Monument to Haitian Troops who Fought During the Revolutionary War

Located next to City Market and the First African Baptist Church. Not as attractive as the other nearby city squares but dominated by the impressive monument to the Haitian troops who fought for the American Colonies during the Revolutionary War

Nice square

The town has a bunch of squares. They are all pretty nice. This one has a cool statue. They are relaxing. It’s great that nobody out houses there. This one has a lot of charm. Very nice.

Next To City Market

Designed in 1790 and named after Ben, Franklin Square is located next to City Market. The square was destroyed in 1935 for a rerouting of U.S. 17, but was restored in the mid 1980's. It is one of the smaller of the squares but has a nice tree canopy and landscaping as well as a small fountain. There is also an impressive monument honoring the Haitian troops that fought to defend Savannah during the Revolutionary war. This was one of a few squares where we did see a homeless person, but never felt threatened in this busy area.

Stay away from Franklin

There were many, what appeared to be, homeless people hanging out in Franklin. An altercation was about to start and we couldn't get away fast enough. We were afraid bullets were going to start flying!

Walked by, took a photo and continued on

I passed by Franklin Square during my visit to Savannah in June 2021. The centerpiece of the square is the Haitian Monument. Other than taking a photo, I did not linger at the square because there were a few homeless interspersed with tourists and I did not feel comfortable. The square is worth a quick walk by to take a photo of the Haitian Monument and then to move on to the pedestrian strip which has the City Market, the American Prohibition Museum and some other places.

Waking around

Visited Ships of the Sea Museum in Savannah and The City Market. Franklin Square located in the heart of The City Market in walking distance to Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, H Johnny Mercer Statue and The Prohibition Museum. lots of things to do and enjoy in and around the Square. The center piece of the Square is the Revolutionary War monument dedicated to the Haitian Soldiers who Fought to free Savannah from British Control. Great statue and an even better story that many don't know about.

Rude service, go elsewhere

Impatient, rude and noticeably unfriendly service when ordering coffee and breakfast this morning from both individuals working. We’ve visited Savannah many times and I’ve never had a bad experience such as this. Skip this “trendy” place, walk 30 seconds down the street and go to Savannah Coffee Roasters - it’s better in every way than this place.

Small and Lovely

It's one of the smaller squares and a bit away from the downtown action. It is lovely and a good place to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Haitian Monument

Franklin Square is the site of the Haitian Monument, troops who defended Savannah against the British in the American Revolution. It's an interesting story, in the Battle of Savannah, these elite troops entered when things were looking bad, and ensured the victory for the Americans.
It's a beautiful sculpture, interesting to photograph from different angles.
