because I had had surgery 5 days prior at HUP and my surgeon's colleague was there. I told him I was on my way there. I was in such agony when I arrived that I was walking up and down moaning and crying in the waiting room and was told I had to wait for the triage nurse, of which there was 1. I wanted them to contact the doctor I had spoken to and they told me he wouldn't come until I went thru triage, was examined by a nurse and then the ER doctor on duty. Then they would call him.
The catheterization the triage nurse said I needed was never ordered. Finally and nurse came to do it and inserted it wrongly 2 time s then finally got it right...painfully. They refused to call the specialist and for some reason, I could not get thru to him.
As I complained to friends, they all said that they had heard the ER there was awful. I will NEVER go to this ER again. The doctors at the hospital are wonderful and most of mine are there, but I wouldn't trust the ER
unless you only have a cold and can afford to wait half the day.
The catheterization the triage nurse said I needed was never ordered. Finally and nurse came to do it and inserted it wrongly 2 time s then finally got it right...painfully. They refused to call the specialist and for some reason, I could not get thru to him.

I waited for over 2 hours before I was seen, while I waited in pain! Very disappointed with tge University of Pennsylvania on 34th and Spruce😣

Made my appointment at a prior visit, was able to check it on line any time. As well as that on line services where customized for my health care. The Dr.'s where available 24/7 and always responded promptly. Th follow-up appointments where on time and they spent all the time to answer all of my concerns. The very best in health care!

Our daughter's pre-Xmas delivery of her first child was an great experience at Pennsylvania Hospital at Spruce and 8th. All the staff was knowledgeable, available, patient and supportive. Our daughter and her husband were very grateful for the care.
